  • But like, a majority decided it would be a good idea to let him have a go at breaking that record. You thought, maybe he'd be a good choice once, rapidly discovered that was not the case and then decided to try AGAIN!?

  • Stream of consciousness really, for the most part tongue in cheek. I think despite it's verbosity, it's a good explanation of why the term is awkward once you give it more than a second's thought. But hey language is gonna language, people will probably take it as it's meant despite all that.

  • I always thought motherfucker was a weird exclamation. At least right now, it doesn't fit with modern concepts of humiliating put downs because things like "I fucked your mum" are commonly understood phrases of contempt and ways to embarrass or domineer someone yet it creates the uncomfortable paradox of the person calling someone a motherfucker inadvertently placing their opponent in a rhetorical position of dominance and power over at least someone whose mother they have fucked, and quite possibly even the mother of the person calling them a mother fucker if they're happy to turn the tables and make that claim. Whether the term might once not have had those confusing connotations before common tropes around fucking of people's mothers being a dominance thing someone might take a chauvinistic pride in; within current culture, it definitely does.

Then you have the fact that statistically, quite a lot of normal people are going to be motherfuckers including everyone's Dad and especially the father of the person calling someone a motherfucker, so it's offensive impact is up against the heavily diluting effect of the sheer banality of the status of motherfucker. It's almost like saying "oxygen breather" and expecting to offend.

Then it gets so contextually muddied by the fact that the word has become semantically very flexible. I think I've even heard it used as a term of endearment before, at the very least it can sometimes be a stand in for just "people", as in "some motherfuckers like to smoke" wherein such cases it's fairly neutral in affect or at least only mildly negative. It's also used just as an exclamation of surprise or anger with a situation, this is actually where I most find myself using it. It's sometimes used with regard to objects, rather than people with which one is frustrated, a usage that I guess isn't so far removed from the original offensive intent but still broadens the scope somewhat. This flexibility isn't necessarily bad, after all "fuck" is extremely flexible and people will infer intent from context pretty effectively but again it does seem to me to sort of dilute it's antagonistic and offensive qualities by becoming mundane.

I guess the term works quite well because it's rather graphic. It doesn't just require the word itself to be arbitrarily considered offensive like "fuck" does, but instead produces mental imagery that's shocking and explicit, maybe that's how it's managed to hang around so long despite semantic ambiguity and possible rhetorical backfiring but for me, I still think it's a weird term. It's so ambiguous, and so tied up with weird ideas around propriety and women that make it feel strange in contexts where someone wants to be threatening and vulgar. It feels like a strangely dandy and out of place anachronism in the sort of 'street' context that I think people want to evoke when they use it. Feels like something I might expect people to say right before slapping each other with gloves. Are they upset with the person's habit of fucking mother's because it implies they're a philanderer? Would that be offensive to them? Or is it the mother they're supposed to have fucked who's improper? A "slut" for allowing the mother fucker to fuck them? If so, why is the issuer of the term directing their distaste at the mother fucker and not mother whom they fucked? Are they suggesting the person so-called, fucked their own mother? I guess that could make sense, a bit weird but certainly insulting, yet I've really never heard that that was the intended idea.

  • I wonder if those dates are always accurate. Is the source date something searchable or likely to come up in results when a user searches for something "90s"? Maybe it really is AI garbage that's just tagged 90s.

  • This suddenly triggered a memory of one specific art attack but I've been scouring YouTube and so far haven't had much luck finding it. I haven't seen all that's available but I'm getting a bit sick of it despite my desire to still see it again. Maybe someone here remembers it.

    • I would have watched it in the 90s I think sometimes between 94-96. But I can't say for sure it wasn't a rerun from an earlier period
    • The particular art attack was a night scene of traffic on what I think was a wet road with a truck or lorry, the perspective is of the lorry heading towards the viewer, though a little bit profile, not directly head on
    • I think it was drawn on black paper
    • It may have been done with white and yellow chalk, certainly I remember the colours white and yellow being used
    • It was demonstrating ideas around being able to hint at the impression of objects at night without drawing the full object, only the outline of parts of it that would be illuminated by light sources which were headlights and smaller lights attached to the sides and corners of the lorry
    • It involved doing something kind of like how a little kid would draw a sun with a crude circle and rays but then some quite clever technique was employed to smudge those little suns and their rays in very straight lines used to trace the hint of outlines of traffic
    • It was finally finished off with some kind reflection on the road surface, don't recall how he did it

I've going through ep after ep, nowhere to be found. The wiki for art attack has only two mentions of "night" and it's neither of the two mentioned episodes, there's only one mention of "traffic" and it's in regards to using traffic cones. There's a mention of "truck" but that wasn't it either, I checked. There's no mention of "lorry". Couldn't find anything to do with "wet roads" either. Driving me nuts.

