  • It's great! Also for anyone that happens to be in the overlap of people that enjoy chess and go, and want to play go online as well, there's online-go.com.

I don't know that it has all the features that Lichess does, but it does have puzzles, tournaments, custom games, and so on.

  • Gonna take this as a jumping off point to mention some software.

Wanna get into video editing? Shotcut's pretty solid in my experience.
Into mind-mapping stuff? You might give Freeplane a look.
Have a drawing tablet & want to use it to take handwritten digital notes? Check out Xournal++.
Cross-platform Notepad++ alternative? Might give CudaText a try.

Could list off more but will leave it at a few for now.

  • In terms of fully free, obligatory mention:
Your library may offer more than books alone, depending on how well supported they are. Borrow music, movies, sometimes even video games. For music and movies they may also offer these to borrow digitally as well via online services they coordinate with.

  • Lately I've been casually researching a variety of things like usual, and remembering again that part of that needs to involve finding more international sources, like looking for the various research groups/centers in different countries to see what their approaches and results are.

I don't really know where any of that would fit into any communities (CivilianScience? CasualResearch?), so here we are.

Besides that been doing the usual browsing around for more open web stuff and hey, NeoDB is cool! It's federated software that "helps users to manage and explore collections, reviews, and ratings for various cultural products, including books, movies, music, podcasts, games, and performances." So sort of like a hybrid Letterboxd/RAWG/Goodreads/etc. from the sounds of it.

  • I don't think so. The largest ask communities, according to their own descriptions, say they're for more open-ended questions, albeit AskLemmylemmy.ml seems to be more lax about it (and it seems like maybe [email protected] has kinda relaxed on it too).

There's the newer [email protected] that doesn't have the open-ended part to their description, so might be a good fit.

Meet Neptune, a TikTok alternative where creators can hide likes and follower counts | TechCrunch

Neptune is one of the newest short-form video apps on the block seeking to compete with major players like TikTok, Instagram Reels, and YouTube Shorts.
    [...]
The startup was founded by Ashley Darling, who has a background as a talent director at the OPTYX agency, where she worked with “underestimated” influencers. She set out to develop a platform that emphasizes creativity instead of the number of followers a creator has.

“I spent years working with independent creators, both as an influencer myself and later helping brands,” Darling shared with TechCrunch. “I kept hearing the same thing from creators and users, ‘I miss when social media was fun. When it was about creativity, not competition.’ So, instead of waiting for a platform to listen, I built one.”

  • It's just a different Wafrn instance, which is why you couldn't log into it.

As far as I'm aware it's the first and only other Wafrn instance run by someone besides the creator of Wafrn. Hopefully in time there may be more.

  • Tbh memes like this, and terms like "threadiverse" (not to mention fediverse), probably aren't helping.

I know it's well-meaning but the reality is the best "propaganda" for any of this is worthwhile content originating from our communities and fun/pleasant, welcoming communities. Get that going and people will share stuff from these sites to the corporate enclosures and they'll start seeing the grass really is greener on the other side.

  • Yes. Alongside what others have mentioned, I think a couple factors are context oversight (in part from context collapse at times) and subsequent fumbling of code switching.

Many primarily comment in news or politics threads (see front pages with sort set to Active) or otherwise more serious communities, so I think it carries through in their other interactions elsewhere. It's something of a bummer because generally neither party to fumbled interactions feels good about it.

  • Similar situation to Irelephant, first I'm reading about Loforo. Doing some brief research, it doesn't look like Loforo's integrated ActivityPub that much, nor does it seem to be open source so others could run their own instances.

In those respects Wafrn is the clear choice for a federated Tumblr-like, as it's open source and integrates ActivityPub thoroughly. As a matter of fact, a little more digging and I found where someone has been helping test run another Wafrn instance in the form of "evil" Wafrn.

Plush microblogging bot, because everyone's feed could use some plushies

On a Mbin instance or one of the various microblogging sites and feel a need for something lighter in your feed? Here's plush bot to help!

  • This reminds me that I should look more into how much one owns an online space anyway. Any time stuff like this comes up it occurs to me as I remember reading about site owners getting into disputes with hosting companies like GoDaddy, or sometimes domain registrars.

Anyway, if you're overly online, spinning up your own online space is definitely better than being dependent on far more fickle corporate platforms, so well worth considering.

  • The sort of bizarre thing about this kind of trash legislation is, if you take a moment to consider it as being in good faith (which it's not but...), it lays the groundwork for delegitimizing its own supporters.

If the elections were so insecure and widely defrauded as to justify and demand this legislation, then there's zero reason to believe those seeking to pass the legislation have any legitimacy whatsoever. After all, they may have only gotten their positions by exploiting the elections' insecurity, and if not exploiting it, benefiting from it nonetheless and should in turn resign instead of further diminishing the integrity of the governments' institutions.

However, obviously they don't want people to consider that angle, and this is mainly a means to disenfranchise voters and sow further institutional distrust while encouraging party loyalty, as there is no genuine basis for this legislation.

[email protected] or [email protected] for broad sports discussions.

Not interested in moderating either community, as I don't know nor follow sports enough to be of much help, but thought it would be good for those interested to have a general community like games/gaming for any sports.

A community like this could help act as onboarding to other more specific sports communities along the way.

Both communities are presently moderated by people that haven't been active in three years and two years respectively.

