  • It's a little late now, but don't forget that FreeTaxUSA is free for federal and cheap for state. Also much less annoying to use than Intuit TurboTax. They don't do those fake loading animations like "checking the best deal!" As if a computer can't do like a billion of those a second.

Oracle DB had some odd extra syntax for left and right joins that other DBs didn't (or at least that I'd never seen). My best guess is that he auto formatted out of habit and maybe it took those symbols out.

It took a long time to find that. Because the only evidence something was wrong was that ONE of our customers wasn't being billed for ONE product. Everyone else was fine. Basically they were using it in a very atypical way. The left joins made sure to include them in the billing even because they didn't have whatever was on the right of that join. Everyone else did.

When uploading media to Discord, Google Photos is no longer showing in "browse media in other apps" on my Pixel 6.

It only shows Drive (for each account), Bug Reports (?) and System Traces (?). Of course, I just restarted my phone to see if it fixed it. It did, but as soon as I try a second time it's gone again.

I mention Discord but I'm pretty sure this file picker screen is not directly associated with Discord.

Update: This is affecting a friend of mine as well in the same way from the same time. Haven't determined if it's just Discord yet.

Update 2: Alright, if I scroll to the photos instead of selecting "files" then go to "all albums" I see Google Photos. Not sure what changed to make it like this but at least now I know.

Did Jerboa add some full screen option or have I done something in Android?

Sorry, this is a little embarrassing lol. But my notification bar with the clock and battery don't show in Jerboa any more. Is this some full screen option in the app I've accidentally turned on or something in Android itself I've enabled for this app?

    Thanks!

Good app to get a 3d layout of a room? Possibly a FLOSS one.

There are times I'd like to get a measurement of a room's layout. I know there are some apps that do this, but a lot are just full of premium pay wall stuff.

I'm just trying to get the dimensions of my office (it is an odd shape) so I can okay around with potential furniture layouts.

Implications of removing make dependencies after install with yay

     undefined

:: Remove make dependencies after install? [y/N] y

If I didn't remove make dependencies, would yay/pacman be smart enough to know the thing I am installing does not actually depend on them? It's a very nice feature of package managers that they track dependencies and can do things like remove "dangling" dependencies and I don't want to mess that up with some random dependencies needed only for a build. But I also don't want to install something every time I need to build lol.

So does yay and/or pacman know that the things I am installing don't actually depend on the make dependencies?

Solution: Keeping the make dependencies after install will not fool pacman and/or yay into thinking the make dependencies are "real" dependencies of whatever you're building from AUR. They both correctly recognize them as orphans (unless of course something else actually depends on them). So feel free to not remove them during install without worrying about dependency graphs gettin

I am trying to make a 2024 version of my paladin. I can pick Oath of Devotion because it is free. I can pick the Xanathar's options and Oathebreaker because they are from 2014 content I own, but I cannot pick the 2014 version of things I own if they're in 2024 content I don't own. I can't use the Oath of the Ancients.

Are there specific terms for the different types of monetary inflation?

When talking about inflation there are two main types. I usually call them treasury and CPI inflation, but I don't necessarily know if those are widely used terms. By treasury inflation I refer to the total supply of money, like the inverse of federal interest rates basically. By CPI inflation I mean the change of the consumer price index over time. Both are useful, but depending on the context one may be more useful than the other.

Xbox 360 controller works, but will only properly connect if powered on during computer's sign in (either wake up from sleep or reboot)

If I turn my controller on, it won't connect. But if it's on when I turn my computer on (or restart/wake from sleep), it connects just fine. I am using the "Xbox 360 Wireless Receiver for Windows". It's possible it's actually connected but not recognized by Steam or any games, but I am not sure how to troubleshoot that directly. The Arch wiki (linked) doesn't say anything about this specifically.

    I am on CachyOS.

    Any ideas? <3

Update: This somehow fixed itself. I don't think I even upgraded or anything since it was a problem.

The initial concept developed by the company involved using heat generated by Bitcoin mining rigs, according to Heata Co-founder and CTO Chris Jordan.

