The Flugelhorn is such a beautiful instrument! I almost had a chance to play a solo on one in my high school marching band, but the first chair trumpet stole it from me, lol.

I tend to like jazz that leans more latin, like Chuck Mangione or Arturo Sandoval. They're both typically a little more upbeat than the example you gave, but of the two Mangione is definitely chiller than Sandoval, some of Sandoval's stuff gets pretty frenetic.

I think the thing that has been most encouraging to me about these protests is seeing pictures folks in small towns and deep red states are posting of protests there.

Hey just FYI, links in the post title don't work on Beehaw. Here's the link to the steam store page: https://store.steampowered.com/app/2339840/Enter_the_Gungeon_2/
I loved the first EtG and played a ton of it. I'm not entirely sold on the new 3d art style, but I'll try to give it a fair shot once it gets here.
Also, the original Enter the Gungeon is available on Xbox Game Pass for any of you folks that have it. It's absolutely worth checking out.

IMO Stevie T is best taken in very small doses.

My kids are obsessed with Imagine Dragons. Honestly it could be worse, but it could also definitely be better. They're mostly just kind of there, although some of the songs definitely get grating when they've been played 200 times 😅

Elon Musk, in first DOGE team interview: "This is a revolution"
He said the quiet part out loud...

I'm on board with Eno here. There are issues with the current wave of generative AI, but the main reason they are such huge problems is the people who are pushing these technologies have zero concern for the potential social harms they could cause or exacerbate.

Please have the common sense not to call for violence on a public forum, especially one run by other people. I get where you're coming from, but it's doing anyone any good.

This kind of behavior is antithetical to Beehaw's ethos. It's fine to be dismissive of systems, but ever user here is a person who should be treated with kindness and respect. Please do better in the future.

Yeah, Discord's easy/free voice chat was the reason it got so popular. It was so much easier to use than any of the alternatives, and in-game VC was a mixture of piss-poor quality and full of toxic 14 year olds.

The audience for an author’s gripping life story in every goddamn recipe was never humans, either. That was just for Google’s algorithm. I know this sentiment gets repeated a lot, but I'm not sure it's universally true. I know back in 2012/2012 my wife was very invested in a bunch of bloggers along the lines of Pioneer Woman. A lot of the posts on those blogs were a mixture of personal anecdotes and recipes and I know my wife was there for both. It's frustrating when you're ready to cook and just want the recipe, but that's not the only (or maybe even the primary) way that a lot of these cooking/homemaking blogs were made to be consumed, I don't think.

Proponents say that that it should be a relatively humane method of execution: Nitrogen is inert and the body doesn't react to breathing pure Nitrogen with a feeling of suffocation the way that it does with CO2, and suddenly replacing the air a person is breathing with pure inert gas can lead to unconsciousness within just one or two breaths. In practice, though, the first Nitrogen Gas execution that was carried out in Alabama last year did not go that smoothly. I'm not sure about subsequent executions, there have been a handful.

Hey @[email protected], I realize you're not trying to be hurtful to anyone in this comment (except maybe Musk, but honestly fuck that guy) but including a common condition that many folks live with in a list of things that make Musk a bad manager likely is hurtful to those people, even if that's not your intention. If Elon does have ADHD, that's clearly not the problem since I suspect we all know tons of people with ADHD who are a) great at their jobs and b) not trying to dismantle the United States. In the future, please try to "Be(e) Nice".

I assumed that was probably the case, but Poe's Law and all.

Transgender Reps Zooey Zephyr and SJ Howell delivered powerful speeches on the Montana House floor on Thursday. Republicans defected en masse to join them in voting against anti-trans bills.

This article felt like a little spot of light among all the bleak news recent, so I thought I would share.

If you can't tell the difference between being upset that a game was made badly and being cruel to the developers, you may need to take a step back.

Sorry, I just realized that you might take that as directed at you. I realize that sometimes the NYT is the best or only source for news, I've just been very frustrated with the NYT, especially when it comes to stuff like this.

This is a bad headline and it lends credence to the GOP framing that Trump and Elon are "cutting waste" and "saving money". Musk didn't "save" 8 billion OR 8 million dollars, he illegally halted payment for 8 million dollars worth of government services. Whether those services were wasteful or not has not been examined at all, as evidenced by these absolute clowns accidentally firing critical government workers who oversee things like nuclear arms and monitoring avian influenza. Multiple times these people have admitted to accidentally firing people when they had no idea what those people were doing and how the firings would affect citizens. We can not roll over and allow them to frame this the way they want to.

