I think anime can be quite good at psychological horror, but yeah visual horror not so much. Like you suggest, I do think the disconnect might simply be too much, although I feel visual novels can be pretty good at it (haven't played any, but that's what I hear).

Makes me wonder, are there any western animations that do good horror?

And Yachiyo got the "pretty voice" reward, so maybe the OP will evolve?

Hmm, I personally don't think I'd call it strongest in the past couple of years, but at least since the last 2 seasons.

I currently have quite a busy time, but I think I've finally settled into the new season. There are some pretty strong ones. My favourites this season so far are (still) Apothecary Diaries, Apocalypse Hotel and Shoshimin. The surprise was Catch Me At The Ballpark. I'm also watching Witch Watch, The Shiunji Family Children, LycoReco specials, Zatsutabi, Can A Boy Girl Friendship Survive, Too-Perfect Saint and Gorilla Girl. There are others I want to pick up, but those are on HIDIVE (i.e. not available for me) or Prime (fuck amazon) and I can't be fucked to sail the seven season atm.

I'm also watching Monthly Girls' Nozaki-kun. I'm enjoying that one a lot. Fun character interactions.

I don't think I'd call Apothecary Diaries a fantasy anime. At least, a pseudo historical mystery anime set in ancient China is not what I'd call fantasy.

Interesting! Someone here predicted that eunuch would be Suirei and they were right. Unfortunately I'm still struggling to remember her part in S1... Maybe I'll see if I can find the specific eps for a refresher.

We also seem to get more and more clues about who Shisui really is. More and more seems to point to being Loulan/related to Loulan.

This episode seems to have laid a possible foundation for an absolute gut punch later on when Yachiyo finds out the Tanuki family has not been entirely truthful about their... encounter with humans.
