When reading "packaging" in the news articles it sounds like some relatively simple logistics operating.
But for electronics and semi-conductors, the "packaging" is very much part of the manufacturing process to get a usable product. Like chips that come in Surface Mount and Through Hole versions
Yeah I agree there is good competition in that market these days, even if the transition work is costly. I'm sure a lot of companies are doing the math of paying the Broadcom VMWare tax Vs transitioning all their infrastructure
But Broadcom does do software now, they bought VMWare in 2023, and implemented aggressive license changes. From the article:
Broadcom's acquisition of VMware and the subsequent price hikes haven't gone down well with all customers, to the point that many have been considering alternatives. Thierry Carrez, general manager of the foundation behind one such alternative, OpenStack, told The Register: "Broadcom's handling of VMware is a good example of the risk of trusting your infrastructure software fate to a single vendor. Those companies can be bought, can change direction, can change licensing terms anytime they want."
"Broadcom continues to tighten the screws on Europe's cloud infrastructure sector," said CISPE.
On the other hand, seeing this symbol more and more on other random videos outside that bubble does give a very nice sense of "I am not alone". It does more for users to find eachother than it does damage to big corpos.
But choice of the symbol itself is questionable.. Why use a big tech symbol to protest big tech? -__-
And not just any big tech, but super evil 90s monopolistic giant Microsoft
There's a nice cartoon in this thread we're clippy is if he could have, he would have harvest all your data.
Your mileage may vary... I've used mine for 5ish years, no problems with the wire apart from seasonal stripping and re-terminating the ends due to corrosion. My neighbour have up on his wire based one after a few seasons because the wire somehow broke over every winter.
In addition to GPS based one, I believe there are also some camera based ones these days.
Learning KiCAD is worthwhile, it's sorta becoming the Blender of PCB design. Fully open source, gaining more and more traction and getting more and more development.
For fabrication check out https://oshpark.com/ who make PCBs at hobbyist volumes. Like 3 per order. Lead free.
PCBWay / JLCPCB also looks like a decent service for fabrication, but last time I looked all their cheapest offers were not lead free. And their lead free option cost around the same as oshpark.
Wow that makes so much sense!
