A main source for downtime in customer environments occurred when image registries went down. The traditional way to solve this problem is to set up a stateful mirror, however...

Folks, hold up the cross (copyleft licenses) to ward off the demons (big tech).

Got no clue what you are trying to say

@[email protected] thank you for creating a social media platform that is resistant to be being ultimately compromised

I think my ISP hinders accessing Chinese websites in general. They take very long to load.

ML driven translation existed well before ChatGPT did like Google Translate and DeepL

How does translation fit this definition?

Its a conglomerate of imperialist lapdogs

Generative AI is colloquially used to refer to AI which you prompt in natural language to produce some stuff for you. If you prompt some AI to make music or protein sequences for you then that is generative AI too. It is a loose term and not something that AI scholars agree upon but it is not meaningless.

Luigi Mangione has allegedly entered the chat

I wonder to what extent different peoples conflate AI with generative AI. China has been using AI at important places long before the gen AI craze began. Meanwhile thanks to our media giving free PR to tech companies I wonder how many people think Sam Altman invented AI.

We did it Patrick! We saved the taxpayer money!

I don't wanna get too deep into the weeds of the AI debate because I frankly have a knee jerk dislike for AI but from what I can skim from hog groomer's take I agree with their sentiment. A lot of the anti-AI sentiment is based on longing for an idyllic utopia where a cottage industry of creatives exist protected from technological advancements. I think this is an understandable reaction to big tech trying to cause mass unemployment and climate catastrophe for a dollar while bringing down the average level of creative work. But stuff like this prevents sincerely considering if and how AI can be used as tooling by honest creatives to make their work easier or faster or better. This kind of nuance as of now has no place in the mainstream because the mainstream has been poisoned by a multi-billion dollar flood of marketing material from big tech consisting mostly of lies and deception.

Protection racket

Looks like she dealt with the backlash gracefully enough.

I have a similar feeling about Andor season 2. Season 1 was the best TV I have ever watched so there is no possibility other than going downhill from there.

But I don't want to get more efficient I want Project Stargate

Now that I reread about reading your comment I see it. Thanks.

What does he mean? Are people screwing in the screws? Or is it automated?

Supreme Court finds Tamil Nadu Governor’s conduct on 10 re-passed Bills was ‘unconstitutional’, puts Governors on the clock

Supreme Court criticizes Tamil Nadu Governor for delaying crucial bills, sets time limits for future actions, emphasizing Constitutional obligations.

Liberal multi-party democracy moment.
In India, the state legislature creates bills which are then sent to the state's governor for assent. The governor has three options from here:
- Send the bill back to the house with recommendations (can do this only once)
- Forward the bill to the president for consideration.
- Give assent to the bill.
The governor is not to be confused with the chief minister of a state who is directly elected in state-wide elections.
The twist is that the governor to a state is appointed by the central government. Tamil Nadu is ruled by a regional party called DMK which has enmity with BJP. So the BJP-appointed governor just sits on the bills indefinitely rendering the state legislature essentially useless.
In this ruling the Supreme Course rendered the actions of the governor void and approved the bills.
This happens in every state which does not have a ruling BJP majority or coalition including Kerala. Since India is a functioning democracy it took ten

Had a few days off so binged the first two seasons of the show. It is really fun. Has got me itching to play Mass Effect 2.

Can someone pill me on cold brew coffee?
I don't understand what the point of it is or how to consume it.
I have read instructions on how to make it. I can make it as well though of course I am no expert.
- I just don't know why someone would have it over normally brewed coffee. Is the taste different? I am not the kind of person who can tell difference easily.
- Let's say you have cold brewed a pot overnight. What do you do with it? Can you heat it before drinking it? Or do you have to drink it cold?
Thanks.

Sir, a second Chinese AI company has hit the OpenAI bubble
Two models from Baidu. One functionally equivalent to Deepseek R1 and the other to GPT-4.5. Both are cheaper than the models I am comparing them to but I don't know if this is because of Innovation or propped by Baidu's piles of cash.

How are fold phones these days? Good? Or they a gimmick?

What is going on with Safe Superintelligence?
The "good guy" from OpenAI, the Ash Ketchum to Sam Altman's Gary Oak, left OpenAI (a while back) to create a new lab/company called Safe Superintelligence. Here is a recent WSJ article about them: https://archive.is/mooDM
This is from their mission statement:
Superintelligence is within reach.
Building safe superintelligence (SSI) is the most important technical problem of our time.
We have started the world’s first straight-shot SSI lab, with one goal and one product: a safe superintelligence.
Some factoids about them:
- They have raised $2 billion.
- Have about 20 employees.
Candidates who secure an in-person interview are instructed to leave their phone in a Faraday cage, a container that blocks cellular and Wi-Fi signals, before entering SSI’s offices, one of the knowledgeable people said.
SSI operates as secretly as it can out of offices in Silicon Valley and Tel Aviv.
[Employees] are discouraged from mentioning SSI on their LinkedIn profiles

