I don't think it's you being paranoid, however at the same time your husband is perhaps more on the front line of things, so should have a better idea.
I would say that as a journeyman lineman he'll be pretty decently qualified and probably wouldn't have as hard a time finding work abroad. It might be a tough sell with lower salaries on paper, but you often find that the standard of living improves and makes it more than worthwhile.
The koala thing is slightly different, at birth they can't digest eucalyptus leaves. The necessary gut bacteria is passed down from mother to child through coprophagy.
Bunnies and guinea pigs just eat their poop to ensure complete digestion.
Fun fact: at birth koalas can't actually digest eucalyptus leaves on their own. They eat their mum's faeces to gain the necessary gut bacteria.
I mean it was a precarious case that was on the verge of being acceptable to most people, but legally was clearly not. Scanning books and providing a single digital copy was legally grey, but everyone looked the other way. Providing extra copies during a pandemic was kind, but allowing it to go to court and not settling (and then doubling down with appeals, all of which has to be funded by donations that could have been spent elsewhere) ended up with a judge ruling that no one can scan books and publish a single copy without an explicit license from the publisher. So that grey area is now black and white.
I can't help but resent them for this, given that the main part of the organisation - the actual Internet Archive - is so important and they've put its survial at risk with their side hussle. Some of the blame (perhaps even a majority?) should also go to the lawyers that represented IA.
Starlink literally has direct to cell capability. Their orbits are around 300-600km, and this is well within reach for two way communication for cellphones as there's nothing in the way (no trees, no buildings, just space). GPS satellites are one-way, because they're at geostationary orbit of 35,786km. GPS antennae are powerful enough to shout at your phone, but your phone isn't powerful enough to shout back; with Starshield's orbit your phone can.
Starlink has deals with T-Mobile in the US and others across the world to provide cellphone coverage. They have a webpage for it and the concept is proven. https://www.starlink.com/business/direct-to-cell
The point I'm making is that this turns Starlink into global cellphone towers, existing extrajudicially to almost all the countries they effectively operate in. Furthermore, as they move (and quite quickly at that) it becomes easy for them to take multiple measurements from different locations over time, allowing them to get high accuracy location information even if only one or two satellites are nearby (with cell towers you would need at least 3 as they're at a fixed location). And on top of that the two-way communication to devices creates an avenue for exploits - maybe not all of those available to a Stingray device (which is much closer and potentially overpowers and blocks ground based cell towers) but certainly a potential for things that I find concerning.
They currently have a couple hundred direct to cell satellites out of the total constellation of 6,-8,000 satellites. However this may just be the number of satellites allocated to the commercial product; having watched most of the Falcon 9 Starlink launches I had the impression there were more direct to cell ones up there. This number also doesn't include the Starshield satellites in the constellation, which are owned by the US Space Force and have classified capabilities.
The IA is already marked for death and has been ever since they doubled down after blatantly infringing copyright with scanned books during the pandemic. IRC the full penalties of that haven't been felt yet, and I think they are likely to bankrupt the ogranisation.
What IA needs to do is spin off the actual Internet Archive element to another organisation, outside of the US like you say, such that an essential part of the internet isn't taken down with the organisation.
Could be? It absolutely is off topic.
That's to say nothing of the global mass tracking of cellphones via Starlink satellites...
I'm just awaiting the government investing all these "savings" and the money raised through tariffs into an obvious crypto scam, which then fails spectacularly and predictably and all the US taxpayer money conveniently disappears into the pockets of those running the scam (which totally won't involve Elon Musk).
Definitely not the people of American Samoa.
Edit: It's interesting that RFK Jr is now only briefly mentioned in the body of that article, but several of the source links at the bottom explicitly reference him in their titles.
Well yeah, 90% of the market is overpriced crap - that's not unique to boardgames, although like you say it's understandble how when the material cost can be low. But there are some game makers that do really make the effort, and in particular when I looked up what Scythe is and all the pieces it comes with I feel it's probably not too unreasonable to ask a higher retail price (although I saw them available for much less also).
People are already boycotting American things on their own, it doesn't make sense to punish them. If anything, that's more likely to backfire and make that government look bad towards its people.
The only way tariffs work is if the revenue collected from them is used to do something for the country setting them. America isn't doing that, America is being stupid. Trump is going to rinse America dry and all the tariff money American taxpayers paid will be gone (probably by the government investing in a classic and obvious crypto scam meme coin).
Other countries shouldn't be stupid like America, they should only apply tariffs with a plan to re-invest the revenue back into their country. If they even need to apply tariffs at all; I'd argue not.
The point I'm making is that retaliatory tariffs don't make Americans suffer, let alone the American government. They maybe mean some American businesses make a little bit less money, but that's it. What tariffs really do is make that country's people suffer.
The American government is already making Americans suffer with American tariffs. It makes no sense for other countries to make their own people suffer with their own tariffs.
Ultimately, tariffs are a tax; they take money from the people and put it in the government's pocket. I wouldn't want my governmet taking more of my money, not at least without some plan for what it's going to be spent on (and those plans being in my or the country's interest).
If America wants to tax Americans for buying overseas then that's their problem, and it doesn't mean that Europe or other countries should start taxing their own citizens.
I just want to add something right here:
Retirement was pushed to the age of 64 under his name
Macron did this unilaterally by twisting an emergency constitutional power so that he could bypass a vote from the Assembly/Senate.
You're only considering material cost, not time cost of employing someone to operate the machines. Also your system is not really scalable - it would take a long time per unit, making the labour cost even more significant per unit. There's also R&D, distribution, marketing, etc. all before any profit is made. Also, as you mention, the quality of 3D printed pieces would be much poorer.
This is why it's ridiculous that media in other countries are criticising their politicians for not responding harshly to Trump's tariffs with tariffs of their own.
When America applies tariffs on imports it's Americans who pay them. It affects foreign business slightly, in the form of reduced sales, but the real victims are Americans. When other countries apply tariffs, the main victims are their citizens.
The correct response to someone punching themselves in the face is not to punch yourself in the face.
Maybe it isn't, but I just find it hard to believe the obsession with Merrivius on r/comics is completely natural.
The artist is Merrivius https://www.webtoons.com/en/canvas/elf-comic/list?title_no=983708
Elf girl is bottom left, the artist begins with M. Their comics are really popular on r/comics.
Edit: The artist is called Merrivius https://www.webtoons.com/en/canvas/elf-comic/list?title_no=983708
Shots fired lmao I bet this tanked on reddit, they're obsessed with their elf girl (and that totally isn't astroturfed).
It seems like YouTube have changed their link tracking to include more information
Up until like a year or two ago, YouTube links always used to be pretty clean. The format was youtube .com/watch?v=[video_ID]
. A year or two ago, they started adding a tracking suffix on, so it would be youtube .com/watch?v=[video_ID] &si=[tracking_ID]
.
Over the last day or so, I've noticed links with a different format, youtube .com/watch?v=[video_ID]&pp=[tracking_ID]
- only the pp= string is much longer than the si= string. This can only be because they're including more information in it. What that information is is anyone's guess.
This is basically a PSA to watch YouTube links more carefully, as people are by and large complacent with them (moreso than other links) and never even realised the si= change, let alone this new pp= change.
It could also be that the change to pp= is meant to circumvent communities, like this one, which automatically filter out the si= suffix. They may have decided to address that, then took the opportunity to make their tracking more severe.
Finally giving up on Jerboa
I've had enough of the text editing issue, where when you press backspace it highlights the space before the word and ends up deleting it. The developer passes off responsibility for this to the engine they use and seems to have no intention of addressing it.
What are the pros and cons of the other Android apps? I'm only considering ones on F-Droid, not the Play Store, so that rules out Summit and Boost. Ones I have available are:

