Summer Anime Season Preview Discussion and Thread Requests [Week 26]

Previous Thread | Next Thread

The summer anime season is almost upon us as the spring season is wrapping up. As mentioned last season, there will be a thread like this just before each season starts to allow you to request which shows you want the bot to create threads for. For your convenience:

So, I want to hear what you are planning on watching! Anything look good? like trash? like hot trash?

As always, remember to be mindful of spoilers. If you want to know more about how to handle spoilers in this community, check the guide here (also linked in the sidebar).

    • Tower of God season 2
    • Nier season 2
    • Suicide Squad
    • My Deer Friend Nokotan

I am the most excited for Tower of God season 2 of this list. This is where the story gets really interesting and exciting. Also hyping to see a certain character moment.

Thanks to you telling to check out "My Deer Friend Nokotan" trailer video in a post, I checked it out and now it is now one of my awaiting show.

  • Weekly ranking roundup:

    1. Anime Corner - Full Results - Weekly Winner: Mushoku Tensei
    2. Reddit Karma - Weekly Winner: Mushoku Tensei

Credit to /u/Abysswatcherbel for making the chart for reddit karma and /u/Nooble5 for the Anime Trending chart.

Mushoku Tensei making big gains this week as some dramatic things happen. One of the side effects of running the bot that creates all the episode discussions is that I see all the top level replies in the discussion threads. I need to monitor them to allow users to request screenshots to be the lead image for the thread. However, it means that when something really big happens in a show, it is essentially impossible for me to avoid spoilers. It doesn't really bother me, but it is something that I hadn't really thought about before doing this.

  • Personally, I have a number of series that I am looking forward to this summer season.

    Definitely Watching

    • Oshi no Ko Season 2 - really looking forward to this one
    • Pseudo Harem - One of my favorite manga of all time. This should be a complete adaptation. Don't sleep on this one.
    • My Deer Friend Nokotan - shikanoko nokonoko koshitantan
    • My Wife Has No Emotion - Another great manga.

Will try to give a shot (time permitting)

    • Alya Sometimes Hides Her Feelings in Russian - heard good things about this manga for a while, but just haven't checked it out yet
    • Love Is Indivisible by Twins - just recently started this manga and it is a whole big ball of drama
    • Too Many Losing Heroines! - seems like an interesting premise
    • Dahlia in Bloom - the LN comes recommended by NineSwords, so I have high hopes

Will see what the reception is like before committing

    • Quality Assurance in Another World - could be an interesting take or absolutely average
    • Dungeon People - CGDCT where they are laborers in a dungeon
    • VTuber Legend - will wait to see if the humor is well received here
    • Plus-Sized Elf - this one is coming in an uncensored variety on HIDIVE for all you out there with very specific sensibilities

On a meta note, I continue to make updates on the bot. Most recently I added functionality so that you can see all the shows that the bot is currently tracking:

The development roadmap in the near future is full of things to make my life easier. The big goal with this work right now is to automate updating the wiki pages when episode threads are created.

In case you didn't know, I have been maintaining an index of all the show discussion threads, organized by season. You can find the index page here and the current spring 2024 season page here.

So far, this has been an entirely manual process. Basically, once a day, I would go through all the posts made by the bot and add them to the wiki page. This is a lot of copy/pasting and it is quite difficult to do when I might be traveling, stuck on mobile, or otherwise disconnected. So, the goal with automating this is to enable it to keep up to date if I am otherwise indisposed for a period of time.

I have the basic functionality implemented, but I am still working on some edge cases, ease of use functions, and all the bash scripting around it to make the magic happen. I am hoping to get all that squared away over the next week and have the wiki pages fully automated for the summer season.

  • Meta update:

I was able to automate the wiki updates like I had hoped. I was having a real hard time with the bash scripting needed and making no progress. So, I instead decided to just put it all in a python script. Got it all fixed up in no time after that. If you run into any issues, please let me know.
