Researchers say problem could increase number of people at risk of starvation by 400m in next two decades

Yup! Those things are easy (comparatively) to recycle because they're single material items, so the process is:
"Plastic" is thought of as a single material, but even vegetable packaging will be made of around 5-10 different polymers, so for it to be valuable, you need to break it down back to those original polymers.
It's not a issue with recycling as a whole, its specific to plastic as a material.
That's awesome!
As a UK person working in battery energy I often take a look at the awesome https://grid.iamkate.com/ in a sunny and windy day to see how high renewables go. It's not uncommon for.them to jump past 90% in the right conditions.
Thanks! That wikipedia article is a great rabbit hole into anti facist history in general!
This is probably a dumb question, but what's the three arrows in a circle icon in the bottom right?
I know it as "upside down pitchfork media logo" but I'm guessing it's actually more meaningful than that?
as a country that we simply don’t give a damn about making the changes that the rest of the world want us to
This bits interesting. Obama pushed hard for Asia's involvement in climate commitments, and Biden made policy decisions based on attempting to reduce climate impact.
There's definitely a sizable amount of American's who do care great about climate change, obviously though that doesn't include the current government.
What's your reasoning for thinking its not gardening? The article goes into some detail to explain that a fair amount of gardening skill is involved and its a lot more than just letting your lawn grow wild.
Assuming you're not just trolling peopke who care about the environment, I have an actual evidence based answer here, current levels of biomass in the ocean aren't really known, and are difficult to estimate[0]. They're very widely regarded as dropping heavily as a result of human interference and climate change.
I think you might be misreading the comic though, which I think is more an explanation a shifting baseline, where the first panel is compared to the second, rather than the first which would be the correct reference point for a natural population[1].
It's almost certainly not meant to be representative of the actual species, aside from anything else the size ratio between say, pufferfish, turtles and whales are obviously wrong, but again, I don't think the comic is trying to pretend it's accurate in that respect.

That's sad to hear- people on the internet can seem harsh, I thinks its probably too easy to forget there's a real person behind most questions.
It's been like a month now, and I still don't really think LLMs are solarpunk, trying oto make them more.open and community based sounds worthwhile though, so good luck with it!
Massive side point, but if you're interested on "empowering people who don't want to deal with technical details of coding" check out ideas as a whole around "end user programming". It's a pretty broad church, but there's some cool stuff happening under that term that it sounds like you'd like.
Yeah, I don't understand (amongst many other things) why distinguish between 3,500% and 3,521%? What insane sum was used it generate that figure?
Also, at this point a part that costs $10 is now $362.10. Is there any point using tariffs here rather than just making them illegal?
My tip would be, give one of them a go for a set time period, like a month!
It's so interesting how the brain gets used to stuff, I did have the same thing when I swapped, but now cow milk tastes kind of funky when I do have it. You might find that after a week or so, you end up preferring it (you might also find you hate it, but at least you can say you gave it a go when you swap back, haha!)
I've had pea milk, doesn't seem too rare in the UK. It was nice enough, maybe slightly watery compared to oat (my go to) but that could just have been the brand.
The comparisions are interesting, but also kind of demonstrate the futility of debating between plant based milks. There's a clear worst candidate here, and it isn't plant based. If your thinking of switching, choose your favourite, soy might be the second worst but it's significantly less than half the emmisions of cow milk.
Surely you'll trolling? You must get that people are here to talk about some politicial commentary, and you're saying "well, I'm not convinced in the concept of duty". It's like turning up to an astrinomy club and saying "you can't prove these stars aren't a dream of mine!".
If you're genuinely interested, then there's a bumch of philosophy under the category "meta-ethics". Would massively recommend J L Mackie's "Ethics: Inventing Right and Wrong".
Are you taking specific fault with the idea of "duty" or do you genuinely just not think that moral obligations are real?
Either way, "why should we be motivated to act ethically" is a pretty mammoth question for a PHD thesis to answer, let alone a comment on lemmy.
I think it seems fair, that even if you don't accept ethical obligations to each other exist, then it's at least a widespread enough and accepted notion, that it's hardly controversial to include it in the article as assumed.
I'm not gonna try to convince you otherwise because I think our world views are too different for that to be worthwhile l, but I do want to understand, when you say "are the problem", what in your mind is the problem?
Is it that you think they're taking up state resources, what resources do you think they're using vs work that they do?
Is it because you have an idea if what the make up in America should be in terms of languages, birthplace or race?
Not trying to debate you, genuinely interested to understand why you feel like that.
I've heard people say this, and it kind of sounds right. But just thinking of examples, stuff like:
Are all big wins that happened from improving on flawed systems.
Meanwhile, places that have had revolutions overthrowing the government (Egypt, Lybia, Russia, China) all seem to have gained very little in terms of resistance ideas, and mainly just wound up with a new authoritarian in charge.
Maybe I'm subconsciously picking select examples though? If definitely seems like this to all the ones I can think of.
I don't think that's a fair reading of the article, the three points it mentions are:
Then it has a whole bit about how these policies could save money.
Either way, I'm not reading this as suggesting expensive rebuilds.
Tbf, all these headlines miss that indexes like the S&P 500 are still far down from pre-tariff-mania. Investors are more or less updating their views for how screwed the markets are, rather than betting that everything is fine.
Joke aside, giving homeless people isn't actually illegal right? That'd be almost as insane as half the stuff the US has inacted lately.
Edit: oh wow, that is disgunstingly inhumane and I have no idea how someone can support policy that bans charity and still sleep at night.
Yup, this 100%!
If anyones in doubt, I was pretty horrified to learn meat reared chickens are sometimes slaughtered as early as 35 days old.

This is a genuinely interesting article about global politics, but I sorta get the impression there's this underlying "Does Europe pick US or China as a trade partner?" question at the heart of it.
Seems like this pulls into very 1 dimensional view, and surely the answer is just, Europe should be sceptical of China and USA's motives, trade wherever it's beneficial, and push for the things it values (positive take would be workers rights, renewable energy etc).
Trump is trying push a whole pick sides narative on the world, that seems pretty ignorant to actual reality, and just ends up with everyone more fractured and weak.

The pollution of the planet by microplastics is significantly cutting food supplies by damaging the ability of plants to photosynthesise, according to a new assessment.
A global treaty on plastics, touted as the most important environmental treaty since the Paris Agreement, will be negotiated in South Korea.
Repairable Bike Tips
I'm looking to purchase a bike (probably second hand) and I want to make sure that it'll be easily repairable in the future for at least standard maintenance stuff.
Thing is, I don't know anything about bikes- I've heard people say off hand that modern bikes might perform better but are less maintanable, is this a thing? What qualities/features in a bike tell me that it'll be easier to maintain in the long run?

Hy (a lisp built on top of Python similar to how Clojure is built on top of Java) released v1 recently. I couldn't resist playing with it and found it worked sooo nicely. Thanks all the maintainers for creating a great language!

Solarpunk media recomendations?
Hey folks, appologies if this has been asked before (although surprisingly I couldn't find a similar post) - what solarpunk book, film, game, tv, etc recommendations does every have?
I'm only just discovering the genre, looking for some good starting points!
