Zum Leben auf dem Mars braucht es neben Wasser, Essen auch Sauerstoff. Dieser muss irgendwie produziert werden.
Die Elektrolyse aus Wasser ist leider nicht optimal, weil Wasser am Mars ein rares Gut ist, das man nicht verschwenden will, würde ich sagen. Also liegt es nahe, dass man die Atemluft "recycelt" und von Pflanzen aufbereiten lässt, um eine konstant hohe Sauerstoffkonzentration aufrechtzuerhalten.
Diese Pflanzen könnte man unterirdisch (mit LEDs) züchten, damit sie dort Sauerstoff benötigen, wo er gebraucht wird. Ich weiß, dass das erst mal befremdlich ist, aber ich halte es für einen bemerkens-werten Ansatz.
