  • I'm honestly mixed on that front. On the one hand, yes, effort is almost always required to become powerful in these stories: you're not just handed an S-class ability all juiced up from the get-go, you have to earn it. But on the other hand, in most of these stories there's also a LOT of luck and innate ability that also factors into the protagonist's success that isn't really acknowledged. It's dangerous to imply to youth that effort = success, because it leads to a few erroneous assumptions, such as: successful people must have worked hard to get to where they are and people who aren't successful must not have tried hard enough, effort is always rewarded eventually, pushing yourself past your limits is something to be praised not avoided, sheer willpower can overcome any handicap, etc. It's a recipe for future disappointment and burnout (or even permanent disability), which seems extra dangerous in cultures that already abuse students and workers with unrealistic expectations for overexertion.

  • I would add to this list, buildings and units that encourage resident diversity. As in, a diversity of ages, household size, economic class (and ideally also race/ethnicity/country of origin). Organically this means a mix of "luxury" and "budget" housing, unit sizes (studio through three bedroom at minimum), building ages and designs, target demographics for shops (e.g. upscale shopping alongside budget grocers), and community amenities (e.g. schools and senior centers). In a pinch subsidized housing can help with integration, but it's a limited and costly solution.

  • That's still better than the Japanese/Korean version: "I'm powerful because I don't know to look both ways before crossing the street." (Or for the c/fuckcars crowd, "I'm powerful because society still hasn't fixed its motor vehicle violence problem.")

  • Yes but no but.

On a busy day when I only have a limited time to browse and I don't want to get trapped in the infinite "just one more page bro" cycle? Yeah Lemmy is good for that. But if I need something to pass the time for more than an hour or so (transit layover, extremely delayed appointment, sick day at home, etc) Lemmy has neither the constant influx of new content nor the archive of old content to allow for hours of distracting rabbit holes to explore.

  • Again, depending on where in the world you are, you may not have the equipment nor access to ingredients necessary to make these properly. You might be able to approximate, but it won't be as good, which is the entire point of my comment.

American pizza requires a pizza oven or regular oven with a steel/stone (or dish for Detroit-style pizza), specific types of cheese, and depending on your preference, specific toppings; these may not be available abroad. In some countries, ovens are not considered standard kitchen equipment; good luck making decent pizza on the stovetop.

Similarly, really good BBQ requires special equipment that even most American homes don't have, and requires a good deal of outdoor space (otherwise you risk smoking out yourself/your neighbors).

Mexican food is more flexible in terms of equipment, but ingredients may be hard to source (especially spices).

For ice cream you might struggle to find the right add-in ingredients depending on what flavor you're trying to make, but again, the biggest issue is equipment. You can make ice cream at home without an ice cream maker, but it seems like more hassle than it's worth and still requires some equipment and decent freezer space (fwiw I've never done it before; maybe it's easier than it sounds).

  • Obviously this is entirely dependent on where you're moving to, but I struggled to find the following when living abroad:

    • good (American-style) pizza
    • good Mexican food
    • good BBQ
    • certain ice cream flavors (like cherries jubilee/cherry garcia)
    • wide open spaces completely devoid of people
    • large-group events of a boisterous and goofy nature
    • certain types of museums/educational facilities (such as good zoos/wildlife rehab open to the public and interactive science museums)

Reddit censorship in action: two screenshots of the top of r/all on my phone, taken just minutes apart (12:34 and 12:40 PST) -- spot the difference!

Screenshots of reddit.com/r/all on mobile as it appeared immediately after loading (did not scroll), taken at 12:34 and 12:40 PST; look what suddenly disappeared from the #1 post spot! That's a rather specific "server error"...

I happened to take the first screenshot (12:34) because I thought it was suspicious enough that they were suddenly dealing with an unspecified "error" right as bad news about the site hit the top of r/all. Then a few minutes later (~12:38) the site didn't load at all. A few minutes after that, the bad press post is gone from r/all. If you go to the post now (https://www.reddit.com/r/politics/comments/1jl6smd/elon_musk_pressured_reddits_ceo_on_content/), it says "Sorry, this post has been removed by the moderators of r/politics" (marked as "off-topic").

  • So, uh, if this is what men need at the end of the day, what does this guy think women need at the end of their day? Or is it only men "fighting battles" in their day-to-day lives? Because this surely implies that either men are needlessly making things harder for themselves if women somehow manage to avoid daily battles, or that women don't need comfort after their daily battles... and wouldn't that make men, who do need that help, the weaker sex?

