  • Because they're too stupid to follow along and understand everyday politics, so this level of insanity seems like 3D chess to them.

  • He reminds me of an oranda goldfish.

  • The water just dilutes back into the rest of the ocean, lowering its average carbon content a minuscule amount. It'll take a year or less for it to reabsorb as much atmospheric CO2 as was removed and for any carbon compounds altered by the pH changes to revert. It'll likely hit peak CO2 before that point. This isn't a big deal unless it's done at massive scale in concentrated areas.

An "easy" way to handle this is to return the water to the deep ocean, where it's less impactful to ocean life and has a much larger area in which to dilute.

  • It's gasuous CO2. The process pulls in water, acidifies it to release carbon as CO2 to air in a sealed space, pumps that water to the next phase which adjusts the pH back up to normal, then the carbon poor water is pumped back into the ocean.

Meanwhile, the CO2 in the previously mentioned sealed space is concentrated up to about 98%, but it's still a gas. While this may or may not be a more efficient extraction system, it still has the same issue all extraction systems face: what to do with the extracted gas.

Here's their proposal with the details.

  • Or this guy?

  • 100%. I still enjoy reading Asimov and Heinlein despite them being bigots. I just don't support the behavior and call it out for being bad when I see it.

  • I'm not going to lie: it's a pain in the ass to diagnose and treat because it manifests differently between people. Even the lab tests aren't reliable. I was diagnosed due to the fact the treatments (antihistamines and mast cell stabilizers) improved my CFS, EDS, brain fog, dysautonomia, "fun" GI issues, and anaphylactoid episodes.

My issues are certain foods and stress. If I consume too much alcohol, wheat or sugar, if I stop eating dairy then start again, and/or I experience extended bouts of intense physical and/or psychological stress, my EDS pain increases, blood flow to my extremities decreases (cold hands and feet like crazy), my GI tract goes haywire, I feel cold constantly even when I'm truly hot, I'll develop rashes and eczema, and I'll start experiencing CFS and random bouts of brain fog. If it goes on long enough or intensely for a short time (e.g., I eat an entire cake), I'll have anaphylactoid episodes - not full anaphylaxis, but a lesser version that feels like a random, intense panic attack with no trigger. I was actually "diagnosed" with a panic disorder early on. Xanax just made me feel calmer while my body kept freaking out.

I first was clued into it because I noticed my symptoms were better when I took cetirizine, an antihistamine, and intensified when I stopped. My doctor had me try cromolyn sodium and, a few weeks later, my GI symptoms had vastly improved and the remaining symptoms were better. We've since tacked on a few more meds and I underwent a lot of therapy to get my stress levels down. Now I'm stable, where before I could barely function at work or at home.

  • You can also track aggregate up and down votes per user! You're a solid +13 for me, you're cool.

  • Have you looked into mast cell activation disorder/syndrome (MCAD/MCAS) at all? I also have EDS (hypermobile type, hEDS) plus MCAS, which is a common comorbidity. I don't have POTS, luckily. Tackling MCAS issues was what got rid of my brain fog and CFS, as well as vastly improving my EDS issues. I'm actually reversing my joint hypermobility and I'm mentally sharper than I've been in decades. It's wild.

I'm full of info if you have any questions. Us chronic pain, incurable types gotta stick together.

  • I felt my blood pressure spiking from just reading this. I'm glad you were okay!

  • You make a great point, I completely agree. While the Orange Bumblefuck absolutely engaged in market manipulation, profiting by acting on non-public information is at the heart of insider trading, which I'm certain his accomplices did.

  • Agreed, concision is perhaps one of the most useful skills I learned that I'm absolutely rubbish at applying.

  • I corrected my first paragraph - it's not "privileged information" as information on illegal activities isn't legally protected nor legitimate business.

  • It isn't technically privileged information - that's generally understood to mean confidential information that is legally protected so that it does not have to be given to the public. What we're working with is information about the actions the manipulator is taking to illegally manipulate the market.

It's called insider trading as the trading is being informed by someone on "the inside" who knows something about (typically) legitimate business, generally for one company or an industry, the general public does not. Examples are new developments, earnings results, impending lawsuits, etc.

Edit: it's early, I bungled the first paragraph so it got a rewrite.

  • Same, my father yelled about anything that angered him, which was a lot, but never did it around friends or family. I thought all families were like this. Therapy taught me otherwise.

  • As a biologist, I'm always so happy with how versed your average Lemming is on evolution versus the bad place.

