It seemed like a good idea at the time.
That's irl cyberpunk ice. Absolutely love that for us.

I think it's a human problem. It's in our genes. Some of us are supremely selfish and some of those people have no regard for the health and wellbeing of anyone who gets in their way. Just look at our history.
You'll drive yourself crazy trying to worry about it. Shit's bad. It feels like someone's master plan is coming together. The world is changing and it's really scary. A little paranoia is called for, but you can't let it get to you.
The truth is humans are really really really bad at predicting the future. We don't have the full picture and probably won't in our lifetimes. The heritage foundation has plans but they aren't the only player and their hold on power is weak. In 2026, with fair elections, they lose congress. That pretty much makes Trump a lame duck and slams on the breaks of whatever shenanigans are going on in the south. Maybe that's when the civil war pops off for realsies, but we won't know until it happens.
We all need to be keeping ourselves safe, sane, and healthy. That's the only thing most people can do at this point. Take care of ourselves and our neighbors if we can. Pay attention, but better not to try to guess what's coming and ignore anyone who claims to know.
I don't think state national guards will be invading the neighbors in the near future (Trump's second term). Ice and state militias might work together against sanctuary cities, but invading the neighbors is civil war, even if it's bloodless. Maybe Trump's third term and if that happens all bets are off.
As far as what to do, for us little people, there isn't much. Calling your reps does nothing but annoy them and they ignore peaceful protest. Unfortunately until the 2026 midterms, MAGA controls everything and can do what they want. And that assumes we have fair elections. The best thing you can do is keep yourself safe and volunteer your extra time and/or resources to some form of mutual aid. The only way out is through.
It seems like you're really invested in this, but don't forget to enjoy what you can while you can. Nothing has happened yet and there is little you or I can do to change what is to come, but it hasn't happened yet and you are still (relatively) safe. Try to enjoy it while it lasts.
I hope you'd be right in that case. If an impeachment of Trump got to a senate vote that was expected to pass (removing him from office), I just don't see him going quietly. Especially considering he would still be in control of the military and well loved by the cops.
I doubt that would come to pass though. The likelihood of the democrats getting enough votes to impeach and remove in 2026 seems far fetched. Especially since the current republican controlled congress is actively trying to pass voter suppression laws. Not to mention democratic voters don't turn out for midterms like they do for presidential elections. Maybe that changes, but from here it seems improbable.
The only way that remotely happens is if the dems take congress in 2026 and impeach and remove him (they'd probably have to get vance too). Which seems highly unlikely and has a high risk of another jan 6 like event.
I'd like to believe it, really, but there is no way that he ever sees justice for his crimes. He'll die of a cheeseburger-related heart attack before that happens.

Pretty much. I don't see how we can fix what's wrong with this country from within the system. The US is fundamentally broken because we have lost any semblance of a shared reality. There are four distinct and incompatible realities fighting for dominance: MAGA, republicans, democrats, and leftists. All four groups believe in a different set of facts about the world we live in and let their fear and cruelty drive their actions. It's not sustainable.
I wish there was something we could do to reunite our understanding of the world we share, but it's too far gone now.
B5 would be called woke propaganda because of the parallels to what's going on in the world today. The narn/membari conflict, the night's watch (or whatever it was called), etc.
As an outsider, I promise the grass is not greener over here. Being part of a community, be that family, friends, or local groups gives you much more ability to affect change. Alone you have no chance of changing even the most local and basic issues.
The best thing you could do is have this conversation offline with the people in your life. You'd be surprised how willing people are to work together towards a larger goal if given some direction and concrete goals.
What would everyone be leaving them for then?
Specifically his 1928 book Propaganda which basically created PR and modern advertising.
In my 20's I had three dreams. The first I was at my parents house preparing for a zombie invasion. I knew we would be fine if I found "it" (no idea what it was) but was unable to in the dream. The second dream I was at the office trying to find "it" again and knew I only had three chances. The third dream I was in the desert at the mouth of a skull shaped cave. I had a shovel and knew it was my last chance to find "it". I failed and awoke knowing I had lost something important but undefinable. The dreams were all about a month apart and so vivid they felt real.
Another interesting note on my dreams is almost all of the really intensely real dreams I've been able to recall take place in different parts of the same "world". Sometimes in the dream I can recall other dreams and where they are in relation to the current dream, most often I make the connection after waking.
If you do make one be very careful. A lot of countries have laws about what people under 18 can do online. Running afoul of those laws could get someone in a lot of trouble. Besides lying about your age and making an account anyway is an internet rite of passage.
You knowing nothing about fishing is a perfect example. Would it be a good idea for you to set policy about fishing? No, there is too much nuance and complexity in managing existing sea life. Some fishing is good for a healthy ecosystem, too much fishing is bad. To manage the shared resource of the sea requires the input of fishing folks, conservationists, environmentalists, and anyone else with an interest. No one group or even small coalition should be allowed to control any aspect of commercial fishing. It must be decided collectively or not at all.
By force I mean anything that would compel action from someone with a threat of consequences. Changing the incentives is not force because you're not imposing consequences, just making the prospect less appealing.
There is virtue in minding your own business. If it doesn't effect you directly you don't need an opinion on it and you certainly shouldn't share it or expect anyone who is effected to care what you think. You're a bad person if you support people who want to use force to control how other people live their lives. You're evil if you would use force to control how someone else lives their life.
I can't find a link, but I saw an article the other day that said /r/assholedesign was going to be one of the first in protest of the move.
Don't feed the trolls. If you find a bigot willing to have a good faith debate, maybe, but there is no reasoning with cult members. They have to want to change.
I prefer Lemmy. The community is way friendlier and there are 9000% fewer bots. Also I frequently deleted my reddit accounts for mental health reasons and on occasion in protest and rebuilding a reddit account to the point you can comment in most subs is so annoying. In like a year of using Lemmy on and off I've had more real conversations with real people than I did in thriteen years as a redditor.
This case sets up a legal battle between Texas’ near-total abortion ban and New York’s shield law that protects doctors from out-of-state prosecution.
This lawsuit is the first attempt to test what happens when state abortion laws are at odds with each other. New York has a shield law that protects providers from out-of-state investigations and prosecutions, which has served as implicit permission for a network of doctors to mail abortion pills into states that have banned the procedure.
