  • The idea is solid even if the execution is awful. I didn't say they were doing it WELL. Just that keeping track of who is doing what online will be v v v important is body enhancements grow in popularity. You really want black hats hacking people's body parts? Lemmy is kek sometimes

what are some studies/data definitively showing abortion bans/restrictions are ineffective policy for reducing the rate fetuses are aborted?

Remaking as title wasn't phrased as a question (technically correct mod, best kind of correct).

So, having the abortion debate with a friend I’ve known for 10 years. He got sucked into the right wing Youtube algorithms in the last few years, we were roommates when it first started and it made me roll my eyes. Morally, I’m not going to be able to change his mind about valuing life at conception, vs my perspective of valuing human consciousness being the determining philosophical perspective. I’m of the belief it is morally wrong to abort a fetus at the point that relevant experts consider the baby “conscious”. So somewhere in the 2nd trimester. His mother started and owned her own defense/immigration law firm for 20 years, so he is familiar with how debate is supposed to be done. I am good friends with his mother, and after he debated her about it, she did change her mind from being staunchly pro choice to being more neutral on the topic. I haven’t asked her yet what he brought up that

Is it a reasonable expectation to check peoples profiles when commenting on their comments to ensure I am pronouning them correctly?

Looks like my account was banned/restricted for the above interaction, have already sent the mods on world an email asking if they'd be willing to reverse that. Had an episode of psychosis a few months ago where I did say some offensive stuff, (understandably) got a 3 month ban on .lol for that, so could see my account having been flagged.

I uh, I don’t think it’s reasonable to expect people to check others profiles to ensure we are correctly pronouning them… when making a throw away comment that is less than 10 words involving a ludicrously common saying. Jerboa does not show users pronouns. I could switch to an app that DOES show the pronouns, do any Lemmings have a recommendation for a free Lemmy mobile app that has that feature?

Edit: Edie chimed in, Jerboa does show pronouns. It's a formatting issue with mobile vs browser (She has them on individual text lines so they don't appear on mobile).

Was just going to respond to the user in question to let them know I wasn't purposeful

Someone left a 4 inch rock rock with a line circle carved in it in the dirt next to my door

What do you guys think was the intention with this? I recently had an episode of mania, and was behaving a bit oddly, but I confirmed with my mother (this was her condo I'm renting it) that it wasn't here when she left and I've never seen it before :|

rebuilt pc parts en route after 9 years

I've delayed making the transition to a fully "secure" set up until upgrading my PC and moving to a Linux distro from windows. now that that is happening and my parts are in the mail, what does the Lemmy community recommend for my personal network data to remain as eyes free as possible from potential hostile gov & non gov entities?

For context, I have 2 years of Ubuntu experience on a non daily driver laptop, recently acquired a CCNA, and have a deeply seated hatred & paranoia of being spied on. I have many hours of security content bookmarked, but am curious to hear the Lemming communities recommendations. I am currently studying for my AWS cloud practitioner cert, then Linux+, then my CCNP.

    TLDR me Lemmy 🤣

    ICS/SCADA with/vs CCNP

I recently entered the IT field in help desk and have gotten my CCNA. I'm currently studying for my AWS cloud practitioner cert, and was going to go for Linux+ then the CCNP after that. However I've been doing some research into ICS/SCADA systems and the area deeply interests me. Do you think that's a viable career path in lieu of the CCNP, & if so what ICS/SCADA cert or course would you recommend ??

Question of recommended home camera system

A friends mother that I used to rent a room from asked me to help her set up an outside home security system with motion sensors so she could watch the neighborhood cats cat around in her yard. I thought I'd screenshotted a previous Lemmy thread that had a perfect recommendation, nope. Can't find it.

I recently got my CCNA and figured it would be good practice to set it up for her. she wants 4 cameras with motion sensors for each. What system would you recommend, with what software? (Not connected to the internet of course, going to set up a server for her with one of the old computers she has laying around)

Thanks Lemmy! And yes I realize I could Google but figured I'd ask y'all lmao

Rap music video with an island, with a lake, with an island on it etc

I saw this music video years ago where it starts with a very zoomed out drone shot of this island, and as it zooms in on the island, you see a lake, with another island in it, that has a lake on it, with another island, another lake, then ANOTHER island, eventually zooming in on this guys mansion where he is rapping the song. I have not been able to find this video for years, can any of yall lemmings assist me |: my google fu has repeatedly failed.
