  • Maybe. But switching from Windows to Mac, and again the opposite wasn't an issue. The learning curve was just changing the way my hands work with keyboard shortcuts. Functionality was so similar. Until Linux can get away from using terminal it'll be an issue. It may be anecdotal, but my anecdote is significantly more common than yours when you reach past Lemmy. Everything about Linux is awesome, except for the user experience itself and ease of use and it won't be mainstream until its structured in a way that makes it so. I'm very much pro FOSS and pro decentralization but I also only have so many hours in the day to be Sisyphus, pushing the rock up the hill of trying to understand Linux only to be in the same position and more frustrated than when I started.

And putting Linux as it is right now in schools will do no good. Kids are on phones. Right now, more than ever. They are used to and demand the easy os/app/website/etc.

  • For Linux to be a considerable contender for the average user, they need to make it more simple and like a Windows or Mac os.

I used Windows my whole life pretty much. Switching to Mac for a 5 year period was easy. Switching to Linux was easy. Using it was not. Installing a different distro was easy, using it was not. Rinse and repeat 3 more times and hello windows 11, looks like I'm using spyware. Because it just works.

  • I try to use Foss but only when it's a lateral move. I tried Linux mint. It came close but there were so many little things that just didn't make sense to me as someone who used windows for the last 25 years. Do I want to use Windows 11? No, especially with everything they've been doing to it. But in terms of usability, the sacrifices that I make by using Windows 11 outweigh the extra work, frustration, and time spent trying to figure out Linux (tried 3 different distros too).

I have 3 little kids, a full time job and aging parents. I don't have hours every day to try and make stuff work.

  • Here's the thing though, for the average plex user (myself included) you've already used too many acronyms and words I don't understand. Plex serves a purpose for a lot of people, people who are even willing to pay for it to be easy.

Kind of reminds me of Netflix before anyone else did streaming. They had so much stuff I stopped sailing.

  • As a Canadian, we've had the attitude for awhile "at least we're not as bad as the USA" but we've definitely drifted from the EU way of doing things. I've always felt like a hybrid between the two (with leanings more to eu).

I wish as Canadians, instead of looking over the fence and patting ourselves on the back for not being the USA, we'd look over the fence and try to see what we can do to improve more (because why reinvent the wheel if you don't have to).

  • Not murder, but I'll be damned if as a teacher and parent kids aren't wackier during the full moon.

Also, sugar doesn't cause hyperactivity. Who ever doesn't think that can teach for me on Halloween

  • I usually am the same way. I've definitely had the luxury of being able to try stuff in store.

Anecdotally, most of their stuff says 100% cotton but it doesn't shrink like other cotton things I've bought. I'm guessing it has something to do with the quality or blend.

Either way, I get where you're coming from and respect that - I'd be the same way.

    Jacked-Up Jill Coffee

Everyone and their dog has a Canadian coffee they love and post here it seems but I'd argue Jacked-Up Jill is the best one. Manitoba roasted and owned, supports women's initiatives in MB. The owner travelled to the places she sources her beans from and buys from co-ops, etc. She has been and usually is in direct contact with the sources of her beans so she can stand behind her product personally.

    Zueike Clothing from MB

Not sure if this counts as the material is sourced from overseas but it's Winnipeg owned and operated. Their Luxe line is the most comfortable clothing I own. They also take part in social and local initiatives.

I have broad shoulders and I find their Luxe clothing just fits better than the cheap off the rack stuff. On the zip and the long-sleeve I did have to size up from an xl to xxl

  • I also liked this book. As an aside, you might like "A Psalm for the Wild Built". It's VERY similar in vibe, not fantasy though. Hard to say sci-fi as it doesn't feel super futuristic other than sentient robots that have disappeared.

I'll leave it there but it was the same relaxed vibes of L&L.

    Any DS invites available?

I've been perusing this community and it seems invite requests make up half or more of the posts. That said, it seems its the best way to get an invite. Anyone have one they could share with me? Thanks!

    Need some guidance here

So, a very kind person helped set me up with Usenet and while I understand some of it, some of it goes above my head. This person, set me up with buying TB blocks. So far, it has worked well. I try and buy them for $10USD when they go on sale but I missed the last one and I'm running out. They're $45usd regular!

