  • It’s haunting that there’s a taboo to discussing things that inconvenience the rich and powerful. We even gave a cute little name to make it sound less terrible than it actually is, “political.”

  • This seems irresponsible.

There was an old game from the PlayStation days called Xenogears. There was a population of mutants and monsters in it than came about from fucking with DNA irresponsibly. I’m reminded of that obnoxious rat-man from the Kislev prison.

  • Reticulum is gaining momentum. I’m planning on investigating how viable a shift off cellular would actually be for my uses and it actually looks pretty doable.

  • You know the saddest part of this? ICE paid for that. If I made something that blocked that tool from working or even just made a knockoff that does the same thing, they would just seize it.

So that company has more rights and protections than actual humans do.

    And that’s considered okay.

  • It doesn’t have to be one or the other exclusively. They could be accessible on both sides, giving an easy mode with clearnet and VPN for those who are comfortable with the gas chambers and mass graves, and the I2P mode accessing the same content but passing the traffic around differently for literally everyone else.

  • A VPN doesn’t solve the problem. I would be paying for a stall at best, and one that has no way of knowing for sure they don’t keep logs or aren’t compromised. Look at what happened with Ovano back when Facebook bought them then lied about it.

  • Exactly. While I appreciate that a stock corporate “we’re looking into it and will complete our investigation right after you forget about it” would likely not go over well here, the response they issued basically made the concerns seem like a low priority.

Giving money to right wingers is no longer an issue of differing opinions. It’s literally arming the people that want people like me dead. I can’t dismiss that to keep the peace. I can’t just sit here and say “fine, I will allow myself and my entire community to be snuffed out quietly because it’s more convenient for you.”

The poster’s concerns were clear and vivid. Easily understood. And immediately dismissed.

It’s unbearably frustrating that so many in the world are think the complaints of those being oppressed aren’t important. I keep getting the response of “who cares, you’ll be dead soon anyway and then this argument won’t matter”

  • They actually did try the years ago. The idea was a signal could be sent to deactivate cameras and microphones on all phones in a vicinity. It was being pitched as a way to stop people from recording a live events like concerts but there was enormous outcry over the potential for abuse so it was dropped.

  • It’s too late. Even without the influence of tech assholes, the western world has gone full fascist and it’s just not coming back to anything safe without a fuckton of Luigi’s.

  • Why can’t this be a web app that uses web notifications? Why does it even need to be an on-device app? That’s building in a vulnerability that doesn’t need to be there.

Make it a site. Go to the site. Pin the site. Allow notifications from site. Done.

Yes, Apple and Google are in the wrong, but why are we relying on them for this at all? Not everything needs to be a fucking app.

  • I was looking at a pixel fold running grapheneOS. Google is making changes that I dislike and realistically cannot avoid so why jump ship from my existing walled garden into one that’s just now starting to from, with even worse privacy and a business model totally dependent on violating as much of your privacy as possible?

The future of graphene and other third party roms is uncertain but I needed to upgrade my phone. My screen was cracked but usable but once I remove it to replace the battery I won’t be able to reinstall the single piece of glass and by that point I’m halfway to a new phone anyway.

For now, I’m okay with my air, but I know me and Apple are on not going to be together long term. I’m pulling off the cloud and breaking up dependancies one by one so, but as far as phones go, there isn’t a viable option quite yet. It’s definitely coming but it’s not here yet.

We need to break free from both Apple AND Google. Borrowing from Google to make another rom but still being dependent on them to keep your project alive and supported is no longer an option. We need a clean break away from them.

I can foresee a phone-like pocket computer running Linux that doesn’t have cellular capabilities at all. American cell phone companies weren’t crazy about supporting windows phone a many even blocked them from joining their networks. We are starting to see the same shit with Linux phones now. But most people don’t need data everywhere. There’s wifi where people like me actually use it. And so I can see a market for a voip service for phones that lets you use them like mobile landlines. For simple texts, a network of Lora packet radios would suffice and reticulum seems to be up the task of serving that need.

Costs are increasing and our dependance on these devices are changing so not every problem we have with Linux phones will need to be solved by the time that such devices get off the ground. We have options for tomorrow.

But today, the iPhone air was fine for me.

  • So you request something torrent something for you?

  • You better eat that entire iPhone. There are starving children building them in china!

  • This! Teensy has been better for years now. Plus we have ESP as big players on these scene now too. Let them kill arduino. We will adapt.

  • So they want to sell AI shit buy buying the company that teaches children how to blink an LED. Well, this is bad news for both sides.

  • Remind me what this does?

  • I was about to switch to android but ended up with another iPhone because of Google killing the only reasons to use android.

I like my air but I’m still waiting for what I really want. A viable Linux phone.

  • I’ve actually switched to Ocenaudio for what little I do and have been happy.

  • Set one up as a cache of things you like. Have it fetch things with punch flat and filter out the ads. Then you can watch whatever you want even after Google takes it down for no reason.
