Orion Drift, Gorilla Tag's Next Game, Opens Early Access Next Tuesday
Orion Drift, the Echo-inspired new game from the studio behind Gorilla Tag, just launched in early access on Quest.
Orion Drift will open early access next Tuesday, February 25.
Orion Drift is the next game from Another Axiom, the studio behind Gorilla Tag, one of VR gaming's biggest hits of all time. It's a zero-gravity sci-fi sports game reminiscent of Echo VR, which Meta shut down last year.
Ready At Dawn was working on one of the "most revolutionary VR games ever" when Meta shut it, the studio's co-founder claims.
Seven months after the shutdown, Ready At Dawn co-founder Andrea Pessino gave a two hour interview with MinnMax about the studio's history, including its time under Meta.

I‘m using voyager, but according to the dev it’s not a client issue:
Yes, its lemmy api. Here's an example with vger.social where it is working. I can confirm it is not working for lemmy.world. Could be because lemmy.world is using an outdated lemmy version, or some network config for that instance.
Disney is taking cues from another Netflix move.
Presumably, the company is making this change to stop Apple from taking a cut of new subscription revenues for Disney Plus and Hulu. However, if you already subscribe to those services through Apple, Disney says you’ll still be billed through Apple.
“We’re aware of reports that access to Signal has been blocked in some countries,” Signal says. If you are affected by the blocks, the company recommends turning on its censorship circumvention feature. (NetBlocks reports that this feature lets Signal “remain usable” in Russia.)

Thanks :) pe1uca summed it up pretty nicely. I‘d add that you can get all your channelIds (which you need for the rss feeds) by exporting your YouTube subscriptions via google takeaway. You can take a look at what the rss feed gives you, it’s as pe1uca said the 15 most recent videos and sadly not all the info: duration e.g. is missing.
I’ve been on basically that exact same journey. I made a little iOS app that uses rss feeds and the iframe player to play videos: Unwatched for YouTube (just released it two weeks ago). It’s also open source, if you have any specific questions let me know.
Splitwise Balance Widget
Has to run in the app once for the setup, the timer shows how long it’s been since the last refresh.
It only uses scriptable, no shortcuts, but I guess that’s close enough.

I agree. Similar to all the anti-competitive lawsuits Apple has to deal with regarding the App Store because they’re clinging to every last dollar they can squeeze out of it, their iMessage approach seems to be going a similar way.
I’m sure tons of people are buying iPhones because of iMessage, but it looks like that might be slowly eroding away. In the end, they’ll have lost both their relevance in the messaging area and a strong reason for people to buy iPhones. They should’ve just made an Android app for iMessage.
WhatsApp this week reached a significant milestone of 100 million monthly active users in the United States, a market traditionally dominated by...
The achievement, announced in an official blog post, indicates a potential shift in the American messaging landscape, where WhatsApp has steadily gained ground despite the longstanding popularity of Apple's iMessage. The Meta-owned messaging app is extremely popular in Europe owing to its cross-platform compatibility.
Apple Intelligence to Miss Initial Launch of Upcoming iOS 18 Overhaul
Apple Inc.’s upcoming artificial intelligence features will arrive later than anticipated, missing the initial launch of its upcoming iPhone and iPad software overhauls but giving the company more time to fix bugs.
NEW: Apple Intelligence will arrive later than anticipated, coming in iOS 18.1 and iPadOS 18.1 in October and missing the initial September releases. Still, 18.1 will go into beta for developers this week. https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2024-07-28/apple-intelligence-to-miss-initial-release-of-upcoming-ios-18-ipados-overhauls?embedded-checkout=true

Feels like there’s more and more podcasts going on YouTube and some have chapters only there, not in their actual podcast feeds. I made a tiny iOS App that works similar to Castro, only for YouTube videos.
It's free and open source. I'm happy to get any feedback or to hear from people who find it as useful as I do.
You can get it here: https://apps.apple.com/app/id6477287463
Features
It’s not perfect and definitely not a full podcast player replacement, but it could be useful as an add on in some cases. At the very least people who enjoy Castro might find it useful to have something similar for YouTube videos.
Unwatched for YouTube is now available on the App Store

I‘m not extremely experienced, so any kind of feedback (especially code related) is very welcome :)
There’s definitely tons of issues surrounding LLMs: how they’re created, what they spit out, and the impact they have. But there’s also use cases that go beyond grammar check imo, but everyone can figure that out for themselves.
I‘ve mostly given up on complaining about "AI" as a description, that’s just what we’re calling it now even though it never made any sense.
Think of it what you will, compared to crypto there’s actually value that people are getting from LLMs. Even with its current shortcomings.

