Uh what?

  • Seems pretty self-explanatory to me...

  • Maybe it's pedantic to point this out, but I seriously doubt anything humans can do would be able to wipe out all life on Earth, and I include nuclear weapons in that. Microbes can live in some crazy environments, and it only takes one surviving for life to persist and evolve into new species.

Human beings, on the other hand, and especially human civilization as we know it, well...

  • Great show. Anyone know when they're going to finally do that movie to cap off the series? Or is it already out and I just didn't find out because I cancelled Netflix?

  • Bleak. Grim. Dystopian. Nightmarish. I'm running out of adjectives for this shit, and we're not even 3 months in...

  • Cradle by Will Wight is both really good and a lot of fun to read, in my opinion. In a similar genre, Beware of Chicken by "Casualfarmer" is very enjoyable as well.

Also, a little darker, especially in setting, but somehow not a depressing story in spite of that, Naomi Novik's Scholomance trilogy is also excellent.

  • Not familiar with this new terminology; I usually just call them "pigs" to avoid confusion, but I suppose calling cops "rats" does make sense. You don't usually see mainstream British newspapers introducing new slang terms like that, but hey, stranger things have happened, right?

Reposting TheaJo's thread: (EMERGENCY) Update on my situation (still need money ASAP for rent/necessities)

TheaJo is a longtime member of this community, since just about the very beginning of the site, at which point she was unhoused IIRC. But she was able to secure housing and has been able to maintain it for multiple years. Now, though, she's at risk of losing that, so please help her avoid ending up back at square 1.

    Thanks.

  • I started listening to Chapo and hanging out on r/CTH back in 2018. It took literal years of chipping away at Western media narratives to push my family left.

Honestly one of the bigger things was introducing Means Morning News (it's a 4-day-a-week news program offerered by the leftist co-op subscription service Means.tv, which costs $10/mo, but the Friday show is posted free most weeks) and getting them to watch it regularly, but it took a lot of pointing out the BS in Western media to get to that point. As I'm sure you know, the slant of Western media is very obvious once you're aware of it, but your family, like most people, has been very effectively trained not to see it, and it will take time to break through that.

  • Apparently someone who drives an off-road-capable vehicle exclusively on-road.

  • The real trick is coasting to a stop in an open lane next to the person in a hurry; then if the light turns green, you're still moving and you can zoom right by them, which is incredibly satisfying.

  • It's not "both sides" to accept the reality of the situation.

This is you, 42 minutes ago:

    both sides are terrorists

Anyway, I'm done. Enjoy being a stooge for genocidal powers you say you don't support. If this were a post on my home instance I'd be a lot more rude right now; as it is, all I'll say is that this experience, for me, is best encapsulated in this emote:

  • Why would I need to check your history? You're both-sides-ing a settler-colonialist genocide here. Hamas's goal is fighting off the Zionist entity, not genocide, and your acceptance of that horseshit claim makes clear that you believe anything the Western media tells you, hence your appeal to the authority of "experts" (all of whom are doubtless employed by, or at minimum enthusiastically on the side of, Western media companies or militaries) on this particular claim, rather than any independent thought.

PS: Since you're so dependent on "experts," here's some that argue the opposing side: https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2023/10/19/what-hit-ahli-hospital-in-gaza https://www.channel4.com/news/who-was-behind-the-gaza-hospital-blast-visual-investigation

  • No one who believes the (absurd and obviously false, in this case) lies of genocidal monsters is on the side of the Palestinians, full stop, especially if you think it's wrong for Hamas to use violence against the oppressors.

PS: I love how you're more ready to be skeptical of Palestinians claims about number of deaths than you are of Israeli claims of innocence.

  • lmao an R160 managed to kill 500 people when one has literally never managed to even kill 10 before? Come on. You're not even subjecting these claims to basic common sense.

PS: It was likely an antipersonnel munition, and it burst in the air; the tiles are irrelevant, you credulous fool.

  • lmao kindly name the type of military hardware Hamas has that could have caused that explosion. I'll wait.

  • Permanently Deleted

  • So what to expect now?

lol who knows? Maybe they'll get their act together and pick a Speaker next week like they say they will, or maybe it'll take weeks to pick one. There are fewer than six weeks remaining before the government shuts down again, though.

Except that some of the Republicans want the government to shut down, because they couldn't manage to pass anything to cut funding from the myriad programs they want to cut (mainly domestic welfare-style spending; Republicans definitely do not want to cut military funding except to Ukraine specifically, and only some of them oppose the Ukraine funding anyway). And while we're talking about the pro-shutdown Republicans:

But why was he got deposed?

He was deposed because he got the bill passed at the last minute to fund the government for another 45 days, and didn't let the government shut down instead. He had already upset the pro-shutdown faction by going along with Dems to raise the debt ceiling recently, and this latest offense was apparently more than the pro-shutdowners were willing to take. Meanwhile Dems decided not to rescue McCarthy's Speakership, given that they haven't gotten any political concessions from McCarthy or Republicans in this latest fight at all, so as a result, a handful of hardline Republican House reps were able to oust McCarthy. And now anyone who wants to be speaker will need votes from that same faction to get in.
