  • For me “it’s complicated”. I live with passive suicidal ideation on a daily basis. Some days are better than others, but generally speaking I don’t want to actually kill myself. However, the idea of being dead does not bother me as it ought other people.

That being said, I do stick around especially for my two sons. I could not bring myself to not be a part of their lives; especially right now as they are 12 and 10. I don’t want to rob them of their father, and I do want to see them through to when they have a life of their own and have their own family (whatever that may look like for them).

As for meaning in life: ultimately everything we do is only for the living. When I die, my life only matters to the people whom I was closest (my kids). Beyond that, who cares right? I have no delusions that I’ll be remembered by anyone else.

But I do have other things I’d like to achieve: find another love of my life, travel the world more, complete as much of my bucket list as possible (e.g. skydiving, bungee jumping, scuba diving, etc).

  • Hollywood has done irreparable damage to society’s expectation of reality.

  • That is awesome!

  • I don't think it would materially affect pricing, it would just serve to increase profits of sellers.

Since when in our capitalist history has any corporation willfully given up any cut of profit for any reason? Of course they will pass this on to the customers, and the customers will gleefully eat it because their favorite merchandiser masters will it from them.

  • I’ve always been a “late bloomer”, and if there’s one thing I learned along the way is that there is no specific timetable for living life. It’s your life, and you do things how you want; fuck those Jones’.

Also, congrats! Being a dad has got to be the best thing ever (albeit frustrating at times 😂). You’re gonna love it!! Get yourself a copy of The Happiest Baby on the Block, and start practicing your swaddling. It’ll save both your sanity later.

  • Ironic considering Reddit did something similar when it first started out.

  • Is that a hotdog or are you just happy to see me? 🥹😍

  • Couple this with the (at least here in America) dismantling of public education and revisionist history, and our world’s future has never looked brighter; as in staring into the blast of a nuclear explosion brighter.

  • “ie” vs “ei” are my kryptonite. e.g. receive, sieve.

  • I haven’t always had this habit, but I brush my teeth twice a day and floss before bed.

  • Today is a beautiful (sunny/warm) day. But good is relative.

  • I am NSFW

  • Sorry to hear about your pug. Fuck cancer. I lost my 16-yo pit bull terrier to cancer a few years back.

That said, no need to get up in arms about this post. This is still a good thing. If you don’t like it, downvote and move on.

  • Don’t sperm banks offer selective sperm choices based on intelligence and physical fitness?

  • How is that a misrepresentation? You justified what I said.

    Recommendations for a Plug-n-Play / Walk-Away 3D-Printer

I have cut my teeth on the Ender 3 Pro v2 printer by Creality. Neat little printer; it works wonders when/if it’s perfectly dialed in. The thing is, I don’t have the interest to dial it in like it needs to be. I just want to turn it on, send it a print, and walk away. I do t want to spend all morning (like this morning) trying to “auto-level” 🙄 the bed, just to not have it be level.

When I try to manually level the bed it’s worse: I can measure one corner 5 times in a row, and get 5 wildly different heights each time. And I’m even using the Creality BL Touch sensor!

I have upgraded the springs, and I’m using the wide knob’s, and spent days trying to tune in my printer. I’m also using the Jyers Marlin firmware (15x15).

It’s exhausting and not fun. Help me Make Printing Fun Again. 😩

    Advice for Anxious/Scared Dog

    Hi Lemmings!

I have a 3.5 yo Pit Bull Terrier/Mini Pinscher mixed breed that is always anxious and scared of her own shadow.

For the past year she has lived with me in my new home, which unfortunately backs up to a landscaping supply company that operates machinery that makes a lot of noise during the day, and also is on a fairly busy road that sees a lot of traffic (and people with horrible muffler systems that would wake the dead).

When she first came to my new house she would have accidents, which is understandable. She eventually got comfortable enough with going out back to use the bathroom, and would let me know that she needed to go. In fact, if I do t respond within a minute of her sitting at the back door, she will bark so I notice her. I love it. I couldn’t be prouder.

