Long term computer programmer, making my own library. American based. Far left politically. Promotes use of paper ballots. Follows news about environmental collapse, political corruption in my country, human rights, science and tech.

  • But what do you think the popular science fiction will be like in the west should there be a better life? If the world was not falling apart and there was hope?

I think the current trends now would continue but have new elements. More fantasy and magic than science. I simply do not see hard science fiction ( that I like) bring as popular as before, even if everyone had a living wage, food to eat and a contentment.

  • I think technology will continue to increase.

When I was a child most people could intuit most machines; or at least halfway guess how they worked.

I could see this in the golden age of science fiction. The technology, if and when when explained, made sense.

But now most people cannot understand technology, it requires the expertise of too many to design and create. I think in part that is why there is a trend towards magic. Future tech is more wizardly.

So, I think if sci-fi makes a comeback, it will be more a mix of fantasy and space

  • What kind of new science fiction do you think would happen should it become popular in the west again?

  • The sabotage creates more of a vacuum in traditional media that suppressed social reform.

Since the entire news sharing is rapidly evolving, it’s hard to say if it makes any difference now.

  • I look to the changed practices in child rearing first, and then see how what happens now alters the outlook of what was learned in early years.

My point is, should there be sudden renewed hope in technology and advancement again, or if there is still hope, or better jobs, there will not be a resurgence of science fiction in the west.

Instead there will be new literature trends

  • I grew up believing in the power of technological advancement. This is what I was taught. Consequently science fiction made sense to me.

My kids, when young, were not given the same treatment and schooling I was. I did not read stories of moon exploration to them, instead I read about other things.

I noticed after they grew up, that they remained interested in the stuff they were shown to them when small

  • I can code my stuff ok on an older model. I’m sure there are some stacks that need more resources, but I’m having a hard time thinking of which.

Admittedly, on a laptop that is 20+ years old, I cannot surf the web AND run docker at the same time

  • I think it’s a slow change of different beliefs. The enjoyment of fiction evolves much like religion does. Every 30 or 60 years new trends show up, and the older trends shrink.

And while there could be a massive loss of hope in all ages, it might be unrelated to a decline of science fiction

  • That is boootiful

  • Honestly feel like the end of syndicated book reviews is not that bad. I have often thought that there is a selection process about the type of reviewer who gets the big press, and usually I am diametrically opposed to them in so many ways.

I was always an outsider to that sort of institutional and emotionally stunted world

  • Unretiring is a new word I learned; it’s cute and distopian. It sounds nice until one thinks about it, and the word has hints of bitter darkness and grinding poverty.

  • Pasteurizing milk started as a convenience for customers; but many now days have forgotten what always happened to milk before it was drunk

People used to home pasteurize all the time; find any recipe in an older cookbook (1970s and before) and the first thing you do is scald the milk. Nobody drank unscalded milk.

The raw milk proponents, who believe it, forgot their own family history.

  • It cannot change as a nation. Any movement for federal reform is a lost cause. Certain states and municipalities could change, and that is where the future is for some citizens.

  • Win-Win

  • Owls do like that, I think, but live mice better.

  • I feel like there are not any good and effective leaders or movements. At least not nationally

  • Just get a few million dollars from your relatives??

  • Many states have elections that do not allow recounts, using hidden methods to count, and flunk the same fraud checks used pretty in other counties reliably.

Given that, I’m not too worried

  • All he had to do was write a letter and say a few words. Easiest and least stressful way to get three hots and a cot.
