  • I really loved my Razr as well. It was the best compromise between usability and pocketability. I plan on using this mini until the wheels fall off so when the next time I get a new phone it ought to be much more durable than the first gen.

  • I agree that discussing the kids would come down to “where are the parents?” Or “this is what’s wrong with society” and that’s not productive or worth discussion.

Mainly I was just providing an example of a negative reaction the movie is getting that the director might care about. No right answer you have to provide to me to make me happy

  • My local theatre had a group of teenagers throw popcorn and drinks at the meme’d scenes and basically destroyed the theatre for a TikTok moment.

They are ruining the experience for the kids that actually want to watch the movie. If all this stupid viral moment was people shouting “chicken jockey” I’d be indifferent but it’s way beyond this

  • A lot of static site blog generators use markdown to create posts. Lemmy also uses markdown for its’ post formatting. From my understanding what OP has done is that he made this post on Lenmy and has created a front end that basically retrieves the given post from Lemmy and displays it with a more traditional blog style CSS as well as a few other pages that aren’t hosted on Lemmy.

  • The principles of operation of the fediverse are actually very aligned with the “small government, personal freedom, free speech” ethos that conservatives in the US claim to have.

The culture on most fedi spaces is hostile towards anything less than luxury gay space communism politically but it’s pretty easy to ignore because the power structure of the fediverse is ideal and makes it so you filter out the very worst of the tankies if you so choose.

Now if you are a fascist who is only concerned about dominating others opinions and rights, and only care about freeze peach and not freedom of association and expression I can see how you might find the fediverse objectionable.

The fedi needs more voices from all sides, it does not need fascists.

  • That’s the concept of voting with your wallet and that’s something we should do more of. Neither way is correct, but if enough people were to vote with their wallet, we could have “quiet please” and “audience participation encouraged” niches being filled by smaller theater operators instead of soulless corporate owned megaplexes.

  • I wouldn’t expect a children’s movie to be silent because kids are still learning how to act in public. The Minecraft movie is not one that would care that much about.

I also don’t think a movie theater is the place for audience interaction, a live show for certain kinds of entertainers or certain sporting events are a more appropriate venue for that.

Not that your preferences in theatre energy are wrong but I don’t agree that you ought to get to be loud because my enjoyment is not more important than yours. Some people get enjoyment out of teasing or trolling others. If your enjoyment is negatively impacting my enjoyment then it’s not acceptable in my opinion. That’s the social contracts. You can still enjoy a movie without being disruptive. Or you can be disruptive as much as you want in a private showing.

  • Movie theaters rely on an intact social contract for them to work. These movies aren’t filmed in front of a live studio audience, the actors can’t pause to wait for audience reactions. If I spend $20 for a ticket for a single viewing and miss a line because of people talking, being on their phone, air otherwise acting a fool. I’d be upset, I’m sure plenty of people are asking for their money back because of disruptions during the showing. If a theater becomes known for disruptions then they will lose customers and go out of business.

  • I mean it points and clicks. The one major thing it needs to do. It pairs easily and works perfectly over low latency Bluetooth. Which is something you can’t say about every Bluetooth mouse or other wireless mice that use a 2.4Ghz dongle.

Yeah there are better mice for the money but you can buy the Magic Mouse and know it’s going to work, despite it being designed for style over function.

  • If you aren’t having fun there is no shame in that. I feel the same way about Sun and Moon.

I am sure that there is a lot those games do right, like the island challenge instead of gyms and a different kind of elite 4 and other things but the early game is so boring that I don’t care to get that far.

  • I hate to tell you that you gave up too early but most of the good things about emerald happen after the 5th gym when you get surf (the expanded story from ruby and sapphire, the battle frontier, improved gym leader teams and rematches, etc)

Gen 3 has so many trainers so you shouldn’t be underleveled with probably the only exception being the 5th gym. The only trainers between the 4th gym and the 5th are 5 or so in the desert and the gym trainers. The gym leader also uses 3 fully evolved pokemon. If you don’t have a strong super effective move (which is likely) then that fight will be a challenge.

The rest of the game I don’t think is that hard, the 7th gym is probably the next difficulty spike but I won’t tell you.

Some pokemon are also just not good and so you probably shouldn’t bother using them. It’s not like in later games where even if a pokemon is weak you can use the power of friendship and drugs to power boost it until it can fight anyway.

Best Beige PS/2 keyboard and mouse for retro gaming build?

I’m looking for a mouse and keyboard that will work for my retro 98SE build while also being acceptable for playing on my windows 11 pc that’s connected via KVM at the same desk.

Requirement is for it to use PS/2 so I don’t have to connect another input device because the USB driver decided not to load on 98.

I’ve been trying to google for information but not getting a lot of good answers. Thanks in advance for your advice folks

My review of Half-Life in 2025

    www.kmstrube.net KMSTRUBE.NET - Review: Half-Life

Act 0: Black Mesa Inbound When I was 5 years old, my family got our first home computer. The year was 1997. The computer was a Sony VAIO. I didn’t have a clue what a computer was at the time. When Dad booted up the computer that first time, I heard the Windows 95 boot up chimes, I saw the intro

    KMSTRUBE.NET - Review: Half-Life

My latest blog post is my review of the first Half-Life game. I decided to break the review up into acts as I feel each act of the game has its own focus on different aspects of game design.

Act 1 being setting, characters, and story. Act 2 being sound, gunplay, and combat. And Act 3 being gameplay.

