  • I had them in a warming tent with a reflective surface in the beginning, but then they got too big for it, and with the repotting, they won't fit at all, so that's a good idea.

    Pepper Seedlings coming along slowly

They're a bit more leggy than I think is healthy, but hopefully repotting them will help.

  • Passing out in public. I've done it 3 times, none of them because I was drunk, and let me tell you, that embarrassment lasts a lifetime. It hasn't happened in like 25 years, but if I feel even slightly off, I'll excuse myself and go find a quiet corner, because I would rather die there alone than be remembered as that person who fainted in public.

  • I never played Oblivion, only Skyrim, which I loved. Is it worth buying the remastered edition, or is it gonna be so similar to Skyrim that it's not worth the money?

  • Legit though this was real. He would 100% say something this ridiculous.

  • I'm grateful that they finally paved the shitty road that I frequently take! It was so full of potholes and filled potholes that then broke open and made bigger potholes. I've seen better-paved roads in 3rd-world countries. Now it is glorious!

  • She's right. Cooked raisins are an abomination. You're a hero.

  • Maruchan chicken flavor Ramen (it's carby and full of sodium, I'm sorry).

  • Volunteer at various non-profits. I am (sadly) one of those people that "need" to work in some capacity in order to fill fulfilled. I also need structure, which I'm not very good at building for myself. I need to be held accountable (such as being expected to show up to work at a certain time), and work has always helped me do that.

I'm about to leave my current job with no back-up plan, and while my savings and partner will provide for me for the rest of the year, I'm kinda dreading not having structure. I'll probably volunteer somewhere.

  • This is interesting to me because in the moment after accomplishing something, I feel great about it. It's only after time has passed that I look back at that accomplishment and my collective accomplishments throughout life and think to myself "omg, I haven't done anything, I'm such a loser", when I have in fact done plenty of things. I have no idea where that thought process comes from. I am not afraid to succeed; I have had to work hard for some, but not all, of my accomplishments. Maybe it's a "comparing myself to others" thing?

  • Following, because I'm gonna be unemployed soon and am also in my 40s and trying to figure out a new path to work from home. There's several YouTube channels dedicated to talking about work from home jobs (not all tech-related), but I don't know how reliable/truthful they are. Lots of customer service roles (not my cup to tea, personally).

  • Back when my brother still lived with my mom, he, a full-grown adult, had a set of four square whiskey stones made of metal that he kept in the back of the freezer that he would add to a glass of whiskey every now and then. One night my mom texts me a picture of the whiskey stones while he's not in the house with "I FOUND THESE IN THE FREEZER!" "ARE THESE DRUGS???" "WHAT IS THIS??" Like holy fuck, are you serious? Yeah, sure, they're drugs, Mom. Cubed metal is all the rage on the streets these days. You just swallow them whole and get high as fuck.

  • I got a personal trainer at a small local gym to do strength training. I meet with them twice a week and then go by myself a third day during the week; all three days I go before work. Pros are that I'm much stronger than I was 2 years ago, cons are that it does cost money and I do have to get up earlier to be there, but it's pretty easy to get up early when you paid someone for their time to meet you there.

  • Hell yes, I already several songs from the show on my regular playlists.

  • Lactose intolerance finally pays off

  • Permanently Deleted

  • Dusting around the house. I don't mind doing any other house-related chore except that. I feel like I can never TRULY get the dust off of everything/out of every little nook and cranny.

But I also hate cutting my toenails, so I get you there. I find feet disgusting, even my own (and yes, they are clean and I take care of them). I won't even touch my partner's feet or let them touch mine. Feet are just weird looking and give me the ick.

Name a group, band, artist, or track you're really into right now

I'm about to take a long flight and am looking to expand my music library.

EDIT: Thanks so much, everyone! I've got 10.5 hours of music on my new playlist thanks to you all!

  • Calling yourself "Alpha". If you have to say it out loud, you are definitely not the Alpha.

  • For real. Every time my partner and I go on a walk and some jackass roars by I sarcastically yell "Oh my God, I'm so wet now!"

What's something that's free that everyone should know about?

I'll start by plugging Harvard's free courses catalog as well as Udemy

Edit: Gonna add 2 more I remembered-

Blender - I wish I had more time to learn it, but I did start the infamous "Donut Tutorial" once!

Watch Cartoons Online - Lots of good older stuff!

Tableau or Power BI (or both)?

I'm about to be unemployed, and I'm looking to get some certificates for either Tableau or Power BI to make myself more marketable to prospective employers. I use Tableau in my current workplace and consider myself a "Beginner". I'm not great at it, but not horrible either (I can more make things look pretty than write extensive calculated fields).

I've never used Power BI, but based on a bit of research, it seems like it's more commonly used in companies that are not already focused on data analytics. I've watched a few videos on Power BI, but never used the app myself. It definitely looks more user-friendly than Tableau, though.

