  • I feel like the rise of corporate personhood is the elephant in the room this article seems to avoid acknowledging.

  • I don't really know much about him, and I can't dispute your personal gut feeling. But I'm not familiar with anything that gives me this feeling.

For what it's worth, I think in general that if you say, "I just don't quite trust

    <name>

. I didn't know why, but they creep me out," about pretty much anyone in public political life you can probably find a basis for that over a long enough time scale.

  • Ah today's batch of fresh horrors has arrived.

Fucking hell. The courage of this person. That poem at the end nearly broke me.

  • Really the whole thing. I saw you explained what a 50" is, which helps. Additionally, though, it sounds like you're shocked by some element of the coverage. I wasn't clear if that was the case and if so by which part of the coverage you're specifically dismayed.

Can you state your central point?

  • Yeah: a failure to get away with it.

Last year the army arrested guards who raped Palestinian prisoners and protesters that included members of the Keneset rioted and stormed the prison (Sde Tieman).

There is no way anyone is getting held criminally accountable for this.

  • I apologize, but I don't know what this means.

Mahmoud Khalil, the Columbia University graduate who has been in immigration detention in Louisiana for more than a month, was barred from attending the birth of his firstborn child Monday, after immigration officials denied him permission to attend the birth in person, according to emails reviewed by CNN.

On Sunday morning, attorneys for Khalil wrote to Melissa Harper, director of the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement field office in New Orleans, requesting that Khalil be released from detention for two weeks so he could travel to New York and be with his wife when she delivered their son.

Khalil’s case has sparked a firestorm of controversy since he was arrested outside his Columbia University residence where he was living with his then-pregnant wife, a US citizen. ...

I just read this and thought... Jesus Christ, that's fucking ice cold.

I feel like they could've agreed to a 48 hour suspension in his detention just to be at the hospital and then carted him back to a

  • I just set up a Nextcloud server this weekend, and this is the second time since I've heard people complaining about it.

I guess I should try some of the alternatives.

  • I was referring to when you said that you consider all downvotes poisonous.

My point is that if you live your life in a way where you create an excuse to dismiss anyone who disagrees with you, you foreclose on logic, and growth, and really your ability to persuade people too.

  • I'm still drinking my coffee, so if you're joking I apologize for not picking that up. But downvotes are critique. No one enjoys critique, but it's not poisonous. It's how we learn and grow.

Even if you make your comments in good faith you can still have an opinion people think is misinformed or bad. And if you reject all critique you're cutting off your own opportunity to learn.

  • How do you determine which downvotes are mindless and which are considered?

  • I think this requires us to look into what the definition of that word is, as a verb.

To "police" is to dominate and enforce conformity, often with the threat of overwhelming consequence. A lot of people don't realize that the origin of the modern police department was crowd control. They were invented in cities in the early twentieth century to suppress riots and protests. The day-to-day patrol work is just an extension of that core mandate.

I think that if you trained folks up the way we do for volunteer fire brigades that'd be a lot more like working as an EMT than a soldier. Sometimes you might have to lay some hands. But, imo that is not policing if you only respond when someone calls for help as opposed to showing up uninvited to enforce the state's prerogatives.

Showing up to assist and protect someone who is crying out for help isn't actually "policing", imo. That's rendering aid. You aren't acting to disincentivize non-compliance with state directives. So I would not consider such a group to qualify as police, semantically.

  • You know... I'm a big fan of some of the wild lefty stuff OP is posting, but I also endorse all of this! Those are some great ideas.

Frankly, I don't hate cops. I don't like the system (and I'm not a big fan of the individuals who participate in it), but if someone is willing to be agree to operate with this kind of accountability, I'm willing to give them a chance.

  • This is true, but also incomplete.

I've been thinking about this a lot. I'm a socialist activist in Oakland (home of the original Black Panters!), and I gotta tell you, this is where the rubber really meets the road.

First, Oakland knows what's up. This is a very politically aware town, with some moderate but genuine leftists in government. We do a lot of community uplift here.

Second, Oakland has very few police. We didn't "defund the police" so much as "mismanage our budget", but we have very few cops relative to the size of our city.

