  • I think sometimes it’s USB, but that looks like too many pins for USB

  • Not having read the article, I assume it has to do with Russia firing a bunch of cheap junk that’s not very precise but can still be deadly and costs a lot less than most of the defenses used to destroy them, and can be sent in such large quantities that the defenses can’t get them all.

  • I’ve always thought it dumb that the nation’s most populous state only uses seven of the possible eight characters on a license plate. Most states only use seven, but a dash separating letters and numbers means there is actually room for eight characters and many states will allow you to use all eight for vanity plates.

  • Can’t watch the video right now; does this one get the frequencies right? Unlike the one in California that Tom Scott featured in a video?

  • I’m glad to see them doing what they should’ve done all along, but doing what they should’ve been doing also doesn’t merit praise.

  • Where I feel like they have a suitable place is for vacation rentals. Like when I was a kid our family would rent a house at the beach for a week as our summer vacation. The beach we’d go to had several real estate companies that would manage the rentals and published little booklets every year with the listings. The houses were privately owned, though, so as Airbnb and especially VRBO came along this gave the homeowners another option that was perhaps less expensive than the agencies. These are houses in a vacation area, though, generally not taking away housing from locals. This also was traditionally a family that owned one extra house for family getaways and trying to rent it out when they weren’t using it, not investors creating “hotel” chains. Setting up what is effectively a hotel in a residential area and cutting off housing from people who need it should be an obvious problem yet many people don’t recognize it.

  • Shoegaze is a genre I haven’t really listened to but have thought I might like. I do like Explosions in the Sky and I think they’re at least adjacent? Any starting bands you recommend?

  • I still have a Facebook account. I mostly just check once a day to look at my Memories. I had already largely stopped using it because they stopped showing me things from my friends or pages I follow. Typically it would be one post at the top of the feed from someone or something I follow, then a bunch of “suggested” content, not what I want to see. I made my account in February 2005, back when you had to be a college student at a university Facebook supported to get an account. Over the years I had several hundred friends, although I got more selective as I got older and weeded out people on my list and added a lot fewer of the people I met. All that to say, I don’t think there was a lack of content available to show me, they just don’t want to show me what my friends and family are doing.

One of my goals for this year is to set up my own Friendica instance for myself and maybe a few close family members. I’d like to try to figure out a way to take a Facebook data export and import it into Friendica. It looks like there’s no direct way, but maybe an indirect way by importing the Facebook data to WordPress, then importing the WordPress data to Friendica.

  • Ford has 3, the F-150 Lightning and the unfortunately named Mustang Mach-E, and the E-Transit van I think is primarily for commercial customers.

  • On the more affordable end around here I see a lot of electric cars from Ford, Chevrolet, Kia, and Hyundai around here, and to a lesser extent Volkswagen. On the high end it’s mostly Mercedes-Benz and BMW, sometimes Porsche. Once in a while I’ll see Rivian but they don’t have a dealership in our state. Even more rarely I’ll see Polestar, which does have a dealership in a city at the other end of the state, and at least one person here has a Lucid Air.

Edit: also on the high end, there’s at least one Hummer EV driving around here.

  • For those of you unfamiliar with the flag and seal of the state of Virginia, here’s the Wikipedia page, including the image.

  • Literally today my wife tried calling me while I was at the store, just by clicking the phone button in the text message thread, but the call went to someone completely different, a woman in a noisy environment. The call showed in her log as the correct number so I assume it’s a glitch from the phone company.

  • Interesting read, thanks for posting

  • I’m going to need to save this link. I saved a Power Mac G5 from an old job that was being disposed, but it’s just been gathering dust in a corner. The reporters said it wasn’t working anymore, or at least wouldn’t run long enough to edit their stories, so it might need some work.

  • Reading aloud I’d usually still say “not applicable”

  • Looks like mostly a touch interface still

  • My wife will sometimes say she’s setting a “mental alarm” when she’d like to get up at a certain time but it’s not actually critical to be awake then and she tends to wake up right around then. There are plenty of times she wakes up one minute before her real alarm, too.

    Trade-In Xbox?

I have an Xbox One X. Tonight I noticed a banner on the main screen saying I could get up to $150 trading in my console for an Xbox Series X. I scanned the QR code for the trade-in calculator and it told me my promotional value was actually $100, not $150. There hasn’t been a lot on the Series S/X that interests me that I can’t play on my One X other than Flight Simulator. I do also use it as my media player for that TV, so the one advantage it has is if I subscribed to YouTube TV’s 4K package I could watch it on that TV (the One X is not listed as supported but can apparently show some, though not all, YouTube TV 4K content). I don’t even actually play that much so I’m not sure it’s worth spending the money, but I am curious about doing the upgrade. It looks like all my games should still play and my controllers still work? I don’t have anything that uses the Kinect and don’t have a Kinect, so no worries there. So if I did

TIL The Hayes Barton neighborhood in Raleigh is named after Sir Walter Raleigh's birthplace

Hayes Barton is an older, prominent neighborhood in Raleigh, North Carolina, the state capital. It has many large houses, lots of old money families, and I had always assumed it was named for a prominent older family or families, perhaps the owners of the land before it became a neighborhood. Today, though, I learned that it was named for the house where Sir Walter Raleigh was born, Sir Walter Raleigh of course being the city’s namesake. The house still stands today but is a private residence, not open for tours. I read that Sir Walter wanted to buy the house but Queen Elizabeth I would not let him, wanting to keep him in London close to her.