Yeah, a good bit of the article is dedicated to pointing out that there are a whole swathe of public "intellectuals" who describe themselves as Liberals but are shallow and regressive in their actual ideas.

[email protected], Community Culture, and Moderation
Hey Beeple and visitors to Beehaw: I think we need to have a discussion about [email protected], community culture, and moderation. First, some of the reasons that I think we need to have this conversation.
- Technology got big fast and has stayed Beehaw's most active community.
- Technology gets more reports (about double in the last month by a rough hand count) than the next highest community that I moderate (Politics, and this is during election season in a month that involved a disastrous debate, an assassination attempt on a candidate, and a major party's presumptive nominee dropping out of the race)
- For a long time, I and other mods have felt that Technology at times isn’t living up to the Beehaw ethos. More often than I like I see comments in this community where users are being abusive or insulting toward one another, often without any provocation other than the perception that the other user’s opinion is wrong.
Because of these reasons, we have decided tha

Harris picks Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz as her running mate, AP sources say

Vice President Kamala Harris has picked Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz to be her running mate. Three people familiar with the decision confirmed the pick to The Associated Press on Tuesday.

One word to break the fascist fever. One word to deflate the power Trump and his cronies think they have.

I've seen a lot of ink spilled recently over the Harris campaign's recent adoption of the tactic of calling Trump and his cronies "weird". There's a lot of hand-wringing over the Democrats ceding the high ground or being unserious about serious matters, but this article, and especially the source material it links to by Sdrja Popovic (a non-violent Serbian revolutionary during the Milošević regime) about the power of humor in non-violent movements, really changed my thinking on this.

This album dropped a few weeks ago and I've been listening on repeat. It's a weird mix of genres but every song is a banger IMO.
There are some slightly annoying - if brief - ads for the artist's merch store between each song, so if you'd prefer an uninterrupted listening experience you can find the album on Spotify or other streaming platforms, I assume.

Doxxing and callouts on Beehaw politics
Hey folks. I just want to check in with the community about a post that was recently removed. My intention is absolutely not to create drama or stir anything up, but I'd like to make sure you all understand my reasoning for removing the post. Also, I'm aware that I'm not as good at articulating these kinds of things as some of our folks, so don't expect a classic Beehaw philosophy post here.
The post in questions was a link to a twitter thread providing evidence of the IRL identity of "comic" "artist" stonetoss, who is unquestionably a huge piece of shit and a neo-nazi, or at least something so indistinguishable from one that the difference is meaningless.
The post provoked some discussion in the Mod chat and several of us, myself included, were on the fence about it. I understand that there are arguments both for and against naming and calling out people like stonetoss. I find arguments in both directions somewhat convincing, but ultimately the thing that a number of us expressed wa

General Megathread for Elon Musk Nonsense and Twitter News
Hey folks -
The seemingly never-ending flood of Musk/Twitter news and commentary is getting to some of our users (and some of the mods, too), so we've decided to create a general Megathread for all things related to Elon Musk and X/Twitter.
This thread will be a general Musk catch-all, so we're including news about Musk acting the fool as related to any of his companies (SpaceX, Tesla, Boring). News about those companies that don't involve Elon can be posted outside this thread.

Setup for my first game of Star Wars Legions

A friend recently brought over his Legions minis that he's been working on and we played a skirmish match.
The image linked is the setup from some time mid-game.
The matchup was Republic Clone Troopers (him) vs. CIS Droid Troopers (me). The Droids took it in the end, mostly due to General Grievous being an absolute truck.
I found the game a lot of fun to play. We've played a bunch of Fantasy Flight's games - Runewars, X-wing, and Imperial Assault among them - and I'm starting to recognize a lot of common mechanics among their games. This was was relatively snappy and I enjoyed the command/activation mechanic.
Minis and terrain were painted by my friend, who is a much better painter than me, lol. I was really blown away by the ship in the center of the play area, which he kitbashed from this Zurg Mothership toy from the Lightyear movie:

Why It's Rude to Suck at Warcraft

I'm honestly not sure how to summarize this video. It's a very interesting look at the way that the impulse to "optimize" gameplay affects the culture surrounding games, especially MMOs and other multiplayer games. It particularly looks at World of Warcraft and the social norms that have developed around and within the game. It's a long watch but I found it really interesting, and I have zero connection to WoW and have never played it.