My wife and I watch a lot of weekly recurring shows so it adds up quick. Between that and movies I probably go through a couple TB/year.

They have some unlimited plans though but I'm not familiar with some of the "perks".

    Here's what I'm looking at

    Any insight would be great.

    Thanks!

I feel like I'm taking crazy pills

I installed a few different distros, landed on Cinnamon Mint. I'm not a tech dummy, but I feel I'm in over my head.

I installed Docker in the terminal (two things I'm not familiar with) but I can't find it anywhere. Googled some stuff, tried to run stuff, and... I dunno.

I'm TRYING to learn docker so I can set up audiobookshelf and Sonarr with Sabnzbd.

Once it's installed in the terminal, how the hell do I find docker so I can start playing with it?

Is there a Linux for people who are deeply entrenched in how Windows works? I'm not above googling command lines that I can copy and paste but I've spent HOURS trying to figure this out and have gotten no where...

Thanks! Sorry if this is the wrong place for this

EDIT : holy moly. I posted this and went to bed. Didn't quite realize the hornets nest I was going to kick. THANK YOU to everyone who has and is about to comment. It tells you how much traction I usually get because I usually answer every response on lemmy and the former. For

    best usenet group

    Hello all,

I'm a huge amateur when it comes to this stuff (I had a guy hold my hand on the phone and walk me through this) but I use Newsgroupdirect and buy blocks when they go on sale.

Is there a better group to do this from (or cheaper). I'm happy here but I saw an article that had some different places listed and it got me thinking.

    Which group do you use?

Help with offgrid (power but no internet) streaming

(I cross posted this on Plex too)

I'm looking to create an easy solution that is child/wife friendly. I'm hoping to get a set up going without internet. I however would like it to run like a Chromecast with plex.

    I was thinking of a

Dell Optiplex 3020M Mini PC USFF, running windows 10

An external hard drive with content.

From here is where I have gaps. Could I set up a plex server offline on the device, with plex media player and use an Flirc remote with pre-programmed buttons?

Essentially, I'm trying to create the experience of watching Netflix on a Chromecast but with plex and a pc remote control of some sort (with pre-programmed buttons that load up content so kid and wife only have to press one or two buttons to get to their shows)

    Thanks!

    Windows 10

I bought a computer off Kijiji that was from someone who builds them for cheap. I bought it for a plex server.

I recently did a hard drive check, and the hd is getting spotty.

I did a check for windows license and it says it's "retail" with a partial key. I was thinking of buying a new SSD to put in but how do I get a windows key now?

I'm somewhat computer minded but this one I've never dealt with. (I also have no interest in installing Linux right now)

    Thanks!

    washing machine hose length

    Hello!

I was wanting to move my washing machine and dry to a different part of the laundry room. It's all open ceiling so my thought was to run the cold/hot/drain hoses up the wall about 3ft, then across the ceiling about 5ft and then down another 3 ft to the sink to drain (or in the case of the taps, get the hot and cold)

I was going to use pex to get the water to where it needs to be.

Is this too far? Will the washer still be able to drain at that length? Can it drain up like that first?

    Thanks!

What's been the best video you've watched for home repair / maintenance /etc.

I followed this guy for framing my basement https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=p6vq-cOAi0Y

I'm looking for drywall repair videos for dummies (I've done it but it always looks bad...). Of course there's a million different ones, so what worked for you?

    looking for French resources

Particularly kids shows. I've found yggtorrents but it takes forever to seed. There's a season of TV I want to get for my kids but it's over the ratio I have haha.

I'm not concerned with paying for a private tracker so long as they're trusted. I'd prefer a Usenet solution if that's possible.

    seeking a recomendation

I'm not sure where to post this so I'm hoping onebag can help. I'm a band director and I carry large music scores (up to 12 x 18) and I'm looking for a bag that I can use to transport them back and forth from work. Ideally it would be less than $200 Canadian. Closest thing I've seen was the timbuk2 alcatraz backback but you can't get that in Canada...