    Moderator rules rule

Hey look, me again! Just like we need community rules, we also need moderator guidelines to set expectations for our behavior. As with community rules, we want everyone to weigh in on them since this is a community for all of us. Here's what we have, let us know what you think:

    Moderator Guidelines

    • Don't be mean to users. Be gentle or neutral.
    • When in doubt about whether or not a user is problematic, send them a DM if you have the time and energy.
    • Don't waste time debating/arguing with problematic users.
    • Assume the best, but don't tolerate sealioning/just asking questions/concern trolling.
    • Ask another mod to take over cases you struggle with, or when things get personal.
    • Ask the other mods for advice when things get complicated.
    • Don't perform too much moderation in the comments, except if you want a verdict to be public or to ask people to dial a convo down/stop. Single comment warnings are okay.
    • Send users concise DMs about verdicts about them, such as bans etc, e

    Community rules rule

Hiiii everybody! We need rules to keep the place from going off the rails and your mod team would like you to give them a review and let us know what you think. We're going to implement them now as a temporary ruleset so I'll slap them into the sidebar shortly, then make amendments based on commentary. Here's what we've got:

    Community Rules

    • Be nice. Assume others have good intent (within reason).
    • Block or ignore posts, comments, and users that irritate you in some way rather than engaging. Report if they are actually breaking community rules.
    • Use content warnings and/or mark as NSFW when appropriate. Most posts with content warnings likely need to be marked NSFW.
    • Most 196 posts are memes, shitposts, cute images, or even just recent things that happened, etc. There is no real theme, but try to avoid posts that are very inflammatory, offensive, very low quality, or very "off topic".
    • Avoid AI generated content.
    • Avoid corpoposting.
    • Avoid misinformati

196ers - We need a banner and icon!

Everyone, we need to spruce the place up, so we wanted to reach out to you all for submissions for the icon and banner. Here's the idea: submit icons and banners (SFW please). I'll leave this stickied for 72 hours, then we'll pick the most popular of each by upvotes.

I couldn't find specs on icon dimensions, but it appears icons are square and tend to look best at least 256 x 256. Banners tend to be...rectangularish. Here are three banner examples: ( 1 ) ( 2 ) ( 3 )

As always, let me know if you have questions.

Looks like we started a community! Now we need feedback and mods.

I'm kinda regretting not naming it oneninesix, but here we are. I guess I love letters.

To anyone wondering what's up, I did this on my phone while out in the "big city", so I'm still waiting to get home to do anything serious. I have a few ~~suckers really nice people who volunteered for modding along with me. Anyone else who is interested, drop me a line. I'll be picking mods when I get home in a few hours. Sorry for the wait and I'll do my best to put out any fires in the meantime. I didn't think this would take off!~~

For those wondering, here's my take on moderating the place.

    1. Moderation is to facilitate an experience for its users in line with the goals of the community and the instance. It's not to push a personal agenda, give you a bigger hammer in debates, set up a digital fiefdom, etc. You certainly can and should include your mod experience on your dating profile, though. Unilateral decisions are not cool except in a few situations, like if 100% of your userbas

Help me find a video on North Korea?

Hi everyone, I know this isn't 100% on topic but this seemed like the closest fit. You all tend to be more generally knowledgeable than the average Lemming. Feel free to remove if it's too off topic.

In the last few years, I watched what I believe was a YouTube video on South Korean misinformation about North Korea. It discussed defectors, the conditioning they receive after defecting, and celebrity defectors. I recall it also interviewed some North Koreans living in South Korea.

Does anyone know the video I'm thinking of?

People who poop with the bathroom fan off

Seriously people, use the fucking fan. It clears away odors and covers up the sounds of your dropping a deuce. If you want to stew in your shit smell and revel in the music of your magical poop plops, do so in the comfort of your own home. If you're a guest and the bathroom has a fan, turn it on. We don't want to share.

Right-to-Work Laws don't mean your employer can fire you at any time for any reason (US Law)

"I live in a right-to-work state, so my employer can shitcan me for any reason".

    -Linus K. Lemming

Sorry friends, that's at-will employment, *and you still can't be terminated for any reasons that are protected by law, but we're not here to discuss that. Right-to-work laws mean one thing: that non-union employees cannot be required to contribute to the cost of union representation.

The Taft-Hartley Act of 1947 prohibits "closed shops", where union membership is a condition of employment; however, union represented positions can still be required to contribute to the cost of that representation. Right-to-work laws prohibit that requirement, allowing employees in union represented positions who choose not to join the union to also choose whether or not they contribute to the union's co

Halp! Calibrating touchscreen on Panasonic CF-30

Hey all! I've been having an issue I can't figure out. Suddenly, I realized I'm in the heart of Linux users! I can ask here! I'm a total noob, so please be gentle.

I installed Xubuntu and got everything but the touchscreen working properly. The touchscreen works but the cursor is consistently off a bit, with the least error in the center of the screen and increasing as it moves to the sides. I've tried running xinput_calibrator but it doesn't help. I attempted to run libinput.calibrate-touchscreen but keep getting a "is a Wayland compositor running?" error message.

    Any suggestions?