  • There's also a severe shortage of medical professionals ever since covid in all fields all over the country (but especially in rural and rapidly-growing areas). Good luck actually getting a medical appointment, and even if you can swing one standards have been weakened so that what would normally be a visit with a doctor (or the field's equivalent) is now a nurse practitioner or other less-educated title. If you want a "real" medical professional you need a referral, and again, good luck getting that appointment scheduled. Everyone working in medicine is overworked and burned out. Unless you're actively bleeding out, seeking medical attention, especially routine checkups and preventative screening, doesn't feel worth it anymore.

I'm not too surprised to see cancer deaths being one rare area that's decreasing; besides strides in treatment, most cancer sufferers are older and thus wealthier and also have Medicare, plus they also probably already have a primary care physician from pre-shortage. The hardest-hit in the medical care shortage are the young and people who have recently moved, and find themselves running into the wall of "no one is taking new patients."

    Random case of vaporwave

I love seeing random instances of vaporwave influence. I stumbled across this example in the sci-fi/fantasy webcomic series Ava's Demon. It's only for two panels and has nothing to do with the plot at all, but I thought it was a neat cameo.

    Synthwave/vaporwave in pop music

I was listening to the radio the other day and did an audio double-take as I could swear I heard vaporwave coming from my speakers. Turns out it was the intro to Espresso by Sabrina Carpenter, one of the hottest songs of the summer. Another popular song that seems like it might have some subtle vaporwave influences is Saturn by SZA.

What do you think, is this just a coincidence or has the niche phenomenon of vaporwave influenced pop music? What mainstream songs give you synthwave/vaporwave vibes?

    Lupine seed formation follow-up

There was a conversation about lupine seed collection in the comment section of a post a little while back, and now that my lupine is going to seed I thought I'd follow up on what that looks like.

From left to right, we have immature seed pods (still green, still developing), maturing seed pods (brown, with black seeds inside), pods just about to pop (you can see them starting to split open with the round black seeds poking through), old pods most of which have popped open and dispelled their seeds, and finally a branch with all four stages present (generally seed pods develop from the bottom up, however this can be affected by variables like sun exposure).

The seed pods are apparently heat-activated; we've been getting a major heat wave here in the Pacific Northwest and the pods have been exploding open like crazy during midday when the sun hits them and the ambient temperature is at its peak. The seeds are propelled out when the pods burst open, and I've witnessed them fly well ov

Review: Train to the End of the World

Title: Train to the End of the World (English); 終末トレインどこへいく?(Japanese)

    Type: Anime

    Year: 2024

    Country: Japan

    Genre: Surreal

    Status: Completed

    Platform: Crunchyroll (watch here)

Appropriate for 30+?: No, but I (mostly) enjoyed it anyway

    My rating: 3.5/5 stars

    (Rating scale: 5/5 = masterpiece, 4/5 = quite good, 3/5 = mostly good, 2/5 = bleh, 1/5 = I regret ever being exposed to this series, 0/5 = affront to humanity)

Train to the End of the World (TEW) is perhaps one of the worst "cute girls doing cute things" series I've ever watched, and yet it's probably the series I've enjoyed the most this year so far.

Much like Girls' Last Tour, this is an entry into the "cute girls doing cute things, but in a dystopian setting" sub-s

    Let us count the "waves"...

One of my favorite aspects of "wave music" is that it's spun off so many various sub-genres and niche aesthetics. We've got:

    Synthwave, Chillwave, Vaporwave, Retrowave, Darkwave

as some of the main players, but what else is out there? What other "waves" have you come across?

    Listen to This: Droid Bishop

Droid Bishop (real name: James Bowen) is a one-man synthwave artist who's put out multiple banger albums over the last decade-ish. Each album feels like the soundtrack to an introspective 80s drama/action film. Beyond the Blue is probably my favorite road-trip album of all time; it makes driving through the empty expanses of I-80 through Wyoming feel like a grand, meaningful adventure.

As far as I can tell he doesn't have an official YouTube presence, but this channel seems to have all his works: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCYb8MJseDAimJBFCJQ8Hfvg

    Listen to This: INEXED

INEXED is one of my favorite channels for background music. If I wanted to introduce someone to synthwave, this might be where I direct them.