Mark Gurman claims Apple is "considering" making the non-Pro Vision headset "reliant on a tethered Mac or iPhone". But this doesn't make sense.
In Mark Gurman's latest report he claims Apple is "considering" making the upcoming non-Pro Vision headset "reliant on a tethered Mac or iPhone". […] But at closer inspection, there are a number of reasons this probably couldn't work, and it's simply a bad idea even if it could. […]
The real issue is that devices without a cooling fan like smartphones cannot sustain their peak performance for more than a few dozen minutes at the absolute most. […]
Even if this problem could be magically solved by some future cooling system, an iPhone's battery is three times smaller than the battery attached to Apple Vision Pro, which weighs almost twice as much as an iPhone.
In an ideal world, Apple intelligence will take care of this. But it’ll probably just highlight more important notifications while everything else is still there a swipe away.
Force them (including myself) to implement dark mode, and soon dark app icons.
Apple Vision Pro apparently sets its fan speed based on how much noise the microphones hear.
With Apple Vision Pro however, temperature doesn't seem to be the only factor in fan speeds. According to Max Thomas (aka Shiny Quagsire), the main developer of the visionOS port of the SteamVR streaming tool ALVR, the headset also sets the maximum fan speed based on how loud the fans are, measured with the headset's microphone array.
The idea is presumably that in louder environments, those with more ambient noise, the fans will be harder to hear. So the overall goal of ensuring you rarely hear any fans can be maintained while maximizing performance.
This all leads to the bizarre conclusion that Apple Vision Pro should perform better in noisy environments […].
If I remember correctly they’ve since removed that rule
Apple today said that European customers will not get access to the Apple Intelligence, iPhone Mirroring, and SharePlay Screen Sharing features that...
Due to the regulatory uncertainties brought about by the Digital Markets Act, we do not believe that we will be able to roll out three of these new] features -- iPhone Mirroring, SharePlay Screen Sharing enhancements, and Apple Intelligence -- to our EU users this year.
Am I misremembering or did they say you could use it in the dark? I thought it was using infrared to light up your hands and track itself.
Vision Pro Owners: Would you buy it again? What should a 2. gen look like?
Are you using the VP enough to still justify the price tag?
What upgrades/changes would a 2. gen need for you to consider getting it?
Hiking ≠ walking
They had walking directions probably from the start, but there’s new topographical map now.
Are you talking about asking Siri about bedtime stories? Because that has been a thing for a while. Apple said that AI stuff was coming later this summer with a waitlist, so none of the new stuff should be there yet.
It’s not yet available, even in beta, right?
There’s no need for that Shortcut anymore, there’s a dedicated shortcut action from Apple now (Shortcut example)
I’ve been a long time 1password user, but they turned away from individuals and towards b2b. And they’ve gotten a lot more expensive as well. I ultimately switched to iCloud Keychain and I’m quite happy with it. There’s still a few shortcomings, but they don’t matter as much anymore. I’m happy to see the upcoming changes.
A standalone password manager from Apple?

Apple has launched another round of steep discounts on iPhone 15 models in mainland China, in a bid to boost sales in its biggest smartphone market...
Apple is offering discounts of up to 2,300 yuan ($318) on select models. […] Apple has become dependent on discounts to shift mid-cycle iPhone 15 stock, with strong competition from Huawei's latest high-end series of Pura 70 phones said to be partly behind the most recent drop in sales.
What’s the difference between the pro and non-pro version?
I think they’re reworking the Chromecast sharing as it was never working great. An alternative is to use the phone to share the screen and put that on the TV if I remember correctly (or use a laptop or just the phone).
There’s also a few asymmetrical games, where one player plays in VR and the other one flat (there’s probably more):
Regarding isolation: that’s definitely true. But I’d argue most players (flat or VR) play games alone in a room anyways and VR multiplayer games have a bigger social component. But playing with friends and family is definitely more fun.
