  • Okay, so I never said never use violence or to just accept the status quo. Don't put words in my mouth. I'm not so nieve that I think any real change won't happen without a lot of violence. Violence is distasteful and should be avoided, but is also sometimes necessary. If King Louis' head didn't get chopped off, I would probably have been born a literal serf instead of a modern version of one. If the oligarchs of today lost their heads I wouldn't feel a thing, when they bite the dust I don't. I just think the conversation on lemmy.ml needs to take a pause and think for a second. Cause it seems to me that many people here want to kill everyone who is higher up on the social ladder than they are. That just perpetrates the endless cycle of violence, it doesn't make a better world.

Sure the world would be better without Jeff Bezos, or Elon Musk, or many others. I've read discussions people seemed to take seriously suggesting that millions to tens of millions of people in their country deserve to die. Apparently saying don't kill people with complete disregard for the importance of life is a bridge too far for this part of the internet.

  • You're asking for people to be empathetic to an enemy on the internet. Good fucking luck with that. In real life I hope the people who call for violent revolution are just blowing off some steam and aren't actually advocating for the wonton destruction of uncountable lives. Like you I'm concerned they're not, but I've learned that there's no room for nuance online.

Which is why to everyone else I'm saying this, just because I said I don't want an enormous number of people to die, doesn't mean that I don't want to see capitalism fall. I just don't want to commit a Holocaust doing it. Now go ahead and downvote me now.

  • I wish I could tell you more because my area did that, we've done what we both agree is what needs to happen. We elected a third party candidate as our representative. Not as our president, that's insane lol. Also I don't know how what we did would apply to the United States other than just saying grass roots organizing. Saying even that much reveals more about me than I'm comfortable with online.

  • So I don't have a hat in this race because I can not vote. I think you have a fundamental misunderstanding about how a government is formed in the United States. The odds of stopping a Democrat or Republican from not winning the 2024 presidential election are futile. If I could vote, but I can't, if I voted third party I would be putting my effort into what I know is a futile effort. That seems morally the same as ignoring it because I know the results would be identical. The only moral option I would then have is to choose the least bad option. The most moral option would be off the table for me.

Actually the president used to be less important than they seemed. The United States Supreme Court decision that president's are practically kings changes a lot. The other side of this is that the president doesn't really matter. The president really only executes the will of Congress. It seems to me that if you really wanted to do the moral thing, it would be changing the roots of the problem. Not a single branch. It's the hearts and minds of grass roots organizationa you want to change long before anyone walks up to a polling booth.

Just saying, as someone who can't vote.

  • It's been discussed in other comments that because Google is A/B testing their old maps model against a new AI model that only some people are experiencing it. It's probably only being tested in some areas.

  • They're very supportive when you need it because that's their job. They're being nice to you so the boss doesn't have to be. Imagine instead of an entire department dedicated to preventing you from taking your boss to court, there was no such department. The world boss actually has to treat his employees with respect, for a change. HR are not your friends, police are not your friends. Anyone who's job it is to hold you back is not your friend.

  • Permanently Deleted

  • This is why you won't see real change until we stop slapping corporations with fines and start slapping executives with jail time. That is literally the only way to break the cycle.

    Can't be said enough.

  • I don't disagree with your criticisms of the UN. They're not a perfect organization, and UN membership shouldn't be some standard of sovereignty. However, diplomats have always been able to talk whenever they want, the problem that the League of Nations and then the UN tried to address was all the backrooms conversations nations used to have that were part of the causes that lead up to the first world war. Having an international platform every nation needs to at least listen to is better than the alternative. Arguably, untill now the UN has succeeded, there hasn't been a WWIII.

  • Did they say that it'll be the other sides billions, not theirs? I am so jaded that this discussion doesn't feel right without someone saying that their people will prosper after they nuke everyone else. With some bullshit that obviously the other sides nukes won't work but all of theirs will.

  • Robotics can be dangerous, don't jump into the deep end of robotics without learning how to use electronics first. Definitely start with electronics and move up to robotics once you have a lot of electronic failures under your belt. I would suggest that you keep robotics in mind as you learn.

Many people provided you with great places to start with electronics. Start there, because robotics are electronics with motion and that's more dangerous. Motion can hurt someone or start a fire. Especially for as a hobby I'd be most concerned about accidentally starting a fire because of bad code and poor failure planning.

If you pick this up and get some experience with electronics, you'll begin to understand a lot of the things that can go wrong with robotics before they start a fire. Also this can get very expensive, you will destroy components. It's inevitable. I may be speaking from experience.

  • Yeah she did, and you started another comment thread in this post about it. Talk about it there. You don't need to railroad every conversation into trying to convince people that Harris is a monster. Let other people talk about other stuff from time to time.

  • All of them, but I'm also unemployed and looking for work. I can't let me not answering my phone to be the reason I get passed over for a job. More often than not it's a spam call but I can't afford to let an opportunity for an interview go. It sucks, before this I would barely answer the phone for known contacts. If it can be said on the phone it can be said in text, in far fewer words too.