Can anyone offer any insight as to which app would be more marketable to have a certificate in when looking for entry-level jobs? Thanks you!

Will COVID death rates of Republicans have a significant impact on the outcome of the presidential election?

A study was conducted that revealed that once a COVID vaccine was available, Republicans were more likely to die than Democrats:

Republicans' excess death rate spiked after COVID-19 vaccines arrived, a study says

Excess Death Rates for Republicans and Democrats During the COVID-19 Pandemic

"This study constructs an individual-level dataset with political affiliation and excess death rates during the COVID-19 pandemic via a linkage of 2017 voter registration in Ohio and Florida to mortality data from 2018 to 2021. We estimate substantially higher excess death rates for registered Republicans when compared to registered Democrats, with almost all of the difference concentrated in the period after vaccines were widely available in our study states. Overall, the excess death rate for Republicans was 5.4 percentage points (pp), or 76%, higher than the excess dea

If Trump loses the election and flees to another country to avoid his sentencing in his (multiple) lawsuits, does the Secret Service have to go with him?

Former U.S. presidents are authorized a security detail from the Secret Service for life. If Trump loses the election and flees the country, does his security detail have to go with him if he requests it?

I imagine this could go down in a variety of ways: He departs the U.S. before he's sentenced and just never returns, or he attempts to flees or does flees the U.S. after his sentencing. Either way, what happens to his security detail?

If he attempts to flees after he's sentenced, I would hope the detail would refuse to take part in it (if he can even board a plane/leave the country to begin with), but given all their failings, who knows.

Name a Superhero you just can't stand

For some reason I've just never liked Spider-Man. He comes off as a whiney, ignorant child that never seems to grow up or mature despite everything he goes through. I love a good coming of age story, but he just never seems to become an adult.

What's a recipe that you will NEVER make again?

Have you ever tried a recipe that turned out to go horribly wrong, or maybe the end product, despite being good, just wasn't worth the effort? What was that recipe, and what about it made you say "NEVER AGAIN"?

I ask this as I am actively trying to remove the stench of onions from my Instapot lid's silicone ring after making French Onion Soup in it (so far steaming it with white vinegar on the steam setting, soaking the ring in a water/baking soda bath overnight, and baking it at 250 degrees F for 20 minutes have all done nothing, so I ordered a new one, I give up). And I realized that cutting all the onions and waiting hours for them to caramelize and now this damn smell issue just isn't worth it. Plus I still have frozen soup in the freezer because I can only eat French Onion soup so many days in a row.

    NEVER AGAIN.

If money was not an issue, would you move to an entirely different state or country?

If yes, where would you move to?

    If no, why not?

I ask this as someone who has moved around a lot (5 states) for better working opportunities. I often hear people say they wish they could leave their current city/state/country, but money is often (understandably) an issue.

    Coffee @lemmy.world
    grasshopper_mouse @lemmy.world

Add a little spice to your coffee

I use this blend of spices more during the winter months, but it's tasty in any season:

    HAWAIJ (SWEET YEMENI SPICE BLEND)

    Ingredients

2 Tbsp dried ginger (or 2 large dried pieces of ginger)

2 Tbsp cardamom seeds (removed from pods) (or 2 Tbsp ground cardamom)

    ¼ tsp ground nutmeg

¼ tsp ground mace (or 2-3 pieces mace)

12 whole cloves (or ½ tsp ground cloves)

1 whole cinnamon stick (or 1 Tbsp ground cinnamon)

Instructions Grind all spices together in a spice grinder. Store in a cool, dark place for up to 12 months.

What makes a great sci-fi story?

I'm curious what users feel makes a great sci-fi story. What elements do you feel "make or break" the story specifically where sci-fi is concerned? For me, I really enjoyed the Expanse series, as it feels like there's a sort of "believability" to it all. The authors make everything seem very realistic, even if some of the descriptions and physics are made up.

What is it about your favorite sci-fi books and shows that make them your favorites?

    Nestle Alternatives

Hello, and a big FUCK YOU to Nestle!

I wanted to start a thread where we could share any Nestle-alternative products we have come across! I will get the ball rolling with what I have found over the years:

KitKat- KitKats used to be my very favorite candy, so I was bummed when I learned they are made by Nestle. This is now my go-to alternative: https://norwegianfoodstore.com/products/kvikk-lunsj-chocolate-3-x-47-gram

Kiehl's skincare products- I used to use Kiehl's Ultra Facial Cream, but now use e.l.f Holy Hydration face cream, which has the same ingredients and costs much less per ounce https://www.elfcosmetics.com/elf-skin

Starbucks ground/whole bean coffee- Some of the bags you buy in the supermarket are made by Nestle (you have to check the back and sides of the bag to be sure). I stopped buying Starbucks and started buying bags of whole bean from