Third: our poorest neighborhoods are suffering TERRIBLY from violent crime and property crime. The city is still nice, but the same areas in which a lot of poor, non-white folks can tell you stories about bad interactions with cops will be the first to tell you that alleviating poverty is important, but they need help NOW. They need someone to call when bullets start flying.

Frankly, I think OP -- and the Panthers! -- have it dead fucking right! We DO need folks on the street ready to step up. We need services, we need parks, we need gun control... we need a lot of alternatives to policing. But we also need direct timely response teams to problems happening NOW. And my fellow lefties should start chewing on that idea, especially as the fascist state begins sending the secret police to bag-and-tag your fuckin' neighbor!

    I don't like it. But that's where we're at.

  • I think the 3rd option is just this with licensing.

I don't expect a system of community policing right now to be good, but let's start with the idea of cops who are required to live and serve in the same area. No traveling to the next town over to police people.

Next, no qualified immunity. No special exemptions to laws or unique authorization of violence. You have no additional powers under the state, just the same rights as everyone else.

If you required local protectors to organize within a licensing body that only let people participate in their organization after meeting requirements I think what you'd get would be an improvement on what we have without being totally chaotic and lawless.

  • I love this meme because this is the absolute spiciest take and I'm totally here for it.

I know people don't like this concept, but I think it needs more genuine discussion. There is a general unwillingness to address the question of who comes to lend aid to someone who is being threatened. Personally, I like the answer "your neighbors, who've trained in deescalation and have no unique authority" a lot better than either "the state" or "no one ❤️ ".

  • He is a former Marxist?? I find that bewildering, hilarious, and doubtful.

I think it's great when people have open enough minds to radically rethink their beliefs, but I hope I'm never so brainrotted as to somehow strawman my own former beliefs.

  • This meme doesn't work because a conservative literally bought me a copy of that book and it's infantile.

This book is titled "Basic Economics" because Sowel is a troll, and the economics in his book are largely correct but incomplete to the point of misinforming people. This is an incredibly "conservative" book through-and-through.

  • I'm not prescriptive in the order, but I would imagine they're most likely to occur in tandem over a period of years.

  • I find this surprising, because frankly I agree.

I don't know much about Dorsey, but in Musk's case, I think this is another case of him espousing a good idea he'd never actually honor.

I think that anyone should be able to make movies with Mickey Mouse and no one should need to license code. But I suspect that like with free expression, these are values most proponents only like when it's benefiting them.

Also, as for the alternatives to support creatives, I would say start with universal services. Universal housing, universal healthcare, universal education, universal food. We would have so much more art if we recognized that no one should have to "earn" their survival. Once that's guaranteed -- and abolish billionaires and extreme wealth inequality too -- I think discussions over how to support creatives would take place from a much more favorable starting point.

I had a thought about the popularization of solarpunk today

My brother pointed out to me that in last week's episode of his podcast, Ezra Klein namechecked solarpunk in a blink-and-you-miss it mention:

“One common argument I heard on the left - Lina Khan made this point actually in our pages - was that this proved our whole paradigm of AI development was wrong. That we were seeing that we did not need all this compute, we did not need these giant companies, that this was showing a way towards a decentralized, almost solarpunk version of AI development, and in a sense the American system and imagination had been captured by, like, these three big companies.”

The context isn't as interesting as the quote. He was talking about different approaches to developing strong AI. It's only interesting because he used the term "solarpunk" in such a casual manner in a discussion that wasn't about solarpunk or even fiction. It reveals that it's in his vocabulary, and that he's ingesting this in his media diet. For those who don't know Klein, he's a very

Looking for advice on replacing my battery

My husband bought a Stark Drive bike through Kickstarter about 6 years ago. It's served us incredibly well, and we've put thousands and thousands of miles on it, but the battery is now truly cooked.

I think it's time to finally buy a replacement, which sells for $600: https://starkdrive.bike/accessories/17ah-battery-pack/

Before I do, though, I just wanted to get some expert opinion. Are there any other options that are cheaper or more environmentally conscious? Are there places that can capably disassemble the battery locally and rebuild it with fresh cells? Would doing so have any advantages against just buying the new one? Thanks.