But, during the day especially, when she goes outside she gets scared by the landscaping supplier noises, cars backfiring/diesel trucks, or neighboring dogs barking, and will immediately turn back to co

    Asteroid

Asteroid chronicles the journey of Spencer Coleman and his family from the “big city” to a house on the outskirts of his hometown. The film anticipates the fragmentations of emerging modernism and blends humor with social satire while highlighting a life based on procrastination and avoidance. And there's an Asteroid coming!

What’s the best way to fix these gaps?

Can this be done without replacing the ceiling? The house was built in 1980, so I’m not surprised that there is warpage, but I’d like to hide it if possible.

Any ideas what these signs on this building mean?

Aside of these signs and the address numbers, the building is completely unmarked.

Automod should not be a thing on Lemmy

It’s lazy. It has no place in quality communities. If you are a mod and feel so overwhelmed unable to keep up with the posts in your communities, then you need to please consider bringing on other quality mods and /or step down and let someone else do the job to help you.

    /rant

Edit: as was pointed out, my post was overly negative toward mods. I apologize. I should’ve waited before posting this so I didn’t come across as inflammatory.

    How do people do it?

Full disclosure: I had to quit my meds earlier this week because of side effects (tachycardia).

So I am raw dogging my emotions right now, and to put it simply: I am just so damned angry. I genuinely want to break everything around me; except… I can’t. I can’t do a goddamned thing because … responsibilities.

I feel so overwhelmed by everything, and I have absolutely no one to turn to; no one who will listen. I have no friends, and aside of my children, I have no family. My dog doesn’t even want to be around me when I’m sad or upset.

How the fuck do people do this?

Shoutout to the Blue Collar Side of Lemmy

I spent last night pulling fiberglass insulation from under my house, and this afternoon bagging it; I’d have bagged it last night but I damn near passed out from heat and being out of breath. In all, I bagged 10x 40 gallon bags.

Tomorrow I go and clean up mold. And some time after Monday (when the plumber fixes my leaky water heater), I will add vapor barrier and new insulation. 😅

That shit is/was no joke. I had a head-to-toe tyvek suit, nitrile gloves, safety glasses, and an n95 mask. I’m in love with the tyvek suit for future dirty jobs, but in all it was super hot and difficult to breathe. I couldn’t have done the job without them though.

Anyway, my point is that for those of you who do this day in and day out, you all rock! I have always appreciated those who do the dirty jobs, but now I revere you too.

Thank you for all that you do!

Spectrum’s Introductory Offer Led Me to Needing Mold Remediation

Yeah, the title is clickbaity. I did that on purpose.

Anyway, so I had a one year introductory offer with Spectrum for my Internet, and it expired this month. I like to save money, so I was going to research other service providers in my area, and found one that is offering 1gb fiber with some nifty discounts - in the end, I’ll be getting more than twice the speed for much less than Spectrum.

Fast forward to today, the installation date, and the service guy peeks his head through my back door (so not to track dirt into the house) and says, “you’ve got to see this.” I knew something was wrong. Before he showed me the problem, he said he was a volunteer firefighter and a vet, and not even he would work under my house.

At that point I knew exactly what the problem could be: mold. Apparently somewhere up the line from my water heater is a significant

Why can’t HVAC be made smarter?

Where I’m at, the temps flip-flop day to day, even hour to hour. In the morning it’s 35° outside, and by evening it’s 79°. I gave up keeping up with the temps and shut my unit off for the time being.

My question is why can’t HVAC units be programmed to say that if the outside temp reaches n° and the inside temp reaches m° cold, turn on the heat; conversely, if the outside temp rises to n° and the inside temp reaches m°, then turn on the AC?

My thermostat already knows the outside and inside temp, but I still have to manually switch it back and forth. I want a system that I can just set it and forget it all year round.

I just got back from DC (821 mile drive round trip) to show my support for our veterans.

There were a lot of great speakers with heartfelt messages for us to listen to and absorb. This was my first protest; hopefully not my last.

The organizers (Cliff Cash and Jessica Denson of Fourteenth Now!) did a great job putting this all together.

Thank you too all of our service members, past and present! Also thank you to everyone who showed up to support our service members!

Side note: As I mentioned, I’d never been to a protest before. I’m also a severe introvert who sucks at organizing himself, and I went alone. I almost backed down, especially when my youngest son said he was scared of me getting arrested. But it is for him and my other son that I went, because these things are super important!
