Is this why people who were born in Jersey never leave Jersey?😂
Holy fuck that is an absolutely terrifying read. Anyone scared of sharks should prolly think twice about reading cuz it justifies every fear especially if you struggle to accept reassurances by professionals that there is nothing to fear and how shark attacks on humans are just anomalies. 3 attacks in a span of 30 minutes and all following the PSA that assured the public that the first attack ever recorded on the American Atlantic coast was just an anomaly. Bam 3 more dead in less than 1 hours time. AND the 3 subsequent attacks happen in a fuckin creek and not the ocean. Fuckin wow. What a story.
Well sheeet I have an extra amd 6900xt and i think two ledt over amd apu's I can never make any decisions on how to use. I have kicked around the idea of testing out a build that runs the 6900 with my 4090 as either dedicated monitors for each or getting real squirlly and seeing what size deepseek llm I could run with the extra gpu's I have. Would there be any benefit of running a dual boot set up with Windows thru 1 gpu and Linus thru the other or would it make more sense just building a seperate oc all together to run Linux. I really hate the idea of having 2 seperate systems to keep track of files and projects for. Just seems like a lot to manage while also learning all new software, work flows, filing system and everything else there is to learn in making the switch. Not enough to scare me away from pulling the trigger but still another stressor to the equation.
Ok but what about all the devices for disabled users to have accessibility wothout comprimising the systems ability to still use a keyboard and mouse? Or the image editing software that allows users to use drawing pad & stylus in the program without affecting anything outside of the open window?
I'm not guna get pedantic or saying you're wrong by listing out examples of shit i dont understand how they are able to work but seem to work in ways that would allow similar functionality to what I was hoping to be able to set up.
I look at everything I do with Windows OS as having some workaround, somewhere from sometime when they thought it would be a feature but canned without actually tieing up any of the changes made to the system. You know kinda like how they announce their PC will take screenshots of 3verything you do, realize everyone and their mother absolutely hates the idea, bench it for a year or two, then burry the announcement in a change log of an update noone will see that its coming back.😂
I like to think their policy is, "If you never close a single door you opened, you'll never have to face a closed door ever again!" With the small print that says, "and fuck anyone who complains about the furnace they're paying for to heat the house they paid for that is now heating the whole neighborhood." 🍻
So I'll tldr the relevant bit from the body relating to your reply, earlier this year on the same PC and Windows OS I was able to edit the settings.ini file that fallout 4 uses by adding parameters for always keeping the window on top when game is not the active windows in focus, also to always keep the game active so it would continue running even though it was idle, and 1 or two more lines for related display options that I can't remember off top of my head.
Not arguing with you or saying you are wrong, I mean fallout 4 is technically approaching antique status it's so old but I'm just holding out hope that I can find a way to edit some file in the Witchet 3 build files that would have the same effect. I'm just not holding my breath on it lol.🍻
I've only messed around with a virtual desktop once and it was a decade ago. Can you have windows run one desktop instance at the same time with a virtual one and have both running in seperate monitors? Just wondering, there would need to be a higher priority than me being lazy while gaming for me to consider setting up a virtual instance just to browse walk throughs and mod pages. Appreciate the suggestion tho 🍻
Awesome reply. Thank you. A couple questions I have:
What Windows does do is assume only one window can have focus at a time, i.e. it is the window receiving default and direct input from the mouse and most especially the keyboard.
Correct me if I'm wrong but this seems like it may have had some changes around the time they started the snap function for windows because it was around then I thought that you started to be able to just hover a mouse over a window and use the mouse wheel to scroll around the open window without actually clicking or activating on the window before having to scroll. Would the window in this case still be considered to be running in the background or does the system keep the window in some sort of suspended but still active state? It is able to know what window is over lapping another. For example if I have two instances of file Explorer open but not open to full page, it can determine what window is behind the other.
If your application or window does not have the focus it's also not a given that it's even visible, so it's not necessarily safe for the user to be able to interact with it anyway.
For this, it reminded me of when I was running Fallout London and one of the mods req custom buttom mapping for use with a gamepad. I can't remember the name of the software but it was one of the most frequently used software for mapping keyboard controls to a gamepad and it allowed me to set keyboard buttons for the different mod featured, then I used the software to map the keyboard buttons to the controller buttons. Basically I could've replaced my keyboard and mouse with a controller. I feel like allowing a user to use a 3rd party software to make that many changes to an input device would be way more of a security risk than it would be for them to design a means to do the same thing thru the actual system.
It's probably also safe for most game developers to assume that regardless of what the computer is capable of, the player's attention can only be directed in one place at a time. There's not much benefit in making sure your program can accept inputs even if the user's nose is buried in their web browser because it's unlikely they'd have the game in any state except paused while they look something up anyway.
Did not even consider this but in think you hit the nail on the head with this part and the other part where the developers want the least amount of variable that could distract you from focusing on their product.
Seriously, awesome reply and appreciate all the information you were able to provide. 🍻
Oh god. You have my sympathy lol I felt like my question might sound like a ridiculous request to anyone who is more knowledgeable than me at this stuff but I commend the shit out of you taking on a request to help someone trying to do their own LAN party on one pc. Did you have to run two instances of the same game when you did it? Like run one off a virtual desktop and the other of the native OS? I haven't started my the crusade of switching from Windows to Linus yet so excuse my not knowing how it would be done.
Hahaha really thats all I wanted to do too. To be able to scroll through the game settings or in-game mod settings and also scroll thru the online tutorial at the same time in a more streamlined way than bouncing back and forth between screens and controllers. So many times I unplugged and replugged in my controller cuz the usb port is sketchy and my controller will disconnect sometimes even though it's plugged in but everytime all it was, was that I never re-clicked on the game's screen to unpause it. 🍻
Yeah but I know I edited the settings.ini file for fallout london to always stay active and to always be "in front." I'm uncertain of how effectively it worked because I didn't really do any testing with it, I just know it stopped the game from pausing when I had to look up a mod issue or troubleshoot something. I half purposely kept saying OS in my post because I feel like if I mentioned thst it was Windows 11 the responses are usually less informational and more recommendations to switch to Linux but yeah I've been on the same windows 11 OS and PC for Fallout London when it seemed to work and for Witcher 3 where I couldn't find any recommended workarounds.
Not saying your wrong at all tho. Just giving the context of what I've experienced. And 100% I know there are so many fucking variables at play and so many variables that are changed with everyone of Microsoft's billions of updates they release every other week. So I'm definitely not saying you're wrong it's just annoying is all.🍻