I had two BlackBerry devices for work, right about the time they were going away. I'd heard the keyboard was good on earlier models but it seemed like the quality had gotten pretty cheap on the later phones. The BlackBerry 10 OS on my last phone was actually pretty good, and probably would've kept them in the market if they'd launched it 5 years earlier.

Reaction to the ’Canes Blockbuster Trade

A collection of reactions to the Hurricanes blockbuster trade as posted by the team on official social media. To recap, the ’Canes are getting star right winger Mikko Rantanen from the Colorado Avalanche and left winger Taylor Hall from the Chicago Blackhawks as well as the rights to Chicago prospect Nils Juntorp. Chicago will also cover half of Rantanen’s remaining contract, which expires at the end of the season. Chicago will get their third-round draft pick back from Carolina, which Carolina had received in a previous trade. Colorado gets the Hurricanes’ leading scorer Martin Necas and center Jack Drury along with the Canes’ second-round draft pick this year and fourth-round pick next year.

Rantanen might not just be a rental; he’s reported to want a similar contract as Leon Draisaitl at around $14 million/year for 8 years while Colorado wanted to keep it closer to $10 million. Hurricanes GM Eric Tulsky today said the team has the financial flexibility to provide the desired contra

The best “I told you so”s are the ones where you never have to say “I told you so” because the other person clearly knows you told them so

Not actually a shower thought; this occurred while waiting in line to cross the border from Canada back to the US. In fact, I had a double “I told you so” for my wife in that line, and she clearly knew it. The past 3 years we’ve visited my wife’s parents over the holidays but I’ve always said I want to get back across the border before New Year’s Day in part because traffic would be better, but this year with the dates she convinced me and insisted we never have to wait at Champlain so it would be fine. As we approached the border and message signs announced waits exceeding an hour I had my first one. Then as we were waiting in line I noticed there was basically no line for the NEXUS lane, which I’ve been pushing for years but she felt we didn’t need because the application sounded complicated and “we never have to wait” at border crossings.

Interview with Signal President Meredith Whittaker

[We] have now fully turned in terms of public sentiment toward Big Tech. People have to use it because you can’t participate in society without it, but that’s not winning users. That’s coercion. We’re talking about lock-in, where other options have been foreclosed by state abandonment or monopoly. The demand for an alternative has never been stronger.

    I hate the new kickoffs!

I’ve been trying to give it a chance, but watching Monday Night Football tonight kind of sealed it for me: I hate the new kickoff rules! The regular kickoff is dumb, the onside kick is dumb, the free kick after a safety is dumb. The whole thing is dumb and I want it to go away. I’m sure it won’t go away this season, but I really wish it would. I don’t think it’s enough to make me stop watching, but I think it’s exceptionally stupid.

I didn’t even care about the results of tonight’s games; I was just watching to have them on and the only thing that really is sticking with me is how dumb the kickoffs are now.

The couple took over a decade to actually join the club, with annual dues of $31,500, but spending closer to $125,000 a year to visit the Anaheim parks. They were expelled from the club five years later when park security guards found the husband intoxicated in the park, a violation of club rules. The couple has since spent $400,000 suing to regain access to the club and ‘clear his reputation,’ claiming he was not drunk but suffering from a “vestibular migraine” which looks a lot like being drunk and can be triggered by red wine. They claim they were targeted for retaliation because they complained about a different club member harassing other club members and staff.

    The couple plan to appeal.

What’s the craziest thing you’ve seen someone driving do?

My kid’s just finished the classroom part of driver education and it prompted a discussion of crazy things we’ve seen other drivers do.

The craziest thing I saw, many years ago now, was I came up behind a guy driving a Ford Ranger pickup and could see through his rear window that he was doing tricep extensions with a dumbbell in his right hand. I was more surprised as I passed to see he was shaving with an electric razor in his left hand. I don’t really know how he was steering.

Kiddo said they were told personal grooming was the fourth leading cause of accidents.

Are you using GOG games on your Steam Deck?

A couple games popped up on my Steam wishlist at really low prices so I was thinking of getting them, but I’ve also had a few older computers recently that are losing Steam client support. This got me thinking I should really try to compare and get more games on GOG so it doesn’t matter if a client stops working on older hardware. But also following this community has had me thinking a Steam Deck makes a lot of sense for me, so maybe I’ll try to get one in the next year or two. It seems like Steam tries to keep things open to other sources on the device, but have you been playing non-Steam games, and how much hassle has it been?

Also the games I was considering are Donut County and Planet Coaster, if you have any thoughts on those.