    [email protected]
    [email protected]

Also I'm aware of a couple other general sports communities, but they're on a widely defederated instance (Hexbear) and a more withdrawn instance (Beehaw), so they're not all that suited to it. Strangely enough the big sports instance Fanaticus Social doesn't have any such community, otherwise it might be a solid option.

  • Besides the active forum with an off-topic section recommendation, I've gotten the sense a lot of this style of communication has shifted from forums to group chats in whatever messaging app people are using, whether it's Discord or Whatsapp or whathaveyou.

It's unfortunate as those aren't the same style at all, but seems to be how things are now. It's part of why I wish more fediverse instances would instead operate with a site mindset and try to build distinct identities. A few do and they're much more interesting for it imo, feeling like the small community site they are in a good way.

technical details cuz u guys are all nerds :3

i kinda lied its not really an "app" because it isnt doing the rendering on the 3ds.

its actually a web app. the miiverse app on the 3ds is actually just an applet that embeds a web page.

if uve ever heard of those "miiverse replacement" services like pretendo or rverse what theyre doing is basically just patching the urls the client goes to with their own servers . this is what im doing.

i wrote a server in python that does ssr page rendering, proxying for images and has some routes for favoriting/boosting/etc that the client uses xmlhttprequest with.

writing a website compatible with this things ancient web browser was fun. and i didnt even need to do that many css crimes!! its funny bc in making this i accidentally made a really simple mastodon web app that can run on like. chrome version 3

  • Also if you don't want to manually switch it all the time, go into your account settings and change the sort type to whatever you prefer. Similar should apply in apps, with a bonus: some apps will let you change default comment sort setting as well.

On Solitary Confinement, California Officials Side With the Prison System—Again

Cynthia Mendoza’s first pregnancy, in the free world, was a time of enveloping love and anticipation. But in 2006, six months into her second pregnancy, Mendoza was arrested and jailed pre-trial in a Lynwood facility overseen by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. Once there, she was sent to solitary confinement, where every good thing she remembered about pregnancy became a horror. “I had nobody to talk to, I had nobody to comfort me,” she told me. Cut off from human contact and the warmth of the sun, Mendoza’s mental health quickly deteriorated. Her access to proper nutrition was so poor that her hair started falling out.

Thoughts on "linkdumping", pacing posts, and a schedule posts feature

I've noticed occasionally well-meaning people trying to start communities, or move them to new instances, promptly filling the void in what I'd call "linkdumping". This is when someone creates a bunch of link posts to a variety of articles, sometimes from a single site, but often from a few, all related to the community's topic/focus. At a glance it's similar to spam, but I think it's sort of wrong to label it as such, as on further inspection you can tell that the intent is different.

Unfortunately linkdumping tends to overlook the impact this has on the community's appearance to casual browsers, and how they'll be able to maintain visibility after the initial spate of posts. Instead whenever possible I think people considering creating new communities should be encouraged to pace their posts throughout the day/week/etc.

That's a little much to do manually, so that's where pointing them to Lemmy Schedule, if t

Tip: if on a larger instance/site, search for communities first before making a new one

For those on smaller instances/sites, you may have to use Lemmyverse to find communities first due to how things work here.

As to how to check whether you're on a larger instance/site...Lemmyverse helps again, just switched to instance view. If you're along the top of the grid (or list), you're in a larger instance.

For those on larger instances/sites, chances are you're already connected to a variety of existing communities. Given that, it's better to search first, making sure search isn't set to Local but instead All, before jumping into creating one. If you want to be more thorough, use the above Lemmyverse link to double check that there's not another active community already out there.

All that said, if you do find another community and it's active, yet seems not to match the approach you'd like to take, then go for making a new community. However consider giving it a distinct name and/or sid

    Bluesky Can’t Take a Joke - Wired

    Original link: https://www.wired.com/story/bluesky-cant-take-a-joke/

What Brown experienced is familiar to any former Twitter/X user gathering their bearings on the young and decidedly more earnest social network Bluesky: a distinct humor-detection issue. Some users are unable to decipher jokes, or they are deliberately trying to miss the point to make a different one. Many Bluesky users migrated over from X, where the top DOGE who did Nazi-like salutes on television is live-tweeting the destruction of American infrastructure. That’s a different and much more serious problem. Still, the seeming obliviousness-slash-self-seriousness of many Bluesky users is grating when you’re not used to it.

For the ancient Romans, the roads and paths leading into and out of cities were crucial: not just for getting places, but as a very real kind of “memory lane”. Tombs lined these ancient byways – some simply bearing inscriptions to the memories of loved ones lost, others, more grand, accommodating space for friends and family to feast in remembrance of the dead.

Some of the tombs even address the passerby directly, as if its occupant could speak again, and pass on what they’ve learned. Take one Pompeiian example, set up by the freedman Publius Vesonius Phileros, which opens with ineffable politeness: “Stranger, wait a while if it’s no trouble, and learn what not to do.”

Going into Pompeii, and leaving it, was about being reminded of ways of living and ways of dying – as well as an invitation to tip your hat to those who trod the path before you, and to learn from their example.

    Which is why

Tip: want to post to your own profile/user space? Create a personal community and set it so only moderators can post.

For those switching over from Reddit that are interested in this feature, there isn't a direct substitute for this with Lemmy right away. Instead you have to create a community and set it so only moderators (which will be you) can post, and everyone else can only comment.

The plus side to this approach, despite the initial hurdle, is that you can name the community however you like, give it a distinct icon and banner and so on.
