Oh hey 2112... You're actually the first person here to notice / comment on it!
Based on the nonsensical chest computer/armour and other garbled elements of the image I'm going to assume it's AI-generated.
It fits — Charlie is a punk rocker whose band opened for the Dead Kennedys.
Never thought of that, I may give it a shot!
Right-wing SW fans make more sense than right-wing Star Trek fans, at least. In SW they can root for the Empire, but ST is a post-scarcity utopia from the ground up.
You're counting his informal COVID response advice? That's stretching the truth to the breaking point.
when he was advising Trudeau
You mean since all the way back in the... fall of 2024?
lmao
No the (attempted) joke was using an obviously AI-written text hyping up protests, but it didn't really work.
If you’re a fan of the established order of capitalism Carney’s your guy for sure
Carney is a Keynesian and would probably prefer a 1950s or 60s style capitalism than what we have right now.
Political protests are incredibly important to me because they give people a way to express their dissatisfaction and push for change. When I see others out in the streets, organizing and demanding attention to issues that matter, it reminds me of the power we have as individuals to challenge the status quo. Protests help raise awareness about injustices that might otherwise go unnoticed, and they can be a catalyst for real, meaningful change. For me, they represent a critical way to hold governments and institutions accountable and ensure that our voices aren't drowned out. They remind me that political participation is not just a right, but a responsibility to help shape the society we want to live in.
/s in case it wasn't obvious
No, what I'm saying is that PS has features that simply do not exist in any of the current FOSS apps. How do you replicate smart objects or content-aware fill? How about sky replacement or the camera RAW filter?
Even that isn't really true. GIMP for example is nowhere near feature parity with Photoshop, not even close. it only just got non-desctructive editing a few months ago, something that Photoshop has had for at least 20 years if not more! The disparity gets much, much worse when you look at filters or tools like content-aware fill.
I would if I knew anything about programming or UI design, but unfortunately I don't.
Again, you're operating off your own limited experience. Ask someone who does Excel programming (yes it's a thing) if LibreOffice compares. It does not.
Can I ask your perspective on the comments here saying that Krita and Inkscape just aren’t comparable to their commercial alternatives?
I am a professional and have been doing this since... Well, I started with Mac OS 7, let's put it that way. Krita and Inkscape are like using craft scissors to cut sheetmetal. They're simply the wrong tool for the job. They are maybe 10% comparable to Adobe apps. Affinity apps are probably 60% or 70% comparable. Anybody who says Inkscape is a replacement for Illustrator simply does not use it in any serious professional capacity. It doesn't even have any means of adding paragraph spacing!
At best they will repurpose certain features to add them to some "pro" (but still web-based) version of Canva at $50/mo. There's no way in hell we'll get Linux apps for Affinity. I really wish we would because they are literally the only reason I still have a Windows VM.
The way you're describing it, it sounds more like you believe privacy is a privilege, not a right.
I don't necessarily disagree with your take here, but this is all conjecture until we see a 5th-gen in real combat. There was that story about an Israeli F-35 sneaking right up to a... I forget what, Syrian AF probably, but even if that anecdote really happened we haven't really seen them used in anger. As I said elsewhere here, China is really the only one who'd offer a near-peer opponent (unless god forbid the US go so far off the rails that they turn on NATO).
One example I should have mentioned earlier is that the F-35 has cameras outside the plane so that the helmet HUD allows the pilot to look "through" the fuselage. It does much more than simply show sensor readings inside the visor.

The CPC's shocking inability to read the room continues. Everyone is trying to distance themselves from the US, and they come up with this?
Trump again demands the annexation of Canada

