Audio Engineering @lemm.ee AstralPath @lemmy.ca Made on Linux: Enslaved - Havenless | Cover by Justin Bourdeau
This is an all instruments/vocals scratch-made cover of the track that got me into Black Metal. A truly iconic masterpiece of atmosphere. I always wanted to do a cover of this track. I'm very happy with how this turned out.
Thanks to Yabridge (https://github.com/robbert-vdh/yabridge) I was able to record, mix, and master this entirely on a Linux system (Nobara) running Reaper with stock Reaper plugins, many FOSS plugins, and a couple choice paid plugins; namely GGD Invasion and Sketch Cassette II. Everything else was free or open source by choice.

Remove scream from track
What are some tools and methods for detecting and removing human voice from audio?
Specific case that I am interested in is this female scream at 0:04 in this video:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q_9NUGFsmfc
It's an old Slovenian TV show. I would like to have it's intro (0:00 - 1:10) for my ringtone.
But the female scream as part of a ringtone is not appropriate for many social situations.
Which is why I am interested in getting it removed.
Problem is that it overlaps with the start of the guitar riff, which I do want to keep in. So just selecting that part of the audio and deleting it is not a good solution.
I have been playing around with some functions in Audacity, but so far nothing resulted in "just remove the scream".
Thank you in advance for your suggestions and advice.
Are there any other communities that would know how to achieve this?
low pass filter cutoff freq and my subwoofers
so i messed up and heres how; i used chatgpt to help design a sallen key low pass filter for my subwoofers. i knowwww i know. mostly i just asked it to do math but the problem is im consistently getting different answers about is if two consecutive second-order filters will change the overall cutoff freq or just make the cutoff steeper. ive used lm4562 opamps, 100nf caps and 8.2 kohm resistors. i did the math my damn self and it looks like chatgpt was right and the cutoff is ~195 hz. my subs are rated to 150 hz at -3db. im inclined to think the stacked filters are going to make a steeper cutoff, rather than change the freq too much but i'd love for someone more knowledgeable to chime in here.
it wasn't wasted work, it was my first electronics project so i got to lay out a real pcb board and solder it all together which went pretty well. i have a fischer price freq generator from the local college so i'll see if it actually works before grumbling too much at myself.

Very interesting experiment to visualize what we already knew by Dave Rat!
Sound Technical Rider Patch List
Hello! Is it good practice in a technical rider patch list to group the violins for example under one line when there are a good number of them for better readability or should I give each one a line. For example the format would be: Input: 1-12 | Instrument: Violin 1 | Number: 12 | Microphone: ...
Also is there a particular order of instruments that should be followed?
Thanks!
Recording an orchestra and choir
Hello!
I'm in a situation where I'm coordinating the recording of an orchestra and choir concert with a sound engineer with which we have not had the best experience in the past. So I'm trying to find the best way to record the concert so we can tell him how to place the mics (He's open to discussion and agreeing with that).
The concert is happening in a church with a full orchestra and a choir of about 80 people.
- Of course, the goal will be to rely mainly on a main stereo pair. I was thinking about a ORTF pair a few meters about the conductor's head. Would a Decca tree be better if we have the possibility?
- I read that the 3:1 rule to mic the choir is pretty standard but my concern is that the microphones would pick up a lot of brass which are really close to the choir. I don't think I should get the mics too close to choir to have an homogeneous sound. What would be a good distance from the choir and will increasing the height of the microphones be enough to minimize brass in t
What are you guys working as?
Hello there,
what the title says. Are you working as music producers, audio engineers, are you working as a freelancer for music production or for a company?
Cheers!
Any fans of Acustica plugins here?
I just recently picked up a couple of them, but their product range is a little confusing to me. Curious if anyone is using and digging any of their plugins? Or any alternatives that you like?
Gregory Scott on gathering feedback
These advices on sharing listening experiences is very helpful, I found myself doing more or less the same things with some non-engineers friends that have a highly emotional response to music. I might have benefited several times from leaving them more space to connect with feelings. And less talking :)
What’s your go-to vocal microphone?
Curious what everyone is using on vocals? I’ve got a 47 clone that I love, but it’s also hard to beat an SM7 sometimes. It’s a classic for a reason!
Who’s your favorite mixer right now?
Who inspires you the most as a mixer these days and why? I really look up to Serban Ghenea. His mixes are always so consistently great, balanced, loud, without being harsh. And it seems like he’s all ITB using standard tools that everyone has access too, he’s just got the skills and ear to make them great.
Let’s talk about oversampling
When I first started noticing oversampling options in my plugins, I turned them up as high as my cpu allowed by default. “It must sound better, right?” But lately, I’ve started noticing that oversampling in most of my plugins kills the transients and punchiness in a way that make it not worth using. Am I crazy or has anyone else experienced this? What situations do you find oversampling useful?
Any new plugins you’re excited about?
I’ve been loving the Kilohearts Essentials collection lately. Totally free and everything sounds great to me! Covers a lot of ground that stock plugins might not cover.
What DAW is everyone here using and why?
I’m currently using Pro Tools but started in Logic. For my needs and workflow, Pro Tools just has everything I need and I’m used to it. Curious what everyone on here is using?
