How good is Lemmy dealing with censorship and why does the sign-up process on lemmy.ml involve having to copy a sentence from "The Principles of Communism"?

  • "The ideal subject of totalitarian rule is not the convinced Nazi or the convinced communist, but people for whom the distinction between fact and fiction (i.e., the reality of experience) and the distinction between true and false (i.e., the standards of thought) no longer exist." She pretty much nailed it, didn't she? Fuck up education has been the Republican playbook since Reagan, and clearly successful.

As an aside, I was impressed by the Marxist kibbutz started in Israel when it was formed by the Brits (legally or not). They were wildly successful. I don't know of any other true Marxist orgs.

  • To clarify, Hitler and Marx are not in any way related. Hitler was a fascist, racist dictator (like Trump and Putin). True Marxism would be if the government of the USA was formed by, and responsive to the working class. A Marxist government (true communism) has an obligation to take care of it's workers, not let them die because they can't afford health care.

It's a short explanation, but it's pretty much correct. Join any server, and change later if you're not comfortable.

  • As for the USA, let me put it this way: If Trump gets elected, with the tech tools the govt has, we will see, at the very best, another Hong Kong, with anyone that disfavors the Repubs disappearing, some permanently. At the worst, we will see another Nazi Germany. He himself proposed executing people.

If you practice privacy and can teach others, your skills will be valuable to the underground resistance.

PayPal Is Planning an Ad Business Using Data on Its Millions of Shoppers

Wall Street Journal (paywalled) The digital payments company plans to build an ad sales business around the reams of data it generates from tracking the purchases as well as the broader spending behaviors of millions of consumers who use its services, which include the more socially-enabled Venmo app.

PayPal has hired Mark Grether, who formerly led Uber’s advertising business, to lead the effort as senior vice president and general manager of its newly-created PayPal Ads division.

  • When we were in New Zealand we learned that most of the wool goes to China for processing. So I bought a Merino undershirt from aliexpress. Definitely not as nice as Icebreaker, but the price keeps me warm!

  • I'm now on fixed income but I appreciate FOSS. I usually try to donate, especially if the project accepts bitcoin which I've had for a while so it costs me less. Too bad many projects don't. That includes Wikipedia and they keep asking why I stopped.

    Lemmy Client with Filter

I'm not sure where to ask this so I started here: here: Is there a Lemmy client that has a filter. I want to hide posts from particular accounts. Like anyone for hexbear, for example. I know I can set up my own instance, but that's more work than I want right now. I was hoping someone knew a client that could do this.

Locally Acquired Malaria in Florida and Texas

CDC issued an alert after identification of locally acquired malaria cases (P. vivax) in two U.S. states (Florida [4] and Texas [1]) within the last 2 months. Locally acquired mosquito-borne malaria has not occurred in the United States since 2003 when eight cases of locally acquired P. vivax malaria were identified in Palm Beach County, FL (1). Mosquito surveillance and control measures have been implemented in the affected area.