CD Projekt Red are splitting from GOG somehow?
Just had the following email from GOG about account migration for CD Projekt Red games, not quite sure what to make of it. Don't CDPR own GOG? Why do they need to be separated? What does this mean for the long term future of the services?
MIGRATION OF CD PROJEKT RED ONLINE SERVICES
Dear [user],
You are receiving this email due to your use of online features, including Cross Progression and My Rewards, in CD PROJEKT RED games, as well as your participation in platforms like the CD PROJEKT RED Forums. We are migrating these products to a new account system, owned and operated by CD PROJEKT S.A., effective from March 5th, 2024. This consolidation will involve the transfer of governance of your personal data, including your email address and username, from the GOG account system to the CD PROJEKT RED account system.
What does this change?
Starting March 5th, 2024, the above mentioned online features and services will be available through a new CD PROJEKT RED account system.

So I finally did the math on data brokerage and worked out how much we're all being robbed
I know this isn't strictly piracy related, I apologise, but I think it is tangentally related in that piracy protects you from data theft by avoiding the services the biggest thieves operate. Also, I feel like people here might be very interested in this take.
Apparently, the "legal" data brokerage industry was worth $319 billion in 2021, and is predicted to be worth $545 billion in 2028.[^1]
Meanwhile, in 2021 there were only 7.9 billion people in the world[^2] - many of whom do not have internet access or have very little data being traded. If we generously assume 6 billion people have equal volumes of data being traded, that means each person's data is worth $53.17 per year on the market.
Data is effectively stolen from people. We do not get anything in return for it. We may be offered access to a website free of charge, but that is a separate transaction - it is not appropriate for another transaction to be hidden in the fine print of the terms and conditions. When you buy
TIL there is an auto-expand media setting!!
When did this happen?! It makes me so happy!
It's still not quite as good as old reddit with RES was, where you started with everything normal and then clicked a button to expand (or contract) media. Being able to contract everything is almost as useful, particularly if you want to scroll further down. However it's still a great improvement, as well as proof that lemmy just keeps getting better.

