  • It's the Luddites vs the looms

I always thought using the term Luddite as an insult completely missed the point 😉

Future generations train on the creations of the past

I think that's a nuanced difference, or at least, I see it that way. Artists are inspired and influenced by what came before them, but they are also awarded both rights to and responsibility for what they create. If an artist plagiarises someone else's work, they can be held accountable.

Gen AI muddies that. An artist using a gen AI model has no knowledge of what that model was trained on. The organisation that provides the model does, but they are at a remove from any process that results in an output, and the major AI platforms are openly hostile to being held accountable for the output of their models. What about the model itself? if we accept it's using a creative process to produce output, should it be afforded rights and responsibilities to what it produces? that opens up a whole ethical debate too.

  • Simple answer is yes.

However, Lenovo have full legal and financial control over Motorola. But because Motorola is a subsidiary, it's legally distinct from its parent company. And because it's incorporated in the USA it has to be compliant with US law. So, for example, Lenovo is not permitted to compel Motorola to violate US law.

  • I also feel the use of artists' creative works in the training data for the major models is unethical. I doubt all those artists consented to their work being used that way.

  • Oh yeah, to be clear I was just clarifying the structure. I don't consider American companies to be any more trustworthy than companies based elsewhere.

  • Motorola Mobility is American, and a subsidiary of Lenovo who are Chinese.

should there be a formal policy on generative AI in this community?

  • From some quick research just now, all these species are female-only and reproduce asexually:

It's nowhere near as common as sexual reproduction, but it doesn't mean it's an evolutionary dead-end.

those that don't reproduce sexually have gone extinct

Plenty of sexually-reproducing species have gone extinct too: that's not an argument that sexual reproduction is unfavourable.

  • The rate of evolution in an asexually reproducing species will always be significantly slower than a species that reproduces sexually, and over time it will be out-competed

Again: not necessarily. That there are still asexually-producing organisms suggests that it's not enough of a disadvantage for the environment they're in.

This form of reproduction can also be an advantage: the rate of reproduction tends to be faster and more offspring are produced. In the case of this organism, instead of one queen producing all the offspring, every ant is able to produce offspring.

tl;dr: it isn't the case that sexual reproduction is always favoured over asexual reproduction. Evolutionary pressure isn't fixed like that.

  • Not necessarily: mutations will still happen. But there will not be any genetic crossing over that will contribute to greater variance.

  • I haven't DJed in decades and I still feel this to my core.

My local goth club has resolved this by rotating DJ sets of different styles every 45 minutes. Everyone gets a dance, and the bar and toilets are never too busy.

  • God I hate Wonderful Christmastime. It's the laziest, most cynical cash-in on a Christmas song. It goes nowhere. Aaargh.

    Front 242 - Headhunter

  • Yep, one of my fixations is tweaking anything to be marginally more efficient (for a very narrow, personal definition of "efficient" 😉).

  • I love how uncomfortable this band makes me feel.

  • Love your avatar btw

  • This is very much a sample size of 1 finding, but for me the biggest intervention was being put on broad-spectrum antibiotics to deal with an infection after some unrelated surgery. I was fully expecting the antibiotics to make things worse, but it did the opposite. It turns out there is a thing called SIBO (small intestine bacterial overgrowth) and it's likely I had that.

Over six years later and I've only had the rare IBS flare-up once or twice, and they don't last as long as they used to. It's been a huge improvement to my pain levels and quality of life.

    Ask your doctor about SIBO.

  • Yay Converter are back

  • Full disclosure: the graphics on the video look like they're created by generative AI. I don't think the music is.

  • I guess, get an environment prepped for flashing stock firmware back on it ready, and then next time the screen is working focus on getting that done? I don't really see any other way of doing it, you're going to need to interact with the screen in some way to get the bootloader unlocked (if it's locked) and get it into fastboot mode.

  • Ah okay, understood. Is the screen consistently broken, or does it work occasionally?

  • I'm not sure if Amazon returns policy varies by region, but I have returned faulty electronic devices that have been reformatted/had firmware updated and Amazon returns have never checked it. I suspect it just gets thrown onto a recycle pile. It's cheaper for them to send a new one than it is for them to pay someone to do some basic diagnosis.