  • Look lady you had a pretty good run with getting rich AND famous by marrying a rock star and you even leveraged a later in life tv career out of being that woman married to that guy but I seriously wouldn't push it when your notoriety is on such tenuous grounds.

  • If everyone talks like this all the time and it influences how AI models produce text outputs, then those models are basically getting it right and would be indistinguishable from normal people since that's how all people will speak.

  • Ironically, either of them depending on the situation. Sometimes I even express the concept that I am indifferent to the choice between two things or happy with both of them by saying "ee-ther, eye-ther"

  • Those are also a good thing to find in a page source to use with yt-dlp if you want to rip a video from a page, it's like the playlist for DASH so you download all the pieces of a video and it's audio and they get put together as one thing instead of getting little silent 5s videos that you have download one by one and also find the audio for them separately.

  • Why doesn't the damaging and hot particulate matter in smoke do any harm to or otherwise clog up their spiracles like it does to the inner lining of lungs? I gather lungs are wet and also very delicate, but if they're directly oxygenating their organs through these spiracles eventually it must get to somewhere wet and delicate for the smoke to get in and potentially harm.

I'd like to start using 'digital wallets' like Pass Android or fpass but things like tickets or membership cards only provide links to 'add to google wallet'

Or apple wallet for that matter. I'm pretty new to the concept of a digital wallet, and I'm guessing that if I eschew these google and apple offerings then I'm not really doing much beyond basically a folder called 'passes' but nonetheless a dedicated app that only opens pdfs and images and 'passes' rather than anything else still seems helpful.

Unfortunately so far I've now been offered the opportunity to add things to a wallet twice in 2 days and both times I'm provided only with a link to add to a google wallet or an apple wallet, I don't get .pkpass or .espass files. Those links, whether loaded on a desktop or an android smartphone don't directly link to a file in any way so there seems to be no obvious way to bypass being asked to sign in and use google's wallet. So far I've had to download a PDF, to add in to Pass Android but it only imported 1 of 2 pages so I had to then manually make 2 pdfs out of it at which point, if I'm keeping the pdf locally anyway, I'm not sure it was re

I have DDG set as my default search but I miss effective business searches

DDG, to its credit, behaves like search engines used to, that is you just get results, not "answers" however for all the ways they annoy, Google has over the years made advances where "answers" actually are what I want.

Specifically, google search integrates very well with google maps so if I type the name of a business, the first thing I see is a formatted, sanitised presentation of the information I actually want from the business' website that is so rarely even on the site or at least not easy to find there: Where they are and when they open. DDG will usually find me the business' website if they have one and that's good and what you'd expect of a search engine but it takes much longer to go to that page, navigate through all the places they might have hidden that information only to discover they don't in fact include it at all anyway.

Is there any way to get that basic information very fast like Google has always provided? I'm talking specifically about browser based searc

I miss Dark Reader, UBO is pre-installed, but the only way I can see to install Dark Reader is through firefox add-ons page. I'm hoping that simply going to that page to install the add-on is relatively safe, I wouldn't feel too worried visiting the mozilla website generally, but given I'm installing extensions the browser I wonder if I'm somehow undoing the good that's done switching to LibreWolf.

Fennec on f-droid has anti-features, it connects to mozilla services that can track users. Does it HAVE to do that? Should I use it if my trust in firefox is eroding?

With recent concerns about Firefox and the mozilla corporation I am starting to wonder if I should take stock of alternatives. A common recommendation seems to be Fennec, but given what F-droid describes as anti-features, I wonder if I'm essentially replacing the problem like for like.

What do they mean? What services? Optional ones? Can it be used without connecting to any mozilla services at all?

pressing profile or switching instances displays user profile page of random Lemmy users, not my own

Kind of a two fold problem. First and most importantly, you press the profile button from the 3 lines menu on left of screen expecting to see your own profile and instead it displays someone else's profile who's not even on the same instance. The second is that now, changing user (I have one on one instance and another on another) goes to profile view rather than the front page or local or all of the instance for the chosen account (it is also of course, displaying the wrong user profile when it does this as well).