No room for nuance
Rule 1: No bigotry - including racism, sexism, ableism, homophobia, transphobia, or xenophobia.
I'm struggling here. Xenophobia? But they clearly do not support either side.
Rule 1 and 2, the ultimate catchall
If you use both as justification, you don't have to worry about different communities having them the other way around. It gets real fun when a community has the rules one way, but the instance sets them the other way.
Rule 1: No bigotry - including racism, sexism, ableism, homophobia, transphobia, or xenophobia.
Rule 2: Be respectful, especially when disagreeing. Everyone should feel welcome here.
Meanwhile, replying to the commenter with "My little cyκa" (bitch) received no moderation.
Frankly, moderators should be more detailed in their reports, and clearly specify which rules they are acting under.
The Removed Comment entries should also specify which community they were removed from, just like the bans. This would further clarify the set of rules being moderated under. You can determine this by viewing a community modlog, but not when viewing the modlog overall (although I'm sure the core database has this functionality).
However the user here definitely deserved mo

Defamation Lawsuit Against Afroman Filed by Ohio Cops Will Partially Proceed

A judge tossed two of the claims against Afroman, finding that "the issue appears to be the humiliation and outrage that the officers feel at having their likenesses displayed and mocked."
The rapper Afroman will have to continue to defend himself against a defamation lawsuit filed by Ohio sheriff's deputies who raided his house after a judge allowed some of the deputies' claims to proceed.
In a ruling last week, an Ohio county judge dismissed two of the deputies' claims against Afroman, best known for his 2000 hit "Because I Got High," finding that the rapper's commentary was protected artistic speech. However, the judge allowed three other claims to proceed, finding that it was not outside the realm of possibility that the deputies could prove they were entitled to relief.
The Adams County Sheriff's Office (ACSO) executed a search warrant on Afroman's house last August on suspicion of drug possession, drug trafficking, and kidnapping. As Reason reported in June, the deputies
Bugged comment - federated but not hosted locally
https://lemm.ee/comment/3432900
I made this comment yesterday, however it doesn't show up in my profile nor on lemm.ee - all I can see is replies to the comment from my notifications, but not the comment tree in the post and all 3 replies have the same url to the same non-existent parent comment. When I browse the full comments none of them show up. It also appears on some federated instances, but not others - it's there on kbin, but not on lemmy.world or dbzer0 - yet somehow I have replies from all 3.

Context links don't work
I think since the 0.18.3 update, the Context links in comments aren't working for me. On the website, it does nothing. On Jerboa, it loads something, but it misses off the top of the comment tree, and doesn't let me click it again to go further up the tree.
The previous version made you click Context multiple times to work your way up the tree, and as you went higher the comment you were looking at might end up further down the tree (branches would be displayed based on your sorting order, rather than the specific context chain). However despite its flaws it was far more functional than this.
A proposal for instance agnostic post and comment links
Maybe this post would be more at home on a lemmy.ml community, or on github, but this place is my home and I feel like I'd like to get opinions here first :o)
Right now, there is no way to make an instance agnostic link for a post or comment, like you can do with users or communities. Each instance assigns its own number to posts and comments, and there isn't really an easy way to find a post or comment on one instance when starting from another.
For example, if I get a lemmy.world link to a post in a lemmy.world community, in order for me to comment from lemm.ee I would first have to go to lemm.ee/c/community@lemmy.world, then find the post in there manually. If I want to reply to a specific comment, I would have to find the post on lemm.ee in this way, then also search that thread for the comment. If you're looking for an old post with a lot of comments, this can be quite challenging.
Instead, I think lemmy needs to revise how it numbers comments and posts, using the same system
Can't reply to kbin.social comments
I frequently find this, for some reason kbin.social comments aren't federating properly. When they reply to my comment thread I am unable to reply to them, and when I log into kbin.social directly and post there my comment doesn't show up on lemm.ee for some time at all.
Edit: A good fix is to apply a language to your comment, eg English. This should allow your comment to post. However it seems like there is still some issue with comments federating across after that - your comment might appear on kbin, but you might not get their replies again.
Getting a few errors on page loads
I've had a few errors loading pages in new tabs. Unfortunately I've been hitting refresh before screenshotting most, however this is one of them.
The link that failed to load: https://lemm.ee/post/482750?scrollToComments=true Although, it loaded immediately with one refresh.
I've also had a few Cloudfire 503 error pages across various tabs. Again, these loaded immediately with a single refresh.
There was one other issue I noticed, I tried replying to a kbin.social user on a lemmy.world thread, and the reply wouldn't post. The comment I was replying to was less than 10 min old. The circle would just keep spinning, but also I noted that it didn't give me the "leave this page?" popup when I tried to refresh. I tried many times over, then gave up and just replied with my own kbin.social account. Edit: The thread I can't comment on: https://lemm.ee/post/499275?scrollToComments=true
Edit2: Another lemmy.world thread I can't comment on: https://lemm.ee/post/501214
