When a website can be accessed via a clearnet and a .onion url, is there a benefit to making use of the .onion url?
Context:
I am considering pointing a ".onion" url to my instance (mander.xyz).
I did some tests with and it seems like mlmym works well with JavaScript disabled. Since JavaScript is often disabled in the tor browser, I could make the .onion url point at that front-end instead.
This would be fun to do, but I wonder if there is a practical benefit to the ".onion" url as opposed to simply accessing the clearnet url via the tor browser.
EDIT: I went ahead and created an onion URL to try out, but I would still like to know if there is an actual advantage to .onion urls:
Lemmy 0.19.4 on julkaistu ja se näyttää sisältävän melko paljon parannuksia. Teen päivityksen viikonloppuna.
Photon UI
I am in the opinion that some alternative UIs should be available on the instance (domain) – if possible, of course. Lemmy.world already has many alt. UIs, I think we should have something like that. So, here's a list:
Do you hate the way Beehaw website looks? Do you long for the days of that other site with the old formatting??
Well Beeple; I present the old interface thanks to Mlmym! Give it a try if that's your thing - https://old.beehaw.org.
A note here though, that is an external project dealing with the Lemmy aspects in their own way. If you find an issue or bug on https://old.beehaw.org, please try the same on https://beehaw.org before crying foul. Please report any issues or bugs to the right place to get them fixed.
If you don't like the layout of regular Lemmy, feel free to use these :) (They can also be used for instances other than ours. Except for mlmym, they only have a single instance mode and no default instance config)
And in case you're wondering why we aren't using old.lemmy, a.lemmy etc instead...
...it's because CF wants money for that and I'm not paying f
The instance has been updated with the following changes:
The pictures backend has been upgraded to the latest version and the storage was moved to a so-called object storage which should be cheaper than standard server storage. It also means we have unlimited storage, yaay!
The storage is unlimited as long as I have unlimited amount of money (which I don't) and as long as there are enough servers on Earth to store the data and ultimately if there's enough matter in the universe to even create more servers. But it's at least virtually unlimited.
Started by adding the docker-compose.yml files for two of the lemmy-ui alternatives that are running now.
mlmym, Voyager, and others don't seem to have docker-compose.yml files on their project pages yet, so I'll fork and properly PR those later this afternoon.
Now that this instance has been running for a little over two months, I thought it was a good time to zoom out a bit and do a little reflection.
Two Month Reflections
First, I cannot believe it's only been two months; it seems way longer than that (in both a good way and an "I'm so tired, you guys" way). While I do run other public-facing services, they're much more hands-off as far as day-to-day work is concerned. Lemmy, on the other hand, is very much like a living organism, almost a pet, that requires near constant supervision, interaction, and attention. The codebase is being rapidly developed, updated, and patched, new vulnerabilities and rough edges being discovered and mitigated, and bad actors constantly looking to exploit, DoS, spam, troll, or just shit all over the place.
It's not all bad, though. In the same two months, many new and exciting projects have sprung up to give Lemmy a fresh face with new UIs. DubVee is happy to offer several of those as official
Venho novamente quebrar o silêncio, depois de duas semanas sem grandes novidades.
Entretanto tivemos falhas, correções e atualizações. Na pequena parede de texto abaixo, vou tentar

Falhas

The database migrations took a while which meant about 10 minutes of downtime between 9:09pm and 9:19pm NZT. But the site is now up and hopefully running OK. Let me know if you see any issues. I'm hoping this will lead to a more stable site, but one big issue still hasn't been resolved so I can't promise anything.
And since we're doing an announcement post, here's a couple of things to check out that I never officially announced:
Voyager (previously called wefwef) is a web app for Lemmy intended to resemble the Apollo reddit app. You can use any instance but we have our own hosted at voyager.lemmy.nz
mlmym is an alternate frontend intended to resemble the old reddit theme. As far as I can tell, this is specific to an instance, so will only work for people with a lemmy.nz account (but other instances have their own version, such as lemmy.world). You can access this frontend at old.lemmy.nz
If you're feeling nostalgic for old Reddit, I've installed an alternate Lemmy UI called mlmym at https://old.dubvee.org/
It's not my project, and is still a work in progress, but feel free to comment here with any bugs and I'll try to post them to the project's issue page.