Videos are consistently high-quality, and the compilations are long (1hr to 2hr+) without repetition. There's perhaps not a lot of variety in vibe: some videos label themselves and vaporwave, chillwave, retrowave, etc, but I'd consider those to be more the flavor of synthwave being featured than actual examples of those genres. Most compilations are calming but energetic, with a bit of a surreal touch.

It's frustrating that INEXED only has about 37k subscribers when the quality is so much better than a lot of other synthwave/chillwave channels out there. Please check them out!

    Listen to This: NewRetroWave

    NewRetroWave is the GOAT.

They've posted over 3000 retrowave and synthwave songs and albums since 2011, and more keep coming. With over a million subscribers, they're one of the biggest players in the YouTube synthwave scene, and for good reason: in an era of low-effort compilations repeating the same tired tracks over and over, NewRetroWave somehow keeps finding quality fresh material for us listeners. Most of their posts are single songs (3-6 minutes), but there's a few longer (hour-ish) compilations mixed in.

This feels less like a YouTube channel and more like a library. Definitely check it out!

    Listen to This: dreamingr0b0ts

Dreamingr0b0ts is a fantastic house/trance YouTube channel with a mere 123 subscribers. (It may not technically be synthwave, but it's synthwave-adjacent)

Some of the very oldest videos are a bit rough around the edges, but they quickly improve in quality. I like this channel because it has more of an old-school vibe than most synthwave; it reminds me a lot of early-2000s electronica, back in the days of Armin van Buuren. Vocals are present more often than not, and the vibe is more "dance" than "chillax." Great music to stay awake during a long road trip, or to stay motivated during a big house clean-up. A lot of synthwave videos rehash the same songs over and over, but as far as I can tell these are quite fresh.

Check out their "The Daily Dose" series, each of which are albums of about 20 minutes each.

Let's share recommendations for the easiest native plants to grow from seed!

Inspired by a comment reply I made in another thread, I thought it would be fun to share what plants native to your region you've had easy success with growing from seed, either in pots or direct-sowing. Please mention your country/region when commenting!

Want to grow a native pollinator garden but are uncertain where to begin? The Xerces Society has you covered!

Disclaimer: data only available for the lower 48 United States, although Southern Canada and Northern Mexico should be able to extrapolate

The Xerces Society is an insect conservation nonprofit organization based in Portland, Oregon. They engage in a variety of work to protect native insects, including publishing resources for the general public.

One such resource are their Native Plants for Pollinators and Beneficial Insects guides, which are curated illustrated lists of plants broken down by geographic region. The lists include basic growing conditions info for each species, as well as some info on how the plants benefit insects. They even have separate lists specifically for supporting the endangered monarch butterfly.

If you're a native plant fanatic like me you can cross-reference their lists with the USDA Plants Database (I wrote about that other great resource in [this post

If you live in the United States, you should know about the USDA Plants Database!

Identifying what plants are actually native to your area can be surprisingly tricky. A lot of info out there is state- (or even less helpfully, region-) specific, but if you live in a large and/or geographically diverse state what's native in one corner may be completely foreign in another. There's also a lot of information out there that's too vague or straight-up incorrect, especially for any plant with numerous common names or multiple sub-species.

Enter the USDA Plants Database! While far from perfect, it is hands-down the best tool I have encountered for verifying what plants are native to an area of the US down to the county level.

I often use the database to cross-reference plant guides and recommendations, such as relating to pollinator-friendly gardening. For instance, you would be really surprised how often plants that are not actually native to your area will slip into "native" seed mixes! On the flip side there are also lots of plants t

Warning: One Room of Happiness contains difficult subject matter such as suicide, abuse, and rape. Many of the characters are or have been victims of abuse, and as such this series has multiple scenes and chapters that can only be described as "emotionally unpleasant." However the series also has many "warm and fuzzy" moments, and while there is tension that things could suddenly go horribly wrong

    Transplant timing question

I've frequently read that a good rule of thumb for many vegetables is that plant starts are ready for transplanting into the ground once they've "developed their second set of true leaves." However I'm unclear as to whether this means "once the second set of true leaves begin to emerge" or "once the second set of true leaves have grown to full size" or something in between.

I usually let the weather dictate when I plant out, but this spring has been mild enough that I've found myself with a huge window of opportunity. When do you all know your starts are ready to go in the ground?
