In Berlin? I've got a good-as-new 1010 Blackbox for sale

Hey folks,

Thought I should post this here in case there are any Berlin people in need of a hyper compact sampler:

I don't want to ship it because I prefer to keep it local and meet the people I'm selling to. I never have any issues this way as we meet, chat, share phone numbers, and the buyer knows where I live and how to get in touch if there's any issue at all.

πŸ˜ŠπŸ‘

  • My label mate Nundale just got one and sounds extremely happy with it! I'll have to start saving.. πŸ˜‚

  • You can dip in with the essentials package for €80 though (perhaps even this is the type of thing they bundle with stuff so you might find a free licence key for it somewhere). They might also offer a crossgrade price if you contact them. I got a great crossgrade offer from Presonus when I decided to start using Studio One. I just had to prove my ownership of another DAW (I sent them a Reason 10 receipt I think).

  • Partially because the Hapax has more generative stuff, but also the more expansive layout looks like it'll be even faster to work with

  • It seems like snap is a bit of a disaster. I have a VM running Ubuntu for testing some things and ended up completely removing snap it was taking up so much space.

  • This week I've been focused on mixing my next EP. Will probably spend next week doing the same 😁

  • Welcome! Nice setup! I see you also have the incredible Pyramid Squarp 😊 I love it. In fact even considering upgrading to their newer sequencer.

  • I print and bind the manual for any hardware I buy. Whilst undoubtedly I can discover a lot of the functionality just from experience, there's usually some stuff that you discover from the manual that just isn't the sort of thing you find out by chance 😊

Never tried the MPC stuff though (beyond a day with the Force before it had disk streaming), so can't give any specific recommendations..

Intrusion - The Seduction of Silence

It's been around a while, but I'm sure it's going to be hailed as an absolute classic in the dub-techno genre, up there with milestones from Rhythm & Sound and Deepchord.

New live studio recording from William Fields

Performed live, no overdubs. I find his music fascinating. If I'm correct he's coded his own live performance system. One of those things I'd love to get a deeper look into!

    emt Records

I have a special place in my heart for this record label which existed in the 90s and then was briefly resurrected in the 00s.

This is an old DJ mix I did exclusively using tracks from the label, and if you're not familiar with this old ambient label, I highly recommend checking them out 😊

    The Necks - Open

Every once in a while I search around for things that give me a similar feeling and vibe as In a Silent Way by Miles Davis. Found this album suggested somewhere and it's a pretty good option for that sort of hypnotic 'ambient jazz'.

In a Silent Way is pretty unique out there as far as I can tell - it's the jazz album that makes me think the most of minimal electronic music with a focus on looping sections and very gradual changes.

    Anyway, hope you enjoy!

Clarice Jensen - For this from that will be filled

This album came up in conversation last night. I saw Clarice Jensen on tour after this was released and it was accompanied by a hauntingly beautiful set of visuals, but even without that, I think there are some moments of true beauty in here - although it's definitely an album that demands attentive listening, preferably with eyes closed 😊

You want to get into Autechre, where do you start?

This question was posted regularly on Reddit (no one every thinks to search for the answer first..) so I thought I'd create a pinned post with my own thoughts on it - but of course I'd love to hear other suggestions in the comments!

Autechre have a huge discography, so many hours of music, it can understandably be a bit daunting to know where to dip in.

My own personal feeling is that if you jump in with something very recent, depending on your tastes, you might find it difficult to understand or appreciate - and I've always felt that their new releases are informed by the entire evolution of their works over the past 30+ years.

So in my mind, if you've never heard any Autechre, start at the beginning, listen to each album and get to know it before you move on to the next one.

Here's a list of all their albums

But of course don't forget the EPs too - which have often come out after an album and

    Autech-who?

A pioneering and, for me, inspiring electronic music duo originally from England who've been releasing incredible music on Warp Records since the early 90s.

  • Guess we should go ahead and start an Autechre community here so 😁

  • Hehe, that was me 😁

Download codes for my first album

Here's a gift for your Bandcamp collection: codes for my first ever full album, Incomplete Watch Movement. It might be nearly 18 years old, but I'm still proud of it, and always surprised when I listen to it - knowing it was made using much simpler tools 😊 (made entirely in Reason 3)

    Self-hosted photoblog options

    Hey folks,

I used to be semi active as a photoblogger and am tempted to get back into the habit. I ran an old self-hosted WordPress for years but I've been hunting around for any more modern alternatives (perhaps more specifically focused on photoblogging) and am not coming up with anything concrete.

    Any recommendations?

I could be tempted into a third-party service option if it gave me a way to offer print sales on each photoblog post - but that would really just be a 'nice to have'

    Thanks!

    Maschine+ vs Akai Force

I've been spending quite a bit of time considering this. I'm looking for something that will allow me to ditch the laptop when playing live shows, but that is also useful in my hybrid hardware/software studio setup. Given that I work in my studio 99% of the time vs 1% of the time playing live shows, the ability of any tool to be an asset in the studio is naturally very important.

I actually bought a 1010music blackbox with the thought that this would be my bridge for computer-less live shows, but I just don't use it in the studio as I have other tools that are far more effective than it (I'll immediately reach for the digitakt instead of the Blackbox). I haven't even had a live show since I bought the Blackbox a year ago so it's basically been useless, and I'm suspecting that it might be fairly limited in a 'ableton live replacement' during a live show.

As far as live shows go, since I got into hardware my usual approach was using Ableton Live to play stems from released tracks, and

  • What about artist specific communities? My most visited subreddit was always the Autechre one. You happy to see that sort of thing pop up here too?
