Reignbreaker - new roguelike for fans of Hades

store.steampowered.com Reignbreaker on Steam

Reignbreaker is a high-octane action rogue-like set in a dystopian medievalpunk world. Step into the boots of Clef, a fearless rebel ready to rid the world of the Kingdom’s oppression, take down the Elite and lay siege to the Queen’s grand Bastion. Grab your javelin and become The Reignbreaker!

Reignbreaker on Steam

Reignbreaker plays just like Hades except rather than being in a world of Greek mythology it's in a (sigh) "medievalpunk" world.

Now, I typically hate when people make up new -punk genres just to sound edgy, but this world does actually have a lot of neon graffiti everywhere. So it's more "punk" than most -punk genres in my opinion. I guess it's about as cyberpunk as Nimona on Netflix, which also had a cyberpunk world with a medieval aesthetic for some reason.

I don't think I'd consider this game to be truly cyberpunk, but I'd call it cyberpunk-adjacent. It definitely has a punk edge, and I'm pretty sure it takes place in the future despite its overall medieval aesthetic. So I figured people here might be interested. There's a demo available during Steam's Next Fest and I think it's at least worth trying the demo if you enjoy roguelikes like Hades.

Compared to what you’re normally burning on your PC and/or console, if the deck isn’t your primary gaming device. I know that in my case, ever since getting it I’ve been immersing myself more in indie genres that just never got my attention on PC. I’ve always been pretty basic when it comes to genres, mind you. Mostly FPS and racing games and it was as slow way to discovering the RPGs and more narrative rich stuff that expanded my horizons. The deck really pushed me into being more adventurous when picking what to play next. But I owe the deck for getting me deep into these two in particular

Legendary Boons

Boons enhances Zagreus with powers from various gods.
The highest tier Legendary boons can only appear in a run if Zagreus obtained certain prerequisite boons, which makes them more elusive. All of they provide powerful combat abilities, such as giving extra cast ammo, providing a damage blocking shield, and even granting extra death defiances.

What are you playing this weekend? 2024-08-09

Restarting the weekly "What are you playing" thread!

As you may know, I also mod the Nintendo community, and post these there weekly, so my description will pretty much be a copy / paste of that, but this doesn't mean the thread will get any less love. It's just that there is no point in writing same thing in two different ways, just to make it look different. Though, where applicable, I'll change the game links to PS store instead of Nintendo eshop.

So, without further ado:

Still playing Borderlands 3 as my main PS game. As I mentioned last week: It is really fun, story isn’t anything extraordinary but the gameplay is very enjoyable, so enjoying that. May go for a platinum, but not sure yet, depends if I am feeling same by the time I finish the game.

Still playing Borderlands 3 as my main PS game. Nothing to add there.

Finished Hades! Killed the 3rd region's boss, where I wast stuck, soon after the last weekly post and reached the final boss. Died first time, didn't even reach the boss in next try, but beat the game in try after that.

You need to beat the game multiple times to get the credits roll, and there is post-game content to get final / true ending. There is not much new in the gameplay though, except turning on different difficulty modifiers to make the game more difficult. So, after beating the game a few times, I had enough, and just watched the rest of the narrative online.

As far as I am concerned, I have finished the game.

Cerberus

Despite being faked out as the boss in the Temple of Styx, Cerberus never harms Zagreus during any of his escapes from the underworld. Instead, he rests next to the throne of Hades, allowing Zagreus to pet him. He is rather attached to Zagreus, and threw tantrums which destroyed multiple places within the House of Hades when he found out about Zagreus leaving.

Not much change from last week. Playing:

Horizon Chase Turbo is still in my "currently playing" list but no progress this week.

Hades is my primary switch game right now. It was going pretty good but now I am stuck at boss of region 3. In my last run, I was pretty OP and reached the boss with all my health and lives intact, still couldn't kill it.

This is what I don't like about roguelikes, if you die you have to start all over again, and you don't always get great runs. Hades is pretty good in this regard as no run fe

Finished Dragon Age: Inquisition! Interesting ending. Got me excited for Dragon Age: The Veilguard.

Dropped The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. It was fun, but then it stopped being fun. May visit it again some day, when I am in a correct headspace for the game.

Started Borderlands 3 (on PS5), played just a little bit yet, liked the gunplay and combat, haven't made up my mind on the rest of the game.

Still playing Horizon Chase Turbo, nothing new to add there.

Finished Golf Story. It was a nice little game. I started it thinking it of as an RPG-lite, but it wasn't much of RPG. There were quests and leveling up, but most game have some kind of leveling up the

I play a bunch of indie games, obscure and otherwise, and every 6 months or so I like to do a big recommendation post that coincides with a Steam sale. And let me tell you, this has been a banger 6 months for indie games. Let us begin!

Obscure (<100 reviews)

  • Death Unphased is a delightful little Celeste-like. Tight controls, good level design, and a compelling and unique mechanical gimmick all make for a great platforming experience. The movement feels real good!
  • Magicube is an absolutely brutal block pushing puzzle game. The puzzles a