In Madawaska, at the state's northern tip, fortunes are closely tied to its Canadian counterpart, Edmundston, across the St. John River.
Leopards will enjoy a well-deserved meal. A few choice morsels:
In the 2008 presidential election, more than 75% of Madawaska voters cast their ballots for Barack Obama, a Democrat. Last November, Donald Trump received just over 50% of Madawaska’s vote, becoming the first Republican presidential candidate to carry the town in decades.
“My father had 13 kids. We all lived and worked on the farm. We were born and raised Democrats because back then, in the ’40s and ’50s, the Democrats were the working man’s party,” Morneault said. “When I told my dad I’d turned Republican, he called me a turncoat. A traitor.”
Both Morneault and Campagna say their politics are informed by their religion. The bulk of their support for Trump comes from his opposition to abortion, and much of their disdain for Democrats comes from their support for LGBTQ+ rights.
‘China is not Cuba’s sugar daddy’: ties between communist nations weaken
In which China tells Cuba that it should stop being so communist if it wants to succeed:
China publicly supports Cuba’s right to choose its own path to economic development “in line with its national conditions”, but privately Chinese officials have long urged the Cuban leadership to shift from its vertically planned economy to something closer to the Chinese model, according to economists and diplomats briefed on the situation.
Chinese officials have been perplexed and frustrated at the Cuban leadership’s unwillingness to decisively implement a market-oriented reform programme despite the glaring dysfunction of the status quo, the people said.
Why does VirtualBox keep launching on boot?
cross-posted from: https://lemmy.ca/post/28766034
Sorry if this kind of question isn't allowed here, but I'm at my wit's end. VB randomly started launching on startup about 2 weeks ago (on EndeavourOS) and I can't figure out why. There's no shortcut in ~/config/autostart, it isn't in the KDE startup apps list, and I can't find anything virtualbox-related with systemctl either. There's also no setting in the VB app itself. WTF?
Based on recommendations in that thread, I also checked:
/etc/systemd/system
/etc/default/
vboxautostart.service
KDE "restore session" settings
Any ideas are much appreciated!

Is there any reason I shouldn't visit?
My wife and I are thinking of going to CR this winter, but we have a few other potential destinations on our shortlist. Talk me out of going to Costa Rica!
It's hip to be square(ish)
I don't think I've seen anyone else here with an 8:9 monitor, so I'll break the ice! The color theme is Layan Light; everything else is stock KDE.
Why do you grow mushrooms? What for?
I stumbled upon this community for the first time a few minutes ago. I like gardening and houseplants, but never heard of people recretionally growing mushrooms of the non-magical kind. Is it for food?
Bot no longer working?
It seems the bot has stopped reposting content from Reddit?
Fifth Order of Angels (1974 radio broadcast)

This was recorded in Cleveland for a radio broadcast; the tape became available as a bootleg and is known as one of the most important ones in the band's history.
It's the first-ever recording of "Fly by Night" and only their third performance with Neil. We can hear snippets of what would later become "By-Tor and the Snow Dog" in the Working Man solo.
A quote from Geddy regarding bootlegs:
A lot of people say 'It takes away from record sales' but [...] the fact is that any fan who buys a bootleg is still going to buy your record. So, who is it harming?
USB webcam lagging only in Zoom?
Sorry if this community isn't the right place to ask — I got a USB webcam that works great in Teams, but lags tremendously (3-4 seconds) in Zoom. I doubt the Zoom app is introducing that lag on its own, but how would I troubleshoot this?
This is on EndeavourOS (basically Arch)

LG DualUp (899 - 220 = 679)
Just picked one up. This is the best price I've seen this year. Very strange monitor but awesome for work - it even serves as a USB-C docking station with 90W power delivery.
Why does Pandoc get updated nearly every day?
Please forgive the noobish question, but what's going on with a document converter that it gets such frequent updates (and by extension forces a ton of Haskell updates)?
Trying Fedora. Never rebooted so often in my life
Even back in the Windows 3.1 or 95 days I didn't have to reboot this often - sometimes twice a day. Seems a bit excessive?
File permissions on mounted drive - can read/write but can't drag into apps?
RESOLVED: it was caused by the app being flatpak. use Flatseal!
I have a network drive mounted to my computer (PopOS). I have read & write access to everything in the drive and can drag and drop files between two Nautilus windows, but if I try to drag a file from the network drive into an email for example, I get a popup about file permissions. Is it because flatpak apps don't inherit my user permissions?
Finally using Linux full-time thanks to PopOS
I've been using Linux on and off for about 15 years, but was never able to make the leap to using it full-time until PopOS. It's been painless to use and does everything I need with only minor tweaks. Thank you System76! I can't wait until the Cosmic DE is released.
(too bad about the name, though...)
Using Linux for work - need a good email/contacts/calendar system
(apologies in advance if this isn't the right community for this question)
I've been flirting with Linux on and off for about 15 years and I think I'm ready to make the switch mostly full-time. I use a laptop for work and have a Microsoft 365 plan with email and such. I need to replace that with something Linux-friendly and would much prefer something that works with a desktop email client. Easy syncing of email, contacts and calendar to Android is a must.
Proton seems like it might be a good option but the privacy features aren't a huge selling point for me so I'm open to other options!
