  • I like the idea of a space marine character and armor based on Isaac from the dead space series. Unitology and the Ishimura are much more appropriate as chaos [space marine] factions than an imperial-aligned chapter. Even more appropriate would be some sort of warp-spawn aligned group, for example a chapter that has been captured by enslavers.

  • I don't think anyone can host a relay right now aside from bluesky.

People can host their own data / Personal Data Server, which is somewhere between self-hosting a mastodon instance and creating an account on someone else's instance. The actual equivalent would be self-hosting your masto account separately from any instance (which is just not a thing with the current state of mastodon nor activity pub).

  • I don't see it mentioned anywhere in this thread: OP, in case you aren't aware, you can read the platform's speed off of it's hub, and use that to control a pump supplying the thrusters. Only one of the fuel/oxidizer duo needs limiting, so you only need a single pump to do this. Set the pump's condition to [speed] < [your target speed], and your platform will hover around the target speed.

This will over fill the thrusters when stopped (notably when orbiting a planet) but in my experience as soon as the platform resumes travel it burns through the excess in a matter of seconds before returning into the regular "regime".

  • It's good that the head of state says so publicly. I won't exactly hold my breath for anything beyond this acknowledgement to happen, sadly.

We're coming up on the 1-year anniversary of Macron dissolving the French Parliament, which is when he will be legally allowed to dissolve it again. The last time he hoped to bolster his party by capitalizing on the country's reactance to the far-right surge in the (then-) recent European Parliament elections, but the left got their shit together and managed to form a coalition that arrived ahead of both the far-right and macron's party. This time around he seems to be courting the moderate left a lot harder: a few weeks ago he announced that France could formally recognize a Palestinian State later this summer, last week he courted American Scientists fleeing the Trump Administration, and now this.

It stinks of opportunism, and I don't trust him as far as I can throw him. Still, this is better than him not saying anything. It is a disgrace that France made Haiti trade their freedom on the basis of compensating for the market price of the former slaves, and has (to my knowledge) never given back a cent.

  • Red

    Batter

Shit I can't remember most of them, but the "add 3 enchanted aces" is pretty solid (that is a spectral effect, right?)

As you might be able to tell, I play pretty conservatively. Though that might change once I've unlocked more.

  • I felt the same way about episode 6's waning mythological feel, until I recently watched all 6 in the so-called "Machete" order (4 -> 5 ->1 -> 2 -> 3 -> 6). Ending with 6 right after having gone through the prequels ramped the myth feeling up to 11 for me in a very interesting way - there are so many parallels between 3 and 6 and at the same time 6 shines so much the brighter in contrast to 3. There's a cyclical nature to the whole star wars narrative project as directed by George Lucas that I never noticed for my self until this rewatch, despite having seen all 6 movies over a dozen times each.

Especially the juxtaposition of Anakin's confrontation of Windu and Palpatine, contrasted with Luke's confrontation of Vader and Palps. It was always apparent that Luke's decision to forfeit his life rather than killing his father was his way of breaking his family's cycle (and symbolic of the rest of the Galaxy breaking free of the empire), but when I was just watching his father condemn the entire galaxy to fascism and evil on the off chance that his wife will be "saved" an hour or two earlier, it just hit different.

  • The example case they give is more that the New York Times account can verify that a given, other, account actually is the account for one of their journalists.

To do that with domains, NYT would need to create a subdomain of theirs and let the journalist use it. At that point, might as well let the journalist use their own domain as well as have the NYT account verify the journalist's account.

  • I like the idea, but then who gets to decide who is and isn't a credible source? Is it only intra-account verifying? Can anyone verify anyone else, or do you need to be authorized by bluesky to start verifying others?

  • 100% agree on this recommendation. Her Young Wizards / "So you want to be a wizard?" makes almost the exact opposite choices as the Harry Potter series does (magic is a choice not inherited at birth, Wizards feel responsible towards the rest of the world instead of wanting to ignore it completely, they learn on their own with their magic tome and some informal tutors instead of going to a school).

  • Succinctly put, though I got some cognitive dissonance when the author wrote about bluesky being their choice of decentralized network to get involved with without even mentioning the hosting costs involved with running a bsky relay (or whichever component of the ATP network actually holds the data "firehose").

According to this article it took a server that costs around $150/month over 4 days to spin up a working relay, most of which was spent ingurgitating half a terabyte of data (that's what ended up on disk in any case). Far from exorbitant, yet if I want to self host for my own personal needs it's still gobs more data and compute than any activity pub software needs.

Maybe my view of "decentralization as in democracy" is just fundamentally different from the author's. I get the feeling that to them, as long as each friend group has 1 self-hoster in it then democracy through decentralization is preserved. This would make sense that they orient themselves towards something like bluesky and the AT protocol. Personally, I don't think we should be satisfied with that level of decentralization/democracy - it's a nice start, but we should strive for reaching at least 50% of people self-hosting an activity pub instance to truly achieve the type of decentralization that serves democracy. Of course, I'm not aware of any activity pub software that can be selfhosted by even 10% of the population, currently, so there's definitely a lot of work to do before my vision is feasible.

  • I was about to be sad that they're giving up on "actually owning" their comic books, but then I read this part

I only purchase DRM-free comics, buying from publishers that release their works without digital restrictions such as Image Comics, Iron Circus Comics, and Vault Comics.

Having paid attention to them for the past year or two, my attention started drifting a few times. I ended up being more impressed with how much he's managed to condense explaining "enshittification" from 45+ minutes down to around 15.

I will be holding the fifteenth of the secondary slot/sessions for the Reading Club, also on "The Book" ("The Rust Programming Language"). We are using the Brown University online edition (that has some added quizzes & interactive elements).

Last time we began chapter 7 (Managing Growing Projects with Packages, Crates, and Modules), and read up through section 7.3 (Paths for Referring to an item in the Module Tree). This time we will start at section 7.4 (Bringing Paths Into Scope with the use Keyword).

Previous session details and recording can be found in the following lemmy post: https://jlai.lu/post/8006138

    Why?

This slot is primarily to offer an alternative to the main reading club's streams that caters to a different set of time zone preferences and/or availability.

(also, obviously, to follow up on the previous session)

    When ?

Currently, I intend to start at 18:00 UTC+2 (aka 6pm Central European Time) on Monda

Learning Rust With Entirely Too Many Linked Lists

This might be a more interesting dive into Rust for those with a fair amount of existing c and/or c++.

I tried it out myself a few years ago. I had fun reliving the nightmare of implementing doubly-linked lists in C back in school! I never made it to the end of the book, though; it got wayyyy more complex around halfway than I could process at the time.
