I have encountered an increasing number of [physical brick-and-mortar] businesses with a 'we don't accept cash payment' sign at their checkout.

I thought you HAD to accept cash as it was legal tender - can someone explain [thanks].

EDIT: Thanks to everyone for the comments - I am much more informed. I guess I am just a dinosaur... I just like cash, I guess. I will, however, draw the line at buskers/ homeless folk holding out an eftpos machine...