Though the choice of incorrect user profile seems to be random, it does settle on the one user and will always display that one. It seems to have selected someone from the lemmy.nsfw instance who likes AI porn in this case. I don't have any accounts on that instance and have never interacted with content they're commenting on lol.

Are there any remaining methods to bypass youtube age restrictions without signing in?

I used to be able to do it fine on my computer without really needing to do anything, I don't know why that was, maybe something to do with ublock origin? I didn't really look in to it because it worked. Then I started having to actually deal with the problem because eventually the browser couldn't just load the video no issue anymore. I had to either use Newpipe on my phone or yt-dlp to watch locally. Recently neither of those options worked. I also tried invidious or other various proxies hosting youtube videos, they are met with the same age restriction issues.

My final last recourse had been using Shutter Encoder which somehow managed to download age restricted videos that yt-dlp couldn't which is odd because I was fairly sure it was actually using yt-dlp but now even THAT doesn't work.

is there any scam hat involves borrowing someone's data by connecting to their hotspot to send a FB message and make a messenger call?

I'm about 70-80% sure it was actually just someone asking for my help but I did render that assistance and I'm still worried I may have fallen for something.

Someone on the street standing outside an apartment building I was walking past asked if they could have some of my data to tell they're friend they'd arrived somewhere as theirs had run out. This scenario seemed strange, I mean it's certainly possible, I just hadn't really heard of this happening to anyone these days. That said I couldn't immediately think of how it could be a scam and didn't want to deny help to someone if they needed it.

I gave them the name of my personal hotspot along with the password and they joined the network. It was awkward after that point because I was very keen to see what they did in case it was dodgy, but if it wasn't, well basically I'd just watching someone else's private messenger conversation over their shoulder. Either because he didn't care or didn't notice I watched and he did just send so

In SSBM on dolphin emulator, I can't seem to 'reel in' a grapple recovery with Samus

I've played this game since only a couple of years after release, but on other people's systems. I used to see people use Samus' grapple as a recovery mechanism not just grabbing but my play style got too ingrained for me to really learn new tricks and I considered this too hard and never took advantage of it.

I want to learn it now and it seems like it should be simple but something's wrong and I can't figure out what. I throw hook towards a vertical surface, it seems to 'latch on' but I can't figure out how to reel in after that. The hook just extends as samus falls until cancels out and she dies. I thought maybe I should be pushing the stick in the direction of the grapple hook, but it doesn't work, I tried holding other buttons after the latch on animation begins but nothing. I'm using an Xbox series X controller with Dolphin on Mac OS. Am I just too stupid to figure this out, or is it a glitch to do with this configuration?

I'm fairly sure they're the same but I'd love to know what the the 't' is all about. I'd heard some suggestion it has something to do with 'touchscreen' capability. It definitely doesn't have a touch screen but the power and brightness buttons are capacitative. Then again I thought all the variations of this monitor had such buttons so it would seem odd to point that out.

I'm near certain what I have isn't the Dell3007WFP-HC, though I'd be pleased to discover that somehow that 't' is some sort of alternative naming convention that means it IS the same because then it might actually be worth something.

I've had it since 2015 and my Dad bought it in 2006. I'm going to have to sell it because I just can't seem to get my hands on an adapter from DVI to HDMI that is active and dual link and I don't have a GPU with DVI out anymore (I've really tried btw, I've bought ones that specifically say they are dual link and specifically say they support resolutions up to 2560x1600 and they just li

They don't even really fit properly, but it happens every time and I find myself trying to find ways to fit the lyrics to the tune. In particular, the lyrics "I looked at my kingdom, I was finally there To sit on my throne as the Prince of Bel-Air" feels like it sorta fits right, even if the rest of the song doesn't.

Blender creates weird frames, crashes when playback is paused MBP M2 max

I'm learning Blender as I'd like to try it out as a tool for 2D animation. I was following a tutorial on making a bouncing ball. Everything was fine until we started adding materials, ever since, Blender has become very unstable. I can be doing fine following along with the tutorial but then if I hit space to play and then space to stop playback, either the whole thing freezes and the UI is unresponsive yet the force quite menu reports no issue with Blender that would indicate it wasn't responding, or, it renders bizarre frames that are not at all what I drew before then crashing in the manner described again.

The only way I can fix it is by reloading the project file but even then sometimes even after I've restarted the session, the fucked up frames that don't correspond to anything I actually did as part of the project appear at random intervals. At first I thought maybe they'd tweaned that way and they're really part of the project, but the same frames don't always display the weir

Does watching the Foundation TV series spoil the books?

