  • But I don’t get cuddles, kisses, a person to go to and be with.

Reminds me of this comic. Two people are talking in a cafe, and one of them's like: "I need a boyfriend... one I can talk to, who listens to me and understands me who loves me and is always pleased to see me..." And Nemi's like: "You don't need a boyfriend. You need a dog."

  • Well if you're on the lemmy.world default web interface there should be a "Create Community" button at the top of the page. I never used it tho.

If you want to look for existing communities, check out the Lemmy Explorer. Apparently there are several existing MMA communities: https://lemmyverse.net/communities?query=martial+arts One strategy is to take over an existing community: 1) contact the listed mod, 2) if they don't answer then contact Support for that instance and ask to be made a mod. But if you end up just making your own community, then you can make posts announcing it on all those old communities.

  • Check out !fedigrow@lemmy.zip especially the "weekly thread - how is everybody doing with their communities?", it's basically people giving each other regular advice about that.

  • I watched this yesterday and it was pretty good. Had the same feel as a ST:TOS episode: an expedition discovers something unknown and has to deal with it. A "science vs security" subplot that reaches for more than it achieves, but at least it reaches. A focus on teamwork (almost to the "competence porn" level) and a somewhat cringe romantic subplot. Of note: the characters are often talking over one another, and there are simultaneous conversations on several occasions -- this is pretty rare these days. And yeah the script is tight, there's only like 60 seconds (of romance subplot) that I woulda cut. Anyway it's definitely dated, but still worth checking out.

  • Thanks for your posts, btw!

  • Well said!

I find that I often use Lemmy to point me to music, books, movies, etc. instead of just being an end in itself.

Also I find myself posting more. The fact that niche communities tend to be smaller means that I can be an important part of those communities.

  • You say that like it's a bad thing!

  • Yeah I listen to DJs on Twitch and usually only really like 1 out of every 7-8 songs I hear. Those are the ones I look up and post to !gothindustrial@lemmy.world ...

  • There are a bunch of bandcamp and youtube links here: https://lemmy.world/post/36439703

the community covers several different genres, Industrial Goth EBM Darkwave Coldwave Horror Punk Aggrotech Noise etc.

  • Being randos on the internet, spouting bullshit is actually one of our primary activities.

I disagree. This community aspires to be one of the low-bullshit places.

How about "no politics involving people still living and active"? i.e. you can discuss Nixon but not Trump.

  • yeah, my first instinct was to nuke it from orbit.

  • Hullabaloo started as an indiegogo campaign in 2014. They wanted $80,000 to make a 2d steampunk film using traditional hand-drawn animation and a bunch of ex-Disney animators. Their plan was to release this film in 2015.

80k to make a hand-drawn film in under a year? Even if all the pre-production was already done and people were basically working for free, that seems like an unrealistic deadline for anything longer than a brief clip. I mean, these guys are professionals so they musta known that... so yeah, I suspect the whole point was to garner interest and look for studio funding.

edit: the existing clip is great btw, I hope a studio comes thru for them.

  • OK, but if you get on a horse's back, are you riding, or flying?

  • !gothindustrial@lemmy.world is nearing 1000 subscriptions (980 atm). yeah I know it's not a great metric and Monthly Active Users is better, but it's still a milestone of sorts!