What's the deal with it being impossible to natively set up a PC to be gaming with a gamepad on monitor 1 while mouse is actively browsing desktop or other open windows on monitor 2?
cross-posted from: https://lemmy.world/post/28741527
I enjoy playing modded games on PC. My IT competency is all informal and hands on so I apologize if this is a dumb question or it seems like I have no idea what I'm talking about. What I was looking to do without using a 3rd party software was to have a game playing in any type of windowed, borderless windowed, or full screen display window on monitor 1 while also having the ability to navigate an open browser window or even just navigate my desktop on display 2. This is all a very normal set up I know but the brick wall I hit happens because my ability with a keyboard is a huge gaming retardant for me. So what I wanted to try and set up was for the gamepad and gaming window, regardless of what display monitor it's being used on, to remain as an "up front" and active process while being able to use my keyboard and mouse as their normal operating devices to navigate my dektop or other active program windows simultaneously.

To save anyone the click, the link is for a video that shows the exact same text as the title and nothing else. Doesn't show or tell anything about the game.
Lol so it's nothing like a saxophone or a trumpet and is just a curved Didgeridoo. (Fuckin Australia, 10/10 coolest names for everything they name)
"Failed to load image" I'm on mobile app so may just be me but it appears your link is broke.
Id start by asking for help from experienced vetrans of this site instead of other new users to the site🤪 /s
Would you spend trillions of dollars building something that was "unlikely" to result in catastrophic failure? I would prolly want more confidence of its longevity before dumping generations of wealth to build a structure that will cost billions more even to repair minor maintenance to.
.I feel like this article is trying too hard to paint the US military as being a monster that its made it too confusing to follow. There are so many easier stories to use to accomplish this that I don't understand what this article is even trying to report.
My questions after reading are:
I don't understand what is being done for the first time since 1974, is it Japan and US jointly investigating charges against a US military member or is it the first time they're doing a sort of audit of criminal charges?
If Japan has numbers for criminal charges against US military personnel are they the ones enforcing the charges?
Did the 2 rape investigations go uninvestigated until the change that happened days ago and why wouldnt Japan investigate their own people being raped?
If the US was brick walling Japan from investigating criminal charges of US personell then why all of a sudden allow this extended investigation by Japan?
Found waaaaaay more information from these articles:
https://www.nytimes.com/2025/02/18/world/asia/us-marines-japan-okinawa.html
https://asiatimes.com/2024/12/the-truth-about-us-bases-on-okinawa/
Lol its 2025, homie. Just grow an auto flowering strand. Compact as fuck, turnover fast as fuck, minimal maintenence or Grower skill required.
I honestly don't know how the moon's physics work but it does appear to be covered in giant fuckin craters. So I was assuming there isn't much to stop something from smashing into the nuclear power plant once constructed and causing potential fallout risks.

