  • Speaking for san francisco:

    No

    No

Yes, in March last year we passed a proposition exempting them from real estate transfer taxes

Yes, there's a vacancy tax, but there's a decent amount of exemptions so it only effects large multi unit buildings

No, but there aren't really any strip malls in the city

  • He's so used to being the boss and having everyone always laugh at his shitty jokes that he thinks he's funny.

He's not a politician and has no charisma or any way of getting people to do what he wants outside of ordering them to, which is why he'll never do well in politics where building and maintaining relationships in your coalition is one of your main jobs.

Judge rules Mahmoud Khalil can be deported

  • do you know what "from the river to the sea" means?

Yeah, it means the same thing as a song I was taught in elementary school:

    From sea to shining sea,

    Let freedom ring

It means let everyone in this land enjoy freedom. I suppose if your a cynical bastard you could say it means free of natives, but I don't think that's what the elementary schoolers, and everyone else who sings the song means.

  • violently protesting, threatening taff and fucking up university property is not okay. That's stuff that lands you in prison.

Again they didn't do any of that stuff, at worse if the accusations are true they only tried to stop people who did that from getting arrested. How many people are getting deported for just resisting arrest?

  • Yeah, cause in a nazis belief system I should be enslaved or killed. There belief system is an existential threat to me, so yeah I'm not gonna cry if they're further away from me.

Mahmouds belief system is only an existential threat to the apartheid Israeli state.

  • Your comment:

for participating in violently occupying a university building, while threatening the staff with axes and metal

Makes it seem like they occupied the building and made violent threats, I was adding clarification that there is no evidence they did either.

If the accusations turn out to be true that doesn't mean that they weren't deported for protesting, that just means they found a legal excuse to do so. If a cop arrests a black guy wearing a black lives matter shirt for jaywalking, even if the guy was actually jaywalking that doesn't mean the cop who arrested them wasnt racist.

We're talking about motive here which is very hard to prove one way or the other. One thing you can look at though is whether the case looks to be getting special attention by the prosecutors when compared to similar cases. This looks to be the case as it seems this is the first time they've done this expedited deportation without charges for an EU citizen.

  • Then charge them with conspiracy to commit vandalism or whatever. They have so far shown no evidence that they entered the building, much less did any vandalism or threats, and no charges have been made.

If you allow people to be deported without due process then you've given the power of arbitrary deportation of anyone legally in the country to the state. Look at how this is going in the US, we sent someone to a Salvadoran gulag over a tattoo and now we can't even get them back home.

Do you really want to set this precedent and give that power to the afd if/when they gain power?

  • Small capital is still capital and relies on labor exploitation. If your talking about manufacturing wages globally then you should be talking about that SBOs income globally too which would put them in the top 1%. If there were no labor exploitation and the revenue from the sale of the products were split evenly among the laborers the SBO would be payed far less and the manufacturing workers in China would be paid far more.

  • Yeah but the only reason those supplies and services aren't available in the US is because China has all the manufacturing scale. It's not as if China is the only country that can make silicone.

If trump keeps to these tarrifs and importing silicone becomes too expensive then someone will open a factory to produce it here. Same with small scale molding. If there is truly a demand for something the market will find a way to produce it.

It may be more expensive because of higher labor standards, wages and environmental standards, but that just means it's getting closer to the true cost of the product, instead of the one subsidized by environmental destruction and labor exploitation.

  • Permanently Deleted

  • It is a word but it'd be more common to use the word beauty or attractiveness in that context, or "based off looks". People would understand what you mean either way though.

  • I'd hope that there are laws for what coating you can have on your boat. Slowly leaching heavy metals and paint chemicals into the lake probably isn't good for the ecosystem.

  • Maybe he wants to court the left block because of the three part hung parliament they're in right now so he can get more defense spending and Ukraine support passed since the u.s. is backing off Europe.

Maybe he's trying to fill in the power vacuum in the middle east after the u.s. lost all its soft power supporting this war.

Maybe he's tired of the houthis attacking shipping and hoping to get a French pass if they recognize palestine.

Maybe he's just a good guy and is just disgusted by genocide.

  • Christianity spread first in Europe, and in general, by offering the toiling classes something to look forward to besides suffering. For a bit charlemagne tried to spread it at the tip of a sword but that was more the exception then the rule.

It spread through the America's partly through violent colonization but also for the above reasons and the natives desire to assimilate into the new ruling class.

It spread and continues to spread through sub saharan Africa mostly due to heavy evangelical prosthelyzation from the west. By the time of African colonization the Europeans were directing there violence towards securing resources, not securing converts, even though that was the excuse they often gave.

Christianity may not be true but it is an attractive world view. Yes you may suffer the cruelty of others on earth but that is temporary, at the end of it all you will spend eternity in paradise and your torturers will be sent to hell. There's a reason Marx called it the opiates of the masses, and the promises of opium don't need to be true to sell.

  • Bit of a chicken and egg problem, most people aren't buying stocks because they have no money, not because they don't understand them. They have no money because the stock holders of the companies choose to put there profits into dividends and stock buybacks rather than increasing wages.

Class antagonism cannot be solved by just giving workers stock, because the worse off workers will just sell it due to economic pressure. Some may be able to hold it but they will have there interests ruptured with the stockless workers. So the capitalists will just raise the wages on those classes of workers with significant ownership , eg. The managers and professionals, and continue to ignore the rest, which is about where we're at right now.

In order to have mass ownership of stocks there would have to be a mass social safety net so the people aren't forced to sell there stocks to make ends meet. At that point then stocks stop becoming a source of security for the workers since they already feel secure from that safety net. Then they just become a voting mechanism for production that is still heavily skewed towards the rich. That would be better handled by the government or unions which have an equitable voting system.

    Occasional weed use sucks

First of all this isn't an anti-weed post, I use weed regularly and enjoy it. What I'm arguing against is occasional use, once a month or less, at that level your tolerance usually resets between uses. The thing they don't tell you in health class is tolerance goes both ways, you become tolerant to both the positives and negatives of use. For weed the negative im referring to is anxiety, though short term memory loss also goes down with more regular use. Whenever I take a break and then start doing weed again I get way too in my head and anxious which usually goes away after a couple sessions. This has also become worse with modern legal strains that have become way too concentrated. Dispensary edibles are a bit better since you can dose them easier but even then the longer the time in between uses the more likely you'll forget what's a good dosage. I see this a lot with friends who don't regularly do weed and they smoke with me, get way too high, have a bad time and then won't do it a
