  • Story from The Independent on May 5:

Trump announced Alcatraz reopening just hours after 'Escape from Alcatraz' aired on a South Florida PBS station

The 1979 film starring Clint Eastwood about the daring 1962 escape attempt aired on the local PBS channel just six hours before the president made his demand that the prison be reopened

  • That’s all true but it’s shocking how bad they are at judging character. Trump is such an obvious phony conman that it’s astounding that anyone over the age of 6 believes a word that comes out of his orange face. And he keeps fooling them over and over.

  • He’s a scorpion and his supporters are frogs.

The Scorpion and the Frog is an animal fable which teaches that vicious people cannot resist hurting others even when it is not in their own interests and therefore should never be trusted. This fable seems to have emerged in Russia in the early 20th century.

A scorpion wants to cross a river but cannot swim, so it asks a frog to carry it across. The frog hesitates, afraid that the scorpion might sting it, but the scorpion promises not to, pointing out that it would drown if it killed the frog in the middle of the river. The frog considers this argument sensible and agrees to transport the scorpion. Midway across the river, the scorpion stings the frog anyway, dooming them both. The dying frog asks the scorpion why it stung despite knowing the consequence, to which the scorpion replies: "I am sorry, but I couldn't help myself. It's my character."

  • Well yeah it isn’t a perfect analogy. Replace FDR with Churchill if you want.

But also America joined the war in December 1941 so it wasn’t at the very end. And sent a huge amount of equipment to England and Russia, like was done for Ukraine under Biden.

  • He doesn’t get the benefit of the doubt on this and should not be allowed to say such stupid shit as if he’s just some guest on a right wing podcast. He actually controls the world’s most powerful military and can make an invasion happen tomorrow.

His threats against allies and sovereign nations should be grounds for impeachment and removal from office before he does more damage do world stability and the reputation of the US.

  • Around the time of the election he was saying something about “God spared me so I could be president again”.

Yeah no. If there was a supernatural force at work it wasn’t a holy one. He either made a deal with the devil or he has a monkey’s paw.

  • Maybe you would like that fan fiction Harry Potter and the Methods of Rationality. A large part of it is poking fun at how magic works and how wizards behave and how dumb Quidditch is.

For example there are all kinds of rules about Transfiguration that don’t make sense and that is explored quite a bit.

  • He’s going to make money of supplements and other stuff marketed with “Make America Healthy Again” branding.

When hearing that, you might say “aren’t there ethics rules that prevent government officials from profiting from the policies they enact or promote?”

And then you don’t hear a response from me because I died laughing.

  • Yes to what you said except we actually didn’t vote for this. Sure, way too many people voted for Trump but he only came out ahead because of voter purges and voter suppression tactics that republicans have been using for years. Also the concentrated propaganda from Fox, talk radio, and social media made sure that half of voters aren’t even aware of reality.

To be clear, this is different than the “stop the steal” lies that maga was telling in 2020. This is about systemic ways that republicans have an unfair advantage in elections.

Here’s one article about that, there are others.

  • The Manchurian Candidate came out in 1959 and was made a movie in 1962. I guarantee that the people who do game theory about coups and nuclear war have thought about a willing or unwilling traitor in power. It’s one of the most confusing things about all this that they haven’t done anything to stop it.

Linux Mint - Steam Launching and library location issues

A few months ago I switched from Windows 10 to Linux Mint. I'm mostly able to play games but there are some annoyances. I'm hoping an expert can help identify these issues.

    Summary of issues

    1. Shortcuts to steam and to individual games is wonky
    2. Having trouble using different proton versions and trying different ones causes a situation where I have to reboot to use steam
    3. Something I don't understand about remounting disks and the interaction with steam on how it references it's library.

    Detail

    1. First of all, When I installed steam, it added a link under Menu->Games->Steam. This link doesn't work. It appears to launch but then the screen just blinks every once in a while. I have to end up killing steam from the process monitor. If I open a terminal and type "steam", and then run games from the steam UI window, they mostly run ok. Sometimes I am able to run a game by clicking the link that gets added to Menu->Games. This actually opens the steam
