  • watched the first two episodes of Andor, this show is a really slow burn huh

  • Still thinking about Dragon Ball Z. I can't stand watching it as an adult, but the problem isn't the writing - it's the pacing. There's a lot of great plot twists and intrigue and character development in the namek/frieza saga, but there isn't 32 episodes' worth. The 18 episodes of Kai are better, but still a bit of a drag.

DBZ Abridged's pacing, on the other hand, is great. There are 23 episodes, but the episodes are short, less than half of an episode of American television, so it's more like 10 ie a little more than half of DB Kai's runtime even with the filler arcs.

Most importantly, every episode bookends with interesting events, and there's no long spots of dead air because the animators need to stretch for as much time as they can. There's none of the incessant repeating the same information over and over that plagues DBZs official anime, and the fights are fast and punchy and don't stop for long unnecessary ringside commentaries from the peanut gallery.

DBZA's Saiyan Saga is 13 episodes, so with some tweaking you could totally have had the Saiyan and Namek sagas of DBZ fit into one anime season and it would be absolutely perfect. Well, perfect except for the recurring problems in Toriyama's writing like sidelining every interesting character.

I should watch that recent spinoff show where they got turned into kids. IIRC that was one season of tv, so maybe they fixed everything I'm complaining about.

  • keep them in captivity for decades after the war ended. It's very common to see MIA/POW flags here.

and EVERYBODY believes this shit, even well educated libs who should know better. They all think Rambo 2 was based on a true story.

  • i hate being at my parents' house hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate

  • spending a long time pooping at the casino because my car is plugged into one of their free chargers

  • I've abandoned every attempt I've made to watch Dragon Ball (og, z, gt, kai, and super) as an adult. Z was a big part of my childhood but it just doesn't hold up, Toriyama had a beautiful art style though and I love the visuals in all of his works, especially the way he draws tech.

edit: I have enjoyed rewatching the movies though, most of them do a great job of capturing the feeling of watching Z in a nice, tight format.

  • I mean it would have to, since Master Roshi destroyed it once, then piccolo did later. Not sure if it ever came back a second time but if not then I guess they cut off all those tails for literally no reason.

  • The moon kept coming back every time Toriyama forgot that it was destroyed someone used the dragon balls to wish it back.

  • The way it's depicted in cartoons is not a thing, but Ventriloquism is definitely a thing. Turns out it's mostly about making people look somewhere else while you talk (such as at your puppet) which creates an auditory illusion.

  • The recurring plot point in Dragon Ball where saiyan children get their tails removed makes me unreasonably angry. Like yeah I get it the Oozaru is dangerous but it seems like there's gotta be a better solution here than child mutilation - trunks, goten, bulla and pan all had it done to them as infants!

  • Ethan: I need to leave I'm just gonna make one final point

thirty minutes left in the video

    lmao

  • it's a bit like this

to be a little more specific, every time Hasan asks a question it's about the ongoing genocide, and every time Ethan asks a question it's about internet drama or making some really petty semantic argument to assert that Hasan was doing antisemitic dogwhistles.

  • why am I watching the ethan/hasan debate nothing about this is worth watching but I can't look away

  • go back in time

have a bunch of records of classic songs, plan to "write" them and get rich

none of the songs become hits

every musician I stole from gets rich with a different "hit"

mfw I learn that the music industry is all industry plants

  • Yeah that's what ships with Debian. Doesn't explain why they have auto saving and backing up files disabled by default so you don't find out until it's too late though.

  • AAAHHH WHY DOESN'T OPEN OFFICE SAVE BACKUP FILES BY DEFAULT I WILL FUCKING KILL YOU FUCK YOU FUUCK YOUU FUCK YOU FUUCK YOU FUCK YOUU TTTHIS IS AN ACTIONABLE THREAT YOU ARE GOING TO DIE FUCK YOU FUCK YOU FUUCK YOUU FUUCK YOU FUCK YOU FUCK FYOUU FUCK YOU FUCK YOUU FUCK YOU FUCK YOU FUCK YOU FUCK YOU

  • The march to the Soviet War Memorial in Berlin’s Treptower Park on May 9 – Soviet Victory Day – by German Democratic Republic (East Germany, GDR) diehards wearing Stasi Guards Regiment and National People’s Army (NVA) uniforms scared the German public.

Celebrating the defeat of fascism scared a bunch of Germans?

One of the biggest and most enduring propaganda lies of the Communist state apparatus was the legend of their β€œantifascist” origins. The truth of the matter is that the GDR’s Marxist-Leninist ideology made any real processing of National Socialism impossible.

The Marxist-Leninists in the east processed national socialist leaders directly to the wall, while the west, nato, and the USA gave them top jobs in the government and military.

Meanwhile during this period German Communists obediently stopped agitating against the Nazis

What did the nazis do to the communists that made them unable to continue agitating successfully I wonder? Maybe there's a famous poem that brings it up.

while, yes, the Soviet Union did chase Hitler’s forces out of eastern Europe – the East European people were not freed as a result: they had to go on living for nearly 50 more years under another totalitarian dictatorship.

oh no they got to live in one of the most advanced societies on the planet which still holds the high water mark for equality among people living in a large industrialized nation how tragic.

Recruiting Players for a Basic Fantasy RPG two-shot

I'm looking to run the game on Friday May 2 and 9. Depending on how much interest there is, I may fold people from this site into my morning group (start time 7am PST) or create a second group and run it at a different time/date. So please post your interest even if those specific days don't work for you! Session length will be 3-3.5 hours.

If you're not familiar with BFRPG, the core rules are available for free from here, and a google doc with my own house rules/automatically allowed supplements is available here. The tl;dr on the core rules is that it's a modernized re-imagining of OD&D, providing a very simple to play system that encourages creative player thinking over build optimization, and the tl;dr on my house rules is that I simplify initiative and movement in combat and give every player my own variant
