  • They also inherited a health system that's full to bursting. I don't think 100% of the people in prison right now are a serious threat to the public, and building new prisons can induce demand so we end up locking more people away.

  • Justine Greening is peddling the same line as Rory Stewart and all the others - the Tory government was perfect up until Johnson/Truss/Sunak ruined everything. Never mind that Cameron was responsible for austerity and Brexit, and May came up with the hostile environment policy that caused the Windrush scandal. Those are just sensible Tory statesmen and totally weren't pandering to the far right.

  • Interesting bit at the end of the article:

Last Thursday, 90 leaders from the US met Rosenberg for an emergency meeting and urged him to proceed with disciplinary action against the 36 signatories.

So I guess this is another case of our institutions capitulating to the US. This shit sucks.

  • Yeah if we're using anecdotal data, the company I work at has more than 19 Spanish software developers working in London. Maybe there's a rebalancing going on, but since 2008 there has been a huge exodus of skilled workers from Spain.

  • Ragebait

  • Put them on the metal bit on the side of the sink (not in it), then later once it's cooled put it in the bin or food waste bin depending on if the bags are biodegradable. No smell, and the sink remains fully in service.

  • I feel like I'm missing something here, did they not see the big building called "Abbey Road Recording Studio"? It's probably the most famous recording studio in the world and I believe they occasionally do tours and events.

  • It's because they're all shit at politics. Any leader with an ounce of charisma and courage would at least be able to get us back into the single market. They all argued vociferously against it when the vote was happening. Then after a 52-48 vote 9 years ago they still can't muster up the courage to change something.

It's like the self-imposed fiscal rules: they could get rid of them overnight, but they'd need to make the case for it, and have a plan for how to use that new freedom. But they'd rather throw up their hands and complain about all the obstacles in their way.

  • I've got a lighter story to add to the thread. One girl in my school apparently wrote a letter to the parents of one of her friends, saying a bunch of stuff about her, slagging her off etc.

Nobody outside her group of friends knew (or cared) about it, but the teachers decided to hold an assembly about it, not mentioning any details but saying "if you know anything about this, talk to us". Of course the Streisand effect came into force and we were all talking and speculating about it. I'm still not fully sure of the details, and I find it crazy how the teachers decided that this drama between friends needed to be blown up into a big Incident.

    Podcast recommendations?

I've been loving the Private Eye podcast, but they only seem to do about one episode a month. I sometimes listen to The Rest Is Politics but I find it quite hard not to hate Alastair Campbell and Rory Stuart.

Any other good UK politics podcasts out there?