I love the real time experience watching the fediverse grow and catching random sightings in the wild!

Was checking to see if an extension was available for Android yet when I saw a familiar word tucked into their screenshots lol.

Why can't my grandfather find hearing aids he likes?
Looking for anyone with experience with helping pick out hearing aides. It's hard for him to describe what he doesn't like about them so I can't provide much in the way of specific issues. One thing he has said was that they change how loud some things are compared to how they should be which I think he means they will make certain pitches louder than other pitches so something like setting spoon on glass plate will be loud but the sound of a low voiced man talking is quiet when normally the low voices are the only ones he can hear. He is the typical old geezer so it's easier to list all the numbers in Pi than it is to get him to a doctors office.
We have tried 2 different very expensive aids costing thousands each, we tried the new apple ones, he tried countless magazine ads hearing aids and doesn't like any of them. He's a very straight forward man so it's not his way of getting around using them or that he's embarrassed. He wants to find a pair he likes but he is also a very picky

In almost 100% of scenarios that I can think of, the underdog is always the "good guy"
What would it take for the Goliath to be the hero and David to be the pessimist? Not just in fictional narrative depictions but throught history too. The only scenario I can think of that kinda fits the mold was 9/11. Where America may not of been the hero or "good guy" but the underdog Taliban was unanimously viewed as the "bad guys." I'm not super knowledgeable when it comes to global geopolitical relations so I'm all ears for any scenarios that prove otherwise and would love to hear them.
Edit: I am loving all the responses and its a great conversation, I just wish I phrased the title differently so it wasn't getting downvoted. I didn't mean for it to come accross like I didn't think it ever happened.

Issues with disabled/deactivated Windows 11 services and features that are still trying to run.
I know most replies here will likely encourage Linux and I get it. If it were up to me it'd be done. The problem is I work from home and are bound to certain limitations.
So to the problem at hand, I hope to get some insight on:
The two culprits are bitlocker and Window's gaming service/overlay not sure what actual name of it is without having the error message in front of me. I'm not nearly as irritated at the gaming issue as I am with the bitlocker issue because the bitlocker is causing random crashes forcing PC reboots.
Where I find my hands tied is for both scenarios, I have gone thru Windows Services, Gpedit, regedit, and admin powershell command inputs that all show have successfully terminated the bitlocker and gamepad functions from even being able to be initiated.
As for bitlocker specifically, I have never enabled, used, activated or even owned a version of Windows 11 that provided access to bitlocker services.
I didn't know it even existed before the Windows 11 24h2

Built my dad a retropie on an old pi 3 with just aboot every nes and snes rom I could find on it. I think I struck Xmas gifting gold.
My father is not a gamer by any sense of the meaning. He plays the mobile game kinda platform style shooters here and there but that's it.
Was racking my brain for something to get him when for no reason I found myself digging up memories of being 4 or 5 years old sitting on his lap playing some flying shooter game. Him and my mom were 17 & 19 when they had me so I often forget how much of life they missed raising a little shitbrick that early in their lives.
So I really went out on a limb and felt like I was reaching with this present. Going so far as to get an extra Amazon card either for someone else if he liked it or for him if he didn't like it.
Holy shit did he like it. Took me by full surprise. As soon as I showed him the library he was like a kid in a candy shop. So many stories and anecdotes about this game and that game. Told me how the "idiots" at megaman made sequels 1-8, then for reasons before he could google them, they skipped megaman 9 and went to megaman x, megam

While the internet is throwing a bitchfit over Witcher 4 staring a women, I'm just here showering and pondering if it'll be canon for Ciri to be old enough to fuck in the game.
Gimi 30 year old Ciri on a unicorn with new monsters, magic and a good ass storyline, and I'll be good to go.