"We literally put a Bitcoin miner in a barrel of mineral oil and plumbed it up to a radiator," he told The Register.

Edit, because I think folks may be confused due to the quote I put in. They are not installing crypto miners into water heaters. That was just their original inspiration. Sorry for the confusion.

"We're not looking at serving real time workloads, we're not doing websites, databases, message queue servers," Jordan explained. "Our ideal job is; here's a chunk of data, go and process that for some hours. And here's the result," he said.

This could still prove useful for 3D rendering workloads, finite element analysis, computational fluid dynamics, and others where there is a lot of CPU or GPU processing, he claimed.

KDE Accessibility, enable bounce keys with less than 100 ms?

My Keyboard has a chattering problem. On Windows I was able to run a program that would detect this and fix it. I believe I could use the built-in keyboard bounce accessibility feature to solve this, but the lowest setting it will allow me to use is 100 ms. When I type normally I will sometimes push a key that fast (e.g., hitting backspace a lot or in a video game). Is it possible to lower this settings to something like 10 ms? Maybe via the terminal?

    Edit:

Potential workaround found. In ~/.config/kaccessrc manually change it to something like 10. Save and reboot. It didn't seem to take hold if I didn't reboot. Even typing this now I am seeing some problems, but I also hear the ding indicating it is working. Change BounceKeysRejectBeep to false to get rid of the ding. A comment on the bug mentioned 40 ms, so maybe that's a good sweetspot.

Does multiplayer on Helldivers 2 on Arch (CachyOS) work for you?

For me it isn't working. Single player works fine. If Crossplay is ON I can see other games on the world map, but time out when joining the lobby. When I disable Crossplay I see none at all. (Yes, this is the opposite of what you might guess based on other issues people have mentioned where disabling Crossplay fixed it.)

Update: I switched to Proton 9 from the Cachy version and it works!

How can I fix keyboard chatter in software?

On Windows I use the linked program. I tried using KDE's accessibility settings but the lowest time it can do it 100 ms, which I naturally do on occasion (mashing backspace quickly, for example). Is there any other solution?

Is there a way to automatically take a btrfs snapshot prior to upgrading?

I've seen some tools that do things like take snapshots periodically and ones that add snapshots to grub, but not this specifically. Does something exist?

This will probably be on EndeavourOS, not Arch directly, if it matters.

    Amateur Radio @lemmy.radio
    JackbyDev @programming.dev

Can I transmit/receive audio from my computer through my radio using a programming cable?

Using one of those FTDI kenwood adapter programming cables. My gut feeling is no. It would be nice for things like sending/receiving SSTV images.

I am able to transmit if I use a double ended male 3.5 mm cable in the microphone hole of the radio and the headphones hole in my computer, but I have to hold down the PTT button. Also I have to turn the volume on my computer down a lot or else it is distorted. I suspect this has something to do with "line out" versus "headphones" voltage levels (I recall seeing some YouTube video discuss this).

    RF radiation pattern image gallery?

Is there just a gallery of various antenna types/lengths and their radiation patterns anywhere? It seems like there are some programs to make them, but I can't seem to easily get them for Mac and I also don't need something super advanced. Just something showing various "standard" antenna types and their patterns for various wave lengths.

    "Strong transmitters" near RTL-SDR.

I'm still pretty new to radio stuff and still learning. I have my technician license and have made a handful of contacts. For Christmas I got the RTL-SDR. It has a warning saying "DO NOT use near strong transmitters. Max input: +10 dBm." I am having difficulty understanding exactly what that means and whether I can use my handheld radios near it. These are cheap ~5W radios.

I'm curious about the practical and theoretical both, here. So a simple yes-or-no would be helpful, but I'd also like to know the math.

    • Right now, I have a vertical half wave dipole (each leg is 48.8 cm, which I believe makes this a half wave dipole antenna for 146 MHz?) attached to my RTL-SDR. I've been trying to understand gain, but it seems tricky to find and understand the charts. This antenna came with the RTL-SDR, but it's telescoping and that's the length I have it at.
    • My radio is 5W and uses a knockoff NA-771 type antenna.

I don't have any other sort of tool to measure the output of my handheld radio.
