  • I love this book so much and read it every few years. The first half is a fish-out-of-water story about an intrepid traveler surviving and thriving using his wits alone (and some luck, plot devices, and a pinch of deus-ex-machina). The second half is about why powerful institutions suck so much, human history is a mess, and generally why we can’t have nice things.

As a hopeful misanthrope I highly recommend it.

  • In an attempt to preserve my own sanity I’ve been reading the entire Discworld series since about October. Just finished Lords and Ladies, which I don’t think I read before and am now re-reading Mort for maybe the 5th or 6th time.

  • TOML

  • because your kids speak it?

  • I honestly have to wonder at what point people will collectively say "why the hell are we letting them do this" ? Not sure what happens after that, but it seems like it must have to happen at some point, right? Right?

  • Admittedly, we were not very good at this particular job.

  • I’m surprised China hasn’t volunteered to implement a massive solar/electric project there. The island’s pretty small, there’s no hard military advantage to doing so, it’s within their belt & road initiative, and would piss off the US.

  • Physics -> chemistry -> biology. The further you zoom in, the more you come to grips with the just staggering number of hugely improbable events that lead to us being here. I feel bad for people who need to invoke religion to explain this, as it really hides the beauty of it all.

  • Yeah, it’s a global commodity, like oil but without the petrodollars.

  • That’s why they’ll fit their guards with death collars to prevent them from getting ideas.

  • I can’t think of a single thing that would garner such support. You could suggest an amendment that convicted child rapists couldn’t hold public office and there would be enough pushback that even that wouldn’t succeed.

  • It’s times like this I’m glad I speak Gen Alpha.

  • I will 100% be using “length disadvantaged timeline” in my next planning meeting

  • It’s hard to beat the Culture series. While not quite the same I found that Ken MacLeod’s Engines of Light Trilogy and Ursula LeGuin’s Hanish Cycle books were both excellent in their own ways and hit a lot of similar notes.

  • This is at least in part because Tesla is shifting manufacturing over to humanoid robots because he has to make a million of them to get his trillion dollar payout. His stupid shareholders are essentially paying him to nuke the company (unless you believe the humanoid robot hype)

  • oh very nice, I haven't read this one but will add it to my list now. On a scale of 1-10 how depressing is it?

  • This is a great sentiment in the age of "AI is going to eat all labor." I'd like to know how to dance around and see cute babies while keeping a roof over my head when there's 80% unemployment tho.

  • But who wore it better?