    Act 1 (Story)- 4 ☢️s out 5

    Act 2 (Combat)- 5 ☢️s out of 5

    Act 3 (Gameplay)- 3 ☢️s out 5

    Overall-4 ☢️s out of 5

Friendly Tip: Replace your degraded battery!

This may be somewhat obvious advice but it makes a huge difference. If your iPhone says the battery is degraded (under 80% battery health) then take it to a repair center and replace the battery. Even if your phone says it’s at “Peak Performance” despite the battery health.

For context, my iPhone 13 mini (purchased at launch in 2021) was at 74% battery health and the battery menu said it was degraded and to seek service despite also saying “Peak Performance Capability”. I could tell because my phone would become hotter than the surface of the sun if I used it for more than 10 minutes. It would also become so slow if trying to use the internet as it struggled to load all the JavaScript and ads and such when loading websites.

I decided to get the battery replaced at the Apple Store (and they decided to replace the screen as well for no additional charge) for a total of $89 before tax. It runs like it is brand new and I could totally see me getting another 3 years out of it.

    If anyone

    Afterplay.io now has retroachievements support!

Afterplay.io is a web-based retro gaming emulator with support for SNES, GB, GBC and GBA (Premium includes support for even more consoles including N64, PS1, and DS).

The latest update just added retroacheivements support. As far as I know, it’s the only emulator that supports them on iOS that doesn’t require sideloading.

Best iOS for creating gifs from mp4s/videos from camera roll?

I’m looking for a recommendation for making gifs on iOS. Preferably one that lets you add text and with the option to remove the watermark with a one time purchase instead of a subscription.

Does this community have any advice? I tried a bunch on the App Store but there’s literally dozens and most of them either don’t let you add text or have like a $20 a minute subscription or obnoxious ads with no option to remove

Google is killing Retro Dodo and Other Independent Sites

I know that the source is more focused on retro gaming as a topic but the topic of this post is Google and its pagerank algorithm which is more appropriate for this community.

We’ve all noticed the enshittification of Google Search over the last few months, but it’s still hard to hear how it is affecting content creators and putting them out of business so we can see 20 AI generated spam pages about whatever our query is.

    Another Zelda game down!

I conquered Koholint island finally! I really enjoyed my time playing Link’s Awakening. I can’t believe they fit a whole Legend of Zelda game on Gameboy! I really enjoyed it

I ended up getting stuck trying to get the bird key. I could not figure out how to get the flying rooster. I tried bombing the weather cock, lifting the weather cock, pulling, using the hook shot, using the magic rod, digging every tile in mabe village, getting the boomerang, giving back the boomerang, tried every key item I could think of. I ended up beating level 8 before level 7. I even made this map of the entire game in google sheets to try to figure it out.

Oh well, I don’t count it as time waste. If anything else it was a great excuse to keep playing. I’ve never played a 3D Zelda before so I am looking forward to OoT

How I hosted my blog on Google Sites

www.kmstrube.net KMSTRUBE.NET - How I hosted my blog on Google Sites

I've always been something of a tinkerer. In high school and college, it was messing around with the game files of Call of Duty and Call of Duty: United Offensive to create multiplayer mods for myself and my friends. This might sound hard to believe, but in the late 00s and early 10s; Stack

KMSTRUBE.NET - How I hosted my blog on Google Sites

I hope a little self promotion is ok. Thanks to all of your help a few weeks ago, I was able to get an RSS feed set up for my blog. For reasons I still don't fully understand, a year and a half ago, when I moved my personal website from github and Azure App Services to Google Sites; I decided to just hack Google Sites into a blog rather than do the logical thing and start a blog on Wordpress or Blogger.

As I was documenting the process of hosting a feed using Google Drive and automating it with Google Apps Script, I decided to turn it into a full blog post on the journey I took to get things working.

If you do have some morbid curiosity on the actual steps to take to host, automate, and update RSS using Google Apps, I do have a full guide with instructions but can't say I recommend doing things this way to anyone but the truly delusional.

The whole post is about a 20 minute read. D

How to set up RSS for my blog?

I've never dealt with RSS before on a personal level. I've pretty much always used social media to discover blog posts. I'm wanting to set up RSS for my personal blog but since I have no experience, looking for some guidance for best practices. I'm currently setting up a script to automatically update the xml when I publish new posts.

Am I supposed to include the entire post in the description field? Or just a summary? How do I handle the markup and formatting of the post?

Am I supposed to delete items from the feed or do I just keep appending items to the bottom of it?

Its it good practice to include a thumbnail image or anything with the item in the feed? How is that possible.

How do I distribute the feed beyond adding a button on my site?

Thank you in advance to anyone for their advice.

Apple releases new "Apple Sports" app

The app is available in the US now. It links to appropriate Apple News articles, Streaming services, has scoreboards and more.

Makes me curious if we see Apple lean more into live sports for their Apple TV+ packages, especially with the NBA contract coming up to match their current MLS and MLB offerings

Played and beat A Link to the Past for the first time!

As a big Zelda hater as a kid, I skipped the series completely. I’ve been going through to experience them all in order now. I really enjoyed the first two games of the series so I expected to like this one too. What I didn’t expect is was that it really is one of the best games on the Super Nintendo if not one of the best games of all-time.

    AppleTV+ 2024 Reccomendations?

We recently subscribed to AppleTV+ (you get a pretty decent trial from just download the app on a playstation by the way). And are looking for exclusives to watch on the service. Of course everyone recommends Ted Lasso and we have started that. My wife, has already watched through "The Morning Show" and liked it.

Especially looking for good movie suggestions as those don't require as much of a time investment for me.
