Murray Sinclair, former senator who led Truth and Reconciliation Commission, dead at 73

Murray Sinclair, the Anishinaabe senator and renowned Manitoba lawyer who led the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, has died at age 73.

Sinclair died at a Winnipeg hospital early Monday morning "peacefully and surrounded by love," his family said in a statement.

"Mazina Giizhik (the One Who Speaks of Pictures in the Sky) committed his life in service to the people: creating change, revealing truth, and leading with fairness throughout his career," the statement said.

  • I honestly think it's egotistical dipshits who can't admit to being wrong about "there's no such thing as climate change" they've been going on and on about, for decades.

Only now they really can't deny it, so it's this little nit-picking of everything that still lets them say "see, I'm still so smart about this stuff, and smart me thinks we still shouldn't do anything about climate change".

    Gonna get us all killed.

Government concerned about public scrutiny in mandating workers back to office

Treasury Board says 3-day-a-week mandate still offers flexibility

Federal officials pointed to concerns about "public scrutiny" when the government mandated workers back into the office, even as workers reported they felt more productive working from home, documents show.

Documents prepared by the Treasury Board Secretariat (TBS) before the announcements of return to the office mandates were released to the Public Service Alliance of Canada (PSAC) under an access to information request, and shared with CBC News.

The documents show how TBS looked at global trends, raised concerns about public trust and had very little internal information on productivity when deciding to mandate workers back to the office.

The union says the documents point to the lack of justification for the mandated return to the office.

*"They had an opportunity here to really modernize the public service and move it forward, and yet here we are talking about cookie cutter approaches, butts in seats

Trial of convoy protest leaders concludes

Tamara Lich, Chris Barber accused of orchestrating 2022 demonstration that took over downtown Ottawa It started more than a year ago, took nearly 50 days in a courtroom and may not be decided until next year, but the trial of two leaders of the 2022 "Freedom Convoy" protest in Ottawa finally ended Friday.

Tamara Lich and Chris Barber pleaded not guilty to mischief, intimidation, obstruction and other charges.

Crown prosecutors called 16 witnesses and presented hours of video evidence and numerous social media posts in an effort to prove their case.

I seriously hope these two racist assholes get what they deserve, but with Lawrence Greenspon as their lawyer, who knows.

Winston Churchill portrait stolen from Château Laurier recovered by Ottawa police — in Italy

The "Roaring Lion" has been found.

A 1941 portrait of British prime minister Sir Winston Churchill by famed Canadian photographer Yousuf Karsh, which was reported stolen from the lobby of Ottawa's Fairmont Château Laurier hotel in August 2022, has been located in Italy, sources tell CBC News.

Ottawa police investigators, who tracked the photo down, say it is set to be returned to the hotel

  • I know what you're saying, and I agree that X is extremely problematic.

I think the difference is that X is owned by private individuals, whereas they're saying here that TikTok is under the control of the Chinese state. I wonder if there are different rules at play for estate actors?

  • There's something unsettling about PostMedia eating up all of these locals. They've shown that they're interested in being Fox News for Canada; playing fast and loose with facts, and stoking fear and anger.

  • Not really something that is legal that should be illegal, but I would love to see this nonsense that corporate executives can't be held criminally responsible (the corporation is) for their illegal acts. I think it would correct an awful lot of shitty things corporations do really quickly (assuming enforcement).

Did you know there's a miniature Château Montebello across the river from the original?

Legend has it grandson of timber baron J.R. Booth built the replica after being ejected from original

I'd never heard this before, so I thought I would share.

    Looking for x86 recommendations

    Hey all!

I've spent a couple of days skimming the web to no result, and was wondering if anyone could provide a suggestion?

I have an old (donated) USB audio interface, which has a Linux kernel module, but only runs on x86. I was hoping to make a little project out of it, and see if I can run it from a mini PC.

I'm hoping to find a low-cost x86 option to run this, and realize that that factor will make it inherently a little pricier. Are there any common, older models I should keep an eye out for on the used market?

What, in your opinion, would make Ottawa better?

    Hey everyone,

Kind of quiet here, so I thought I'd ask a question that's been on my mind for a while:

What would make Ottawa better, in your view? Big or small.

For me, it would be to improve the walkability. I walk, jog, cycle, motorbike, and drive, all fairly frequently. It drives me wild how long it takes (mid winter or bad weather) from the time I press a crosswalk button, to the time the lights change. I'd love to see that improved.