    The 1000 Year Cleanup

I'm looking for a GM and players for a post-capitalist scifi adventure game.

The game setting and system are from an indie RPG called Fully Automated! (We have a community: c/fullyautomatedrpg )

I'm one of the developers, looking for a GM and possibly players on behalf of some other players who don't have quite enough people to start a new group.

    The Game

The game takes place 100 years into our post-capitalist future. It's cyberpunky in style, but with an optimistic, earthy flavor. It uses a custom 2d10 system, but it's very flexible and modable if you prefer something else. The GM is welcome to use the rules as described in the manual (which are very straightforward) or just graft the campaign onto their preferred system.

We're currently playtesting a new campaign and we've got a few too many players for one play group. The extra players asked if I could look for a GM and a few more players to make a second group. I'm actually a p

Tips for disposing of fallen leaves

    cross-posted from: https://slrpnk.net/post/16130943

My mom was complaining that the city has limits on how many leaves that they'll pick up, and she's got bags and bags of leaves stuffed into black garbage bags. This seems like a problem that should have some kind of backyard solution.

I've done a cursory search, and see that leaves are very compostable. They can also apparently be turned into "mold", though I don't fully understand what this means.

But I also see that there is a lot of variety in compost bins, and they're quite expensive. So I'm wondering: what's the best strategy for making leaves go away? She's not specifically interested in the product of the leaves, she just wants to find somewhere to put them after she rakes them up. Any ideas?

Examining Octavia Butler's unpublished Parable of the Sower sequels

I gotta say that I feel weird reading this examination of Octavia Butler's notes.

I'm reading Parable of the Talents right now, and I had to stop. It's gotten too fucking dark. It's about the fascist takeover of America by Christian Nationalists, and a major character just died, and there is sexual exploitation of children... I really like Butler and Parable of the Sower, but this just got so dark I decided to read the summary and find out if I wanted to read more, and I don't think I can read this, at least not right now.

Reading about the unpublished sequels feels even worse. It seems like Butler had a head full of so much darkness and cynicism, and her published works were just the processed output after she managed to find the least brutal version of her thoughts. These books were her at her most hopeful! YIKES.

I like her and these books, but I just had to vent about some of this.

An interesting short: "HYPERVOLTAIC CHRONICLES" by THE LINE ANIMATION

    cross-posted from: https://slrpnk.net/post/14202920

There was a post on Reddit that praised the ubiquitous "Dear Alice" commercial, and inevitably a comment criticizing praise for a commercial. This led to me to wonder more about who it was that made this famous solarpunk advertisement. The answer is an animation studio called The Line. I went looking at some of their other work, and came across this interesting demo short for what appears to be a proof of concept or pilot for a solarpunky animated monster hunting series.

I don't love the heavy use of guns. But setting that aside, I think the art is interesting. I'm fascinated to see what people are doing with the artistic and conceptual toolset solarpunk offers, and I think this is a use case that I wouldn't mind seeing more of.

Unfortunately, this demo is as far as the project went. But I'm happy to see that the folks at The Line appear to have some broader interest in solarpunk, and I hope they keep putting it into pr

What is going on in a small Ohio town that Trump and Vance won't stop threatening

Springfield, Ohio became suddenly famous nationally when Trump claimed that an influx of Haitian migrants were devouring residents' pets. I went looking to see what the town is experiencing from the perspective of local news, and it looks surprising nuanced.

It appears that the town saw a rapid influx of migrants fleeing violence in Haiti. The town has since experienced a strain in its ability to function in notable ways because of the population shock. The issues include a sudden reduction in the housing supply and an increase in traffic and inexperienced drivers. One particularly bad traffic accident killed a child during a school bus crash.

The city government has seemed to largely avoid blaming new arrivals themselves. However they've expressed a sense of betrayal towards Biden and the federal government for granting thousands of people entry into the country without appearing to recognize any responsibility for helping them resettle or aiding their destination cities in accommod