Copilot key
I got handed down a new laptop. I didn't need it but it is considerably smaller than my current laptop so it's nice that I can lug it around. Will see how it goes for a few weeks and if I don't get the chance to use it I will give it to someone else or sell it.
It has a Copilot key to the right of the space bar. This key is completely useless on Linux as is which is an upgrade considering pressing it doesn't bring up any copilot bullshit. But it takes the place of an actually useful key like a right control or right meta(/mod/super) key.
I thought remapping it would be straightforward. But turns out the keyboard is wired at firmware level to send out a bizarre combo of left shift + left meta + f23
. Who the hell comes up with this shit?
A solution I found was to use something called keyd to remap this particular combination to control. For now it's working fine but this is peak "modern problems require modern solutions" nonsense. The things we do to maximise shareholder value.

Kendrick Selling Out, And Who's Buying | indi.ca
The piece says in the end that it doesn't want to single out Kendrick Lamar but whenever he is mentioned in a revolutionary context the photographs of him with Dronebama flash before my eyes.
He says white people don't have singers and comedians as their leaders. I think there is a kernel of truth to that. But the current crop of trailblazers for whiteness includes people like Joe Rogan and a bunch of other podcasters. I cannot think of any example in this genre of demagogues that is not heavily invested in podcasting. They are not comedians nor singers. They are not even fit to be called clowns. But they are at least deeply unserious. I don't know how that fits in with his argument but it is something to think about.

I've been trying to quit drinking recently
For the past year or so I have been incredibly stressed and I have/had no outlet other than drinking. I have/had been drinking most of the days of the week.
As those who have dabbled in such abuse of alcohol already know, getting wasted as a reprieve is temporary and you feel somewhat good only for a fraction of the time you are drunk. Then you feel like crap when you crash and most likely a good part of the next day. So not is alcohol not the solution to the problem, it exacerbates it. And there is the damage to health that comes with it.
I have tried quitting multiple times over the period but have given in every time so far. The only logical thing to do is try again. So I have been trying again. This past week I have only had two beers. I did this without flying off the handle which is a good thing. I have started working out again. This time I am taking it a bit easy so that I don't burn out. Over the course of heavy drinking I had not been exercising at all. It's probably me bei

Ah shit folks. Some devious trickster hoodwinked the good Democrats into believing the economy was doing well when, in fact, it was doing shit.

I don’t believe those who went into this past election taking pride in the unemployment numbers understood that the near-record low unemployment figures — the figure was a mere 4.2 percent in November — counted homeless people doing occasional work as “employed.” But the implications are powerful. If you filter the statistic to include as unemployed people who can’t find anything but part-time work or who make a poverty wage (roughly $25,000), the percentage is actually 23.7 percent. In other words, nearly one of every four workers is functionally unemployed in America today — hardly something to celebrate.
Any fucking questions

Narendra Modi’s ruling Hindu nationalist party, BJP, wins crucial Delhi state elections

BJP won most seats in territory that includes the capital for first time in more than 25 years, ousting AA party

Delhi NCR (National Capital Region) regional government was until now help by Aam Admi Party (Common People's Party). They were kinda like a startup political party that shot up in popularity out of nowhere. They ran on an "anti-corruption" platform and while in power instated lukewarm welfare services. Their leader, Arvind Kejriwal, held the Chief Minister's office from 2013 until now.
Last year, BJP started engaging AAP in political warfare. AAP ended up being embroiled in a corruption scandal and Kejriwal was put under arrest.
Not sure what this means in the long term. It is hard to tell what goes on in whatever in the brain of a Delhiite if it can be called that. It is kind of a rebound for BJP since this last national election where they were not able to steamroll which was a considered a disappointing showing for them.

Days before Narendra Modi's visit to the USA, they deport 104 undocumented presumed Indian immigrants on a military cargo plane flight in which women were shackled, children were restrained with ropes

MEA briefs on PM Modi's upcoming visits to U.S. and France, addressing deportation concerns and emphasizing India-U.S. partnership.

This is gonna make licking DJT's boot a little bittersweet for Modi because the opposition parties are gonna call them spineless.

I don't have use for a tool like this anymore but at one point I did. Postman is the big fish in this game but it requires an account (a real head scratcher that one) on top being sluggish so I started looking for alternatives. I ended up on Insomnia. It was alright.
But it looks like this particular genre of software is predisposed to turning into SaaS garbage. Insomnia started requiring an account recently. A tool called Bruno posed itself as an alternative and now it has announced a pricing structure so it is not far fetched it will become garbage too.
I found this alternative. The codebase seems mature and the author says they are not going to paywall it. Strangely I never found this software when I was looking for it.
