Photographer, writer, filmmaker, curator, institution builder, and human rights defender Shahidul Alam was a Time Magazine Person of the Year 2018. The New York Times listed his book “The Tide Will Turn” in ‘Best Art Books of 2020’. John Morris of Life Magazine described his book “My Journey as a Witness” as ‘the most important book ever written by a photographer’. He is a National Geographic Explorer Emeritus. His numerous awards include the Ekushey Padak, Bangladesh’s second-highest civilian award, given for his contributions to education and culture. He is the founder of the agencies Drik Picture Library and Majority World, the media school Pathshala South Asian Media Institute, and the international photography festival Chobi Mela. In 2018, Alam was arrested and tortured following his reporting on the Bangladesh government’s brutal suppression of student protests and was considered a prisoner of conscience by Amnesty International. In 2024, Alam was part of the Bangladeshi delegation to the United Nations General Assembly.
He is widely published and has exhibited worldwide at prestigious venues such as MOMA in New York, Tate Modern in London, the Tehran Museum of Contemporary Arts, the National Art Gallery in Kuala Lumpur, and the Museo Vivo del Muralismo in Mexico City. He has chaired the international jury of World Press Photo. In October 2025, he joined the Freedom Flotilla Coalition and was abducted and jailed by Israel.
