  • Cut off internet for people who pirate... Those people are now unable to stream anything... Sacrifice thousands in potential revenue over an infringement that maybe cost them a few dollars, if that... Deter no one because everyone thinks they won't get caught.

    Good move. Smart guys.

    A questions about sports (sorry).

First, forgive me for a mostly political post, and if political discussions aren't welcome I have to problems deleting this.

I live in a highly conservative, sports loving area and I'm tired of listening to all the obviously insincere hand wringing and lies about safety and trans athletes in women's sports. Sometimes, changing the subject or leaving isn't an option, sadly. I was hoping you all could give me a little advice on how to respond as I'm tired of being silent.

Instinctively, I want to try and derail these arguments by suggesting that collegate and youth sports implement something like the "red stripe" rule from youth football. In pee wee football, if a player is growing faster than their peers then their helmet is marked with a red stripe and they're no longer allowed to carry the ball or play certain positions. This is both for handicap and safety reasons.

And just to be clear, I think the safety/unfair advantage argument is bullshit.

    However, suggesting a red stripe

  • 100% this kind of techbro need to be cool and liked is one of the main drivers behind why our nation is fucked right now. Zuck, Musk and all of the other guys flipped right when people called them out on legitimate bullshit because they could find easy validation among the MAGA rubes, MRA choads, and conspiracy nutters. They sold out their platforms and the country for a tiny dose of external validation. Fragile little man-children.

  • I'm sure they'd eventually expand the list, but what's shown on the screen could be thwarted with a thesaurus inside of thirty seconds. Which once again just goes to show how fucking shortsighted and dumb these bastards really are. They can't handle written communication at a third-grade level.

  • It must be exhausting being that insecure. Having to constantly disect everything, even if it doesn't involve you at all, for any miniscule slight so you can broadcast to everyone about your "superiority". I'm too tired for that shit.

  • You're not wrong, a lot of these chuds, especially the tech bros, are obviously deeply insecure and have figured out they can't buy authenticity and coolness with money or power. That's where that brittle and mean bitterness they all have about other people living as they choose comes from. But it goes deeper than just emulating edgelords for kicks and covering up for their self-esteem issues.

Doing it and avoiding any tangible punishment or long term fallout demonstrates what a powerful, untouchable person he is to the boot-licking right wing base. The whole goal is to build an in group of followers that is protected with power and privilege (which ensures their loyalty) and this is a signal to them that he can do just that.

It's also a demonstration of unity in having a common enemy, and being willing to do anything to "win". Wether it's politics or a culture war, being willing to escalate is seen as a marker of strength. It's the only kind of political and social interaction they can understand.

You're right that he's likely not a hard core admirer of Hitler. It's not about a particular political standpoint, it's about having the power to do whatever he wants and making sure people know it.

  • Granted...

However, the lyrics seem to be sung from the point of view of someone who turned to crime after the system failed them, and the Clash make it sound defiant and powerful despite the outcome.

It's time to settle some grievances with the Law.

EDIT: I mean, just imagine that first guitar riff coming in right after someone kicks Thomas square in the nuts as the opening salvo... beautiful.

  • That's what we found out.

My wife enjoys her work, finds it rewarding, etc. etc. and has never been really content as a homemaker. My job is alright, but I don't feel any real passion for it, and I don't need a work atmosphere or to be around a lot of people to stay engaged. I'm happy just keeping things organized and running smoothly in my own little corner of the world.

I make just a little less than we need for her to stay home, and she makes peanuts in comparison.

It really hacks me off. She works in education, what she does is far more important to the well-being of society than what I do. If our paychecks were reversed, and they honestly should be reversed, I'd be happy to stay home or work part time but it's just not financially feasible.
