A place for chatting, talking about local communities, and overall just vibing in VLemmy. Follow the instance rules when chatting in here.

Is there a way to browse another instance's frontpage while being logged in VLemmy?
I want to browse lemmy.world's "Local" feed (or any other instance's, for that matter) but still be able to comment
Did VLemmy just crash?
Can't access anything there, but other Lemmy sites seem to work.
Defederating from burggit.moe
I'm sure this will come as a disappointment to many of you as you have joined this instance specifically because we do not block or defederate with anybody. Unfortunately my hand is forced on this occasion.
As many of you know this server is hosted in Ireland. It has been brought to my attention that under Irish law:
Virtual child pornography is illegal in Ireland per the Child Trafficking and Pornography Act of 1998 which includes "any visual representation".[Irish Statute Book] The country has strict laws when it comes to child abuse material, even if it doesn't contain any "real children".
As you can understand this requires me to defederate and remove the offending material from my server. There are newer admin tools in the works which will allow me to block specific communities instead of whole servers. Once this is in place I will refederate with burggit and block the individual offending communi
Looking for VLemmy Admins
Hi all. With the recent growth that the server I will be looking for another admin or 2 or 3. Not sure yet.
If you would like you join the admin team PM me with the answers to the questions below.
Is Beehaw defederated from VLemmy?
I know Beehaw were having their issues with lemmy.world and lemmy.ml, but I was wondering if they defederated with all open instances, since my subscriptions have been pending for only that instance from here

Earlier today there was a post about rejecting Meta's intrusion in the fediverse, some don't see the danger in it or think it's unlikely that Meta can do any damage to the fediverse.
Someone posted this in the comments and I think it's extremely relevant and it deserves its own post so all can see it.
Error uploading images?
When I've tried uploading an image to my posts today I keep getting an error. Tried uploading on a different instance and it works fine.
The error on the web reads:
SyntaxError: JSON.parse: unexpected character at line 1 column 1 of the JSON data
On Jerboa it reads:
Value of type java.lang.String cannot be converted to JSONObject
Any idea why this is and how it could be fixed?
Will this instance be joining the fedipact?
I've been hearing that Meta (Facebook) intends to join the fediverse. I have some very big concerns about that, as do apparently many others. There exists a group of instances called the fedipact which will not be federating with Meta, and I was wondering if this instance would be joining. So there is no ambiguity with this post: I have no desire to participate in any instance that is federated with Facebook, and will kindly pass on another Eternal September. Hope that doesn't come off as aggressive, that's just where I'm at.
why cant i create a community?
Do I need to be on a different server?
We are the 16th largest instance on Lemmyverse
We are now the 16th largest instance on Lemmyverse, with 497 weekly active users and 712 monthly active users. Great job everybody, we are doing great. The community that we've cultivated here is really friendly and the server has been running very well. Also, remember that if you're enjoying the Lemmy experience here to donate to our admin @[email protected] using the links on the sidebar, donations are what keep Lemmy sustainable and allow our admins not to have to resort to things like ads to keep the instances running.
Some communities in other instances appear as completely empty (0 posts, 0 subscribers) while they're not
I'm trying to subscribe to communities in other instances but they falsely appear empty. It is not a matter of languages as I see some people suggesting. I have tried choosing English as well as Undetermined without success. Other communities in the same instances appear as they should, without any issues. I have tried from different browsers and even without logging in, fresh browser window, with cleared cache, I open Vlemmy, search for those communities without logging in and I get the same issue. Communities belong to different instances, I can access everything through Lemmy.world although said communities are not in Lemmy.world
Upvotes and downvotes
One of the things that I like about lemmy (as a reddfugee and member for 3 weeks) is that you can see the amount of upvotes vs downvotes a post has, rather than the aggregate score. It makes sense to me to have them separate.
I’m using Memmy and the experience here is calmer and slower paced than reddit, as well as a better overall vibe. It doesn’t work as smoothly as reddit via Apollo, but I don’t feel I have lost anything.
Finding Communities
I’m new to Lemmy and getting to grips with it all. I’ve found a community [email protected] using the aggregator lists in the starting guide. However if I use wefwef app or vlemmy in browser the search isn’t seeing this community so I can’t join. Am I doing something wrong?
Can't change Avatar
Every time I try to change my avatar on vlemmy I get this error:
undefined
SyntaxError: JSON.parse: unexpected character at line 1 column 1 of the JSON data
Is this issue known, is it widespread, and is there a workaround to get the avatar working?
Lurker for more than a year, haven't ever joined Reddit but now have joined Lemmy!
I have been a lurker of Reddit site from the 3rd Party app 'Infinity for Reddit' for more than a year. I always avoided signing up on the site as the main purpose was to consume interactively and not to interact.
Now that the site is killing all 3rd party apps, I'm doing my part by signing up here and increasing the activity on Lemmy to support the cause of federated social media; which to me is the future of the internet. It is free, without any ads/trackers and most importantly it is being expanded by users who want to involve in genuine conversations without the muddiness of paid/promoted contents.
It is my request to other lurkers to join lemmy instances and be the part of the process which defines the future.
can vlemmy control what I can or cannot see?
I'm new to fediverse and lemmy stuff and when I made my account, I didn't know this but I saw a yt video today which showed that the instance I've registered with, can block another instance and I cannot interact with that instance as well. Is that true? That seems like more control over what I see than reddit itself. I don't want to be controlled by someone else's ideologies and opinions. And I hope that's not the case. I'm sorry if I'm misunderstanding something but this is important to me
I get this when looking at some NSFW posts.
Is this a problem at my end? I’m browsing via Memmy on an iPhone 13 Pro Max. New reddfugee, still trying to work some things out.
