  • I don't have a basement or an attic. My oldest sleeps in part of what once was a one car garage garage. It now is a laundry room and a small bedroom. There are many nights when the only place we don't have someone sleeping is the kitchen, the laundry room and the two bathrooms. I really could use an office space tho. I've been working from home more in 2025 than any other year and my PC is in the living room but there are often teenagers sleeping in there and I like to start working around 5am because my wife gets up for work at 4. I'm just waiting it out at this point, one of these kids will move out someday. Right?

    Right?

  • I enjoy coffee but I mostly quit caffeine a few years ago so I don't need my coffee. I do enjoy a quality water-processed decaf a couple of times a week. I like strong and black, no sweetener.

I've owned a few motorcycles and technically I still do but it isn't running and isn't a priority this year. I have other things I'm investing in. You can ride anywhere if you learn to ride super defensively and wear quality gear head to foot.I want to come home to my family every time. It's a ton of fun though and I like to go motocamping.

I like to hike mountains but I'm currently in the eastern US so I only make it to nice mountains about every other year. The Smokies have great challenging hikes but they're no fourteeners. I know that number doesn't make sense to metric people. I've hiked seven mountains over 14k feet, a few of them more than once. The tallest is Mount Whitney in California, the highest point in the contiguous 48 states. I'd like to travel to climb something taller. I'd like to also climb Mount Rainier even though it's a little shorter, just for the winter mountaineering. I already own snow shoes, crampons, Ice axe etc. I'm getting older so it's getting higher on my bucket list.

  • What solid women have we had as options? I have seen women on social media who were more electable than anyone who made it through either party's gauntlet. At this point I expect our first woman president will be a Republican.

  • I don't care about honking. I've seen two people on a bike near me in almost two decades and I've seen a dozen bikes staged on the roadside as memorials to people who have died. I'm not worried about honking, I'm worried about dying.

  • Oh, I expect you'll get the opportunity to fill out little bubbles on a piece of paper. The way they control people is through controlling information. The only way it usually fails is if people are starving or if some bad info leaks out. Keep em fat and happy and they keep voting. And pay attention to how the government treats whistleblowers.

In the rare case voters get mad about something and switch to vote for the other side, the elite still win. Oligarchs fund both parties.

  • In this thread, most of both the French and the vegans are insufferable. I like a nice strong black coffee and I don't eat a lot of meat, but there's a reason I don't really want to go back to Paris or to half of the vegan restaurants I try.

  • I have lived in Europe and I know that can be a viable option for many people. But there are many places in the US where there are no real alternatives to a car. I have lived in my house for 18 years, bought at the beginning of 2007 before the market bubble popped and haven't been able to afford to move since then. In 18 years I have seen exactly two people riding a bike near my home and I sometimes wonder if they're still alive.

Here's a weird one (PC repair)

My son has my family's oldest gaming PC, it's an i7 4790 with a 1660 TI and 16GB DDR3. It wasn't booting the last couple of days. I had time to look at it so we disconnected everything and threw it on the table with some good light and connected it to power so I could see what it was doing.

It was clear his three case fans were all dying, one was completely dead. One was in poor condition and one was starting to make noise. I already had extra case fans brand new in box sitting in my house, but I assumed old fans weren't what was keeping it from booting.

We removed all three bad fans, and with the case wide open, both sides front and top removed, I blew it out a little bit with canned air. It wasn't that dirty, just a little bit of dust came out. I checked with my fingers to see that the ram seemed seated and that all the connections seemed okay, but I didn't disconnect and reconnect anything, I just touched it.

I turned on the PC with no case fans (only an old CPU cooler connect
