Although i understand it is very worrying, i want to emphasize that a poll Like this doesnt make sense right at this Moment. The last government split up beginning of November. The New one just finished their coalition plans, now their party members have to agree to the plan and from may on we will have a government again. So for six month wie had no real government - in these times. Of course people feel super insecure. Since building a coalotion is always about compromisses the conservative Party gets a lot of hate for making huge compromisses and not follow their agenda. If they wouldn't they wouldn't find a partner. But people of course say " its not what they promised to do". So conservative people are upset and might just say they vote afd to shock their party. Stupid yes, but would they really do it? polls in this Situation will always meet people that are less confident and more insecure and people in this state tend more to defiance and thus to extremes, especially when the world goes absolutely crazy and we have no government to react. Its not very surprising. Let's wait a few month into the new government doing things and then see the polls. I am not optimistic that afd will go down a lot. But at the moment so shortly after the elections you cannot make good polls.

In France macron is (or at least was) quite unpopular for what he's doing within the country. But in foreign affairs he's really based already for years I would say. One of the few persons who had visions for the EU before putin and now trump reminded everyone to be happy we have it.

Another German here. I love France. And arte is the best TV Programm. :) just that you don't feel alone.

My theory: Many germans just had really Bad French teachers and honestly its not very easy to learn the spelling, so since their youth they are a bit mad at France. I personally know 3 people that had to redo a year because of bad french grades. Nothing More behind it usually. I noticed its the same with French people that had to learn German. Some love Germany now , the rest projecs their dislike of learning the language on the whole country. However, at least in my bubble, people that like France are in majority. Even those that don't speak french love to visit.

Currently its 40min one way. Before I lived in a smaller City , so the way to work was only 15min.

When i leave work i force myself to not think about it anymore until the Next Working day. I Turn off work Mails etc.

I commute to work by bike, more than 30min. It somehow helps to leave work behind on my way back. While my thoughts are still work related at the beginning of my ride I think about other things when reaching home.

Sport and making music, where you have to focus on something else than your current stress are also very helpful to silence the stress thoughts.

And of course talking about it with friends.

Ich glaub auch, dass sich da in Sachsen viel (zum schlechten) geändert hat. Hab mal ne zeitlang in Dresden gewohnt und das war was alle erzählt haben. Wie schockierend es ist zu sehen, dass es so bergab geht. Dass es schonmal anders war. Als ich dort war gab es die afd aber schon, hab die Zeiten davor leider nicht mitbekommen.

Echt, auch in meinem privaten Heft? Das war mir so nicht klar. Also ich war auch noch nie in Versuchung verfassingfeindliche Symbole mit mir rumzutragen.... Ich dachte nur heft wäre ähnlich privat wie überm bett. Also wenn ich es rumzeige klar, dann ist es was anderes. Wieder was gelernt.

And a tip for Hotels and hostels. Maybe do the search with booking hostelworld and co but book via the Website of the place you want to stay. Booking and hostelworld take 20% of the hotels of the price you pay for a night. They can do this because they can threaten the ho(s)tels to not appear in their List anymore and no one will find them then. They are evil too.

So far, I found that many people underestimate the soft skills they bring. For many (not all) jobs the actual knowledge of the field you need to fulfill the job can be learned quite fast. But they need people that are good organizers or good communicators or good critics, or people that dive in and check every detail or people good in seeing the bigger picture. I sometimes think its more important to find a job fitting to your softskills than to your degree. In an ideal Job it would be both of course.

For example. My father switched fields from social worker to systems administrator. Most would say what a big shift, but he just loves to help people - no matter if its their daily life or their computers he can help with. But IT had better job opportunities. He is very happy.

While it is true that the rise of AFD is horrible and alarming it is also true that there is a big majority in germany completely against their world view. And these people more and more feel the urge to act. They should have started earlier, yes. But I am happy to see already a little movement of the so called " quiet middle" to be not so quiet anymore.

Also, the rascist people voting for afd mainly want foreigners out of Germany but I think even within afd voters those that want to invade neighbours again are very few. Its not mainly heroic bodybuilder men that think they're superior to all countries. Its a lot of middle aged man whining they cannot correctly pronounce people in the football team anymore. That doesn't make them less racist or dangerous for Germany, but the danger for the neighbouring countries at least is -in my view- very little at the moment.

In my experience you get PhD not by being super intelligente but for being patient and stress resilient. And for both of them you need curiousity and enthusiasm in the field. A lot. Dont know for other countries but here in germany my PhD with medium Grades was good enough to get a lot of Jobs AS long as i let them See a glimpse of my Enthusiasmus for science.