I've heard the adaptation is not faithful in the slightest, but having not read the source material I wouldn't know. On the one hand though, I thought this might be a blessing because the series has ignited an interest in me to read the books and if they're greatly different then they should still read pretty fresh for me but obviously on the other hand if the series is what ignited the interest then probably what I found engaging is not the same thing I'd find in those books.

What are they like and would I still get as much out of them if I hadn't first watched the adaptation?

why are images loaded so weird in this app?

When I started using Connect, all the other apps I'd tried for Lemmy were so janky that I considered this too small an issue to ask about but after many versions I'd like to get to the bottom of it and see if it's just my phone.

In landscape mode, images will frequently not scale to fit the screen so you're essentially looking at a small section of the image greatly zoomed in. This would be frustrating at the best of times but it couples with another oddity of Connect, which is how it handles standard touchscreen ways of interacting with images. When the image is incorrectly scaled as I described you can't zoom out so you have to have this zoomed in view and try to pan around to view the image in sections but that can't really be done either because there's flow on effects to this glitch making that impossible. You simply can't move the image around enough to be able view the whole image when no matter how careful you are because there's some kind of imposed limit on the movement whic

What's up with videos where long sections have dialogue muted?

Is anyone else getting this? I've heard it a few times but the 2 recent examples I bothered to remember were this one:

    https://youtu.be/oSG7HpdQ34w?t=876

Where at around 14:37 the entire video actually, not just dialogue in this instance, went mute mid sentence and remained that way until 14:49

And then this one again today:

    https://youtu.be/hS2emKDlGmE?t=1788

At around 29:48 where only the dialogue cuts out. The first few times I ran in to this I assumed the video had just had an editing error but it's happening too often for that to be it. I noticed recently that my laptop will do some kind of automatic downmixing of 5.1 audio so I can hear it in stereo, but only if playing through my laptops speakers and not through the dock it's connected to with attached speakers, in which case it only monitors some channels in a 6 channel audio source but I checked that by switching to the internal speakers for the sections of mute video in question and it made no difference.

Can you make spotlight display images as filenames like it used to and also can I get rid of the 'photos from apps' section?

I used to search for a video file using spotlight and it would return several results and when it was a file I accessed more than a couple of times it'd be the top result. I'd see an icon of the application used to play the media type and the name of the file.

Nowadays, with the same keyword, I frequently can't find the file I successfully found before but also, even when it does find it, it doesn't display it anywhere near the top results, it's down in a section called 'photos from apps' which presents a grid of options, rather than a list, all of which represented by the VLC icon as it's my default media player but with NO filename. I have found it before because usually it's the one preselected, although not always. It's super frustrating not being able to actually see what's found. I think this is probably supposed to display photos as photographs or maybe videos using thumbnails, to make it easier finding an image compared to filenames given the name of the section 'photos from a

Why does displays have separate spaces prevent the spanning of a window across more than one monitor?

When this feature first came out I immediately disabled it because I noticed you couldn't stretch windows across two screens. I thought I might try putting up with it, but at the time I found it made it damn near impossible to use Avid Media Composer effectively.

It's been disabled in all the years since and I've never thought about it since until just recently where now twice in one month I've come across situations where something only works if it's enabled. One is for disabling the behaviour where fullscreening a video makes a second monitor turn black and now with Sequoia, the ability to use the native window tiling they just introduced.

I've always used magnet and then later rectangle to achieve the same and will probably just revert but I thought I'd try and give the native option a shot. Is Assassin's creed shadows going to be some free to play bullshit or will I be able to just buy it?

I don't really buy games much these days. I was trying to see what games would work on Mac and was pleased to see a new Assassin's Creed game is coming out on Mac natively. I was pretty stoked with this news, I've never played any of the AC games but they've always looked good.

I thought I'd check the Apple App Store to see if there were any other AC games that might already be out and there was only one option (actually on some 'App Store Preview' thing not the actual app store), called Assassin's Creed Mirage. It was listed as free to play with in-app-purchases. I'm really just not participating in that, can't stand that shit. I don't think I've actually bought any Ubisoft games since the Nintendo 64, are they all like this or is that just some unfortunate anomaly? I noticed also that it'd listed them collecting data about me, which, WTF?

Keen to wait till November for AC Shadows but not if it's going to be any of that nonsense.
