  • Glad to know I wasn't the only one, lol.

  • This and the way Mastodon handles likes/favorites are the biggest things holding them back right now, IMO. People don't want to bother with a social media they actually have to put in the work to curate themselves, hell the algorithm is one of the main reasons why TikTok is so successful. Also, by having favorites (which is... weird and confusing? Just call it "likes", you don't need to reinvent the wheel here). Not only do people get confused between favoriting something and bookmarking something, but since it's only counting the favorites from your instance, it makes it look like posts are getting barely any interaction, giving this "screaming into the void" feeling that will cause a lot of users to lose interest. The number of likes favorites needs to be cumulative across instances.

  • Aurora Store would probably be your best bet, honestly.

  • I was more so commenting on how painted road lines here become nearly invisible when it rains. AFAIK, a lot of self driving tech relies on visible road lines to direct itself, but maybe the tech is good enough now to where it doesn't really matter.

In any case, I guess it can't be much worse than how the human drivers here handle things, lol.

  • Permanently Deleted

  • Damn, never even realized he was in an Ace Ventura movie. What an explosive career.

  • Can't wait for even the slightest rain to totally cripple the entire fleet.

  • Man, that sucks. I hope they can reopen at a new location if they do get pushed out.

  • It's on the Series X/S and the PS5. They're bringing it to the previous console generation now.

  • Seems like onboarding will be handled by a bot, so I imagine it shouldn't really matter what instance you're using. As for instances that are "Joining in", I think that just refers to Admins for those instances promoting the event.

  • lemmy.ml is getting nothing new from lemmy.world, seem cut off since Saturday EDIT: fixed on Wednesday

  • +1 to this. I've noticed that posts haven't been federating in [email protected] either for the past several days.

::: spoiler Full article by Johann Castro & Kelsey Sanchez AUSTIN, Texas β€” A small plane crashed into a vacant, two-story home in Georgetown on Sunday morning.

According to the Georgetown Fire Department (GFD), the crash occurred just before noon in the 500 block of Northwood Drive.

The plane had three occupants, all of whom were taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Shannon Hayes said she was walking her dog when she saw the plane crash and called 911.

"That boom, that noise that that plane was making beforehand, you knew it wasn't good," Hayes said. "Some of the neighbors ran over. Two people climbed out of the airplane onto the roof and were asking for ladders while I was on the phone with 911."

Austin police officer shoots, kills man on Menchaca Road

::: spoiler Full article by Britny Eubank AUSTIN, Texas β€” The Austin Police Department (APD) is investigating after an incident that resulted in an officer fatally shooting a man.

Police Chief Joseph Chacon said at 4:54 a.m. on Thursday, July 20, a 911 call came in indicating a woman was frantically knocking on the door of an apartment at the Tides at South Lamar complex, located at 3622 Menchaca Road. The caller said the woman was asking for help.

One minute later, APD officers headed to the residence, where they arrived four to five minutes later and spoke with the woman who was knocking on the door. The woman told police there was a man chasing her throughout the complex and that she feared for her life.

The officers broadcasted that a man was seen running west through the complex. Chacon said that body camera video from the responding officers showed the man had a weapon that looked like a knife.

    According to Chacon, the officer

An upcoming project by the Austin’s Transportation and Public Works Department aims to improve pedestrian and bike access along East Fifth Street as part of two planned efforts by CapMetro to double-track the Red Line rail transit network along its existing path through East Austin. The project’s pedestrian upgrades will focus on the stretch of East Fifth Street between Navasota and Pedernales Streets, which includes the rail-adjacent Red Line Parkway trail and connections to other pedestrian networks including the MoKan Trail, Crosstown Bikeway, and EastLink Trail.