I have a glass slipper and looking for my prince or princess who stole my heart!
Ok maybe they didnt steal my heart but they definitely stole my admiration! So here is my story of what happened and the snowball that came so fucking close to being the coolest thing a person will ever do in their lifetime.
The event was the Buffalo Bills vs San Francisco 49ers NFL game that aired on NBC this past Sunday night. Anyone who saw the game will agree it was one of the best displays of the world's finest athletes of their sport battling an unforgiving opponent known as Lake Effect Snow.
We are talking about a game between some of the best, if not the greatest, players of their generation and position who could barely keep their feet under them taking off from the snap. The finest route runners, sprint from the snap at a jogging pace, run in one straight direction, stomp their feet on the ground like anticlockwise breaks, and just turn around to try and catch the ball. Lol I digress but you get the point. It was a snowy wintery shitshow for anyone not raised by Bills Mafi

Can someone explain the framework of the current British... idk is empire the correct term?
What is Britain?
Is it the same as the UK?
What is Briton?
Wtf is up with Canada?
Is it it's own country?
If yes, then why do they still salute the queen or king?
If no, how are they operating as it's own country?
Same for Australia I guess, too?
Was there an Australian revolution?
Are all parts of the British island the same country?
Or are Scotland and Ireland seperate countries?

Wish there was a community called !furiouslyinfuriating for shit like this...

What the shit happened to freedom of information act? Now we not only have to sacrifice our privacy to some 3rd party contractor but I must also create a fucking account in order to access information our government provides? Fuck that shit. I'm just guna make a throwaway account. Scrape the fucking site dry and upload the shit to my own website. Fuck them.

With all the articles about Microsoft/Windows integrating AI into "x" software and "y" software, do I need to do more to disable all AI existence off my PC?
I'm on 24H2 Windows 11 with a local account set up, ran windows debloat tool and have CoPilot/onedrive/other data mining features un-installed.
Edit: I have a plan to make the switch to Linux. For now I was just looking for any feedback on how to handle current Windows OS. I whole heartedly hate Microsoft as much as the next, I promise lol.

Can anyone tell me what the 2nd graph down is showing for the tinted area?

I think it's the same color as the color designation for:
Avg.: 72°F | 58°F
But I have no idea what the graph is showing if the blue line is showing the Temperature at that time of the day. All the values change with the vertical slider for to change the time of day.

Why does it seem the majority of protests in the US are to oppose something while so many protests in other countries are looking to influence improving something?
I want tonpreface that I use exclusively Lemmy for my source for all news. I have no real social media accounts, will never be caught dead watching network or local news on TV (idc if im 37 its cartoons of gtfo lol). I use duckduckgo, Firefox for search and browser ever since I was tasked at work to keep a pulse on seo rankings. Id give cancer permission take my testicles befor ingive any fuckin company's ai permission to my data. If any of my hardware or software is using "AI" it is not at the front end or a configurable setting. What I'm building to is that I feel I put in more effort than most to not have the news I am fed influenced by anything more than what is happening in the world right now and the decisions news outlets make to report on.
Now we have that established, I can elaborate on my question. When I see reports of protesting in the US (live outside of Buffalo, NY obligatory Go Bills!), I see primarily protests in opposition to an event or thing. I get the literal defin

Looking for some clarification on what im guna call the Lemmy workflow from a new post to the front page.
So one of the selling points I've seen tossed around for Lemmy is it's absence of a Karma system. Keeping that in mind can anyone explain why Lemmy wouldn't adapt a more automated/bot style approach to increasing content. What I had in mind was a system that shocked Pikachu meme used some sort of scraping method or web crawler method that could produce continually fresh posts to communities like the NFL community or even offer a new News type of community that is fed every news break from a defined set of sources. Hell Lemmy even offers the ability to create its own automated front page of the internet instance that exclusively for those who enjoy the automated content provided. If it gained traction there would be no limit to the specific communities it could support. For example if there were a NFL auto posting bot why not one thst serviced each individual team's community.
The biggest ckmplaint in reddit back in the day was the increase of bot activity generating reposts. With L

Options for translating content in languages other than English.
I am one of the many Lemy converts from the reddit exodus to give context of my experience using Lemy. I exclusively use the sync app for Android.
In my eary days here I was shocked to find how much content was in languages other than english. I can usually manage with posts that are links to articles by having them open in browser and use a translating extension.
However I was wondering if there were any ways to have the content only available in the sync app to be translated?
Fuck it'd be awesome if on my zfold multiwindow function to even have the native language in sync with the translated version in another window to let me pick up on some of the other language's commonly words and phrases. But I'd be happy with just being able to read their English translations.
