  • Rabbit and chocolate are not even remotely biblical either. Church adopted that shit to appease pagan converts ages ago.

  • I don't think so. As far as I know the primary constraint is the number of seats. That is an artificial constraint from the top to maintain exclusivity and brand value. In the trickle down effects of such a constraint those managing the school are incentivised to get the most money for each of those seats as this is largely what is funding their pay and research, like the kinds of lab equipment available. We are in the age when lots of equipment exists beyond the scope of what any school can afford, such as EUV for edge node silicon fab tech. How the school prepares elite students to lead in a field where the school cannot provide direct and relevant training is a bit dicey and is the basis for a lot of financial pressure. Overall, removing this elite class of funding will inevitably reduce the relevance of the institution because it will need to do more with less while filling the same number of seats via supply and demand adjusted prices.

  • I don't like the method, execution, or reasons, but I feel torn as this type of move will force these institutions to restructure for servicing the youth of the USA instead of primarily pricing out the nation in favor of the super wealthy elite from abroad. From that angle, this eventually creates slightly more upward mobility access for social classes that have long been de facto bared from these institutions due to financial competitiveness of a foreign elite. Maybe that perspective is naΓ―ve. I comment it to engage with other reasoning people, not dogma or the stupidity of tribalism.

  • Just a bit of advice: maybe use the Jehovah's Witnesses playbook of never act alone like some kind of prime directive. Seriously, this is effective and why you never see Witnesses knocking on people's doors or slinging literature solo. This applies both if approached or if you see someone being approached. The key is not to gang up on the other person. It only takes 2 people and should only be 2 people to avoid making the other person uncomfortable. The second person is there to mostly support and occasionally act like a moderator. The second person can pull back the conversation, tone down, or redirect in ways that the first is less in control of in the flow of conversation.

Witnesses encounter a lot of confrontational people. When I was one, I was chased, threatened, followed, and a number of other things. Witnesses are directed to always be friendly and amicable while walking away from all confrontational people.

  • This is so stupid. I have my AI server up right now in another tab and setup for creative writing. I currently have these tokens banned: 3221, 265, 28845, 382, 650, 28716, 16913, 1101

Those tokens correspond to specific word fragments and punctuation. Most are due to some sentence starting patterns I don't like. I can ban any tokens and the model will not use them. All models have this functionality in the API for any user that actually knows what they are doing at a basic elementary level. Like the tokens for - – β€” are 28773, 764, and 1040, for my mixtral model.

  • I do this all the time too. The new standard for polite calling anyone is to initiate the conversation if the line goes live as far as I am concerned. Never say anything for an unknown caller, and expect to get dropped or hung up on even if you are legitimate. If you're unwilling to call me twice or thrice, you didn't need to call me in the first place.

  • I was not expecting to see so much Caesar

  • Yeah, like Oh no! doG hates your fundamental human needs as scientifically defined. You're supposed to bottle and depress yourself on par with the most sadistic misers in the group!

  • Actually look at the way Discord works in your network, like all the raw IP addresses and and connections with no clear ownership or human readable name, with dozens of changing connections to get any of it to work. Then go try to ask questions about what is going on and who you're connecting to. Discover that none of it is documented or described anywhere. Then realize that this means no one running Discord is doing so on a fully audited and logged host. You simply cannot be without a bunch of effort. I made it to the 6th layer of whitelisted raw IP addresses, and still nothing worked while trying to connect to Discord in a fully logged and documented network. I am simply unwilling to write a script to annotate that many connections so that all of my logs make sense. I seriously doubt anyone on Discord is doing so, and they certainly lack any understanding of what they are connecting to, why, or the protocols. So the Discord user is telling me "my opsec and privacy awareness is as nonexistent as a pig in a herd running off a cliff, and my system should be assumed compromised with no idea of what might be connected." Everyone else doing it is a garbage excuse. That no one appears to have gotten hurt – has tissue thin merit, but also reveals that the user runs blind in herds while hoping for the best. Such information infers a lot about a person, their depth, accountability, and ethics – in certain scopes.

If I know the frequency and magnitude of a high pitched continuous sound, how can I calculate the potential effects of damping materials?

I have a small hard drive that is making a constant high pitched sound that is typical of the drive, and not very noticeable to the average person, but I have pain induced noise sensitivity. I am curious about how to calculate damping potential. As an initial guestimate, the frequency is very near to my maximum audible range and likely around 12kHz-16kHz. It is a little higher than the switch mode power supplies that I can also hear if it is dead silent in the room, although the drive is a higher amplitude. Addressing the noise with a solution is probably beyond the scope of anything I would actually do, but knowing how to solve it is far more interesting to me. (ELI15 )

What is the deal with LVDS and monitor displays?

Is it super standardised, like where all 30 or 40 pin LVDS connections are the same, as in pin and voltage compatible?

Are there hardware peripherals in a microcontroller that just drive LVDS like how UART, SPI, CAN, etc. work? Or is it a messy complicated thing with display specific power supply voltages, and unique power management requirements, baud rates and such?

I can find lots of old style monitor to HDMI or VGA conversions for an old laptop screen based on display model number. But what I am looking for is a USB-C/USB-3 to LVDS converter board small enough to fit into an old apple laptop top shell and act as a second monitor with all power and functionality controlled through the USB interface. I have the fab skills. If there is a simple chip that does USB-C PD/display to LVDS, I'll toss it in KiCAD and etch it myself if I can get the chip. In my past experience with small displays for hobby microcontrollers, they were anything but standard in most cases. I have never messed

The gptel package with Oobaboga Textgen Webui works well in Doom emacs

It is not in the list of combinations. Most of the LLM packages seem to lack an easy way to run a llama.cpp server with the load split between CPU and GPU. Like Ollama appears to only load a model simply with the whole thing in the GPU. The simplification pushes users into smaller models that are far less capable. If the model is split between the CPU and GPU one can run a much larger quantized model in GGUF format that runs nearly as fast as the smaller less capable model loaded into the GPU only. Then you do not need to resort to using cloud hosted or proprietary models.

The Oobabooga front end also gives a nice interface for model loading and softmax settings.

gptel is at: https://github.com/karthink/gptel or MELPA
